Mueller: "If we had confidence the President did not commit a crime, we would have said so"

Mueller reiterated the finding in his report, saying if his office "had confidence that the President clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so."
Mueller then explained, citing Department of Justice policy, that a President "cannot be charged with a federal crime while he is in office. That is unconstitutional."
"Even if the charge is kept under seal and hidden from public view, that, too, is prohibited," Mueller said. The special counsel's office is part of the Department of Justice, he said, and is therefore bound by its policies.
"Charging the President with a crime was therefore not an option we could consider," he said.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller said intelligence officers with the Russian military "launched a concerted attack on our political system" in an attempt to "interfere with our election and to damage a presidential candidate."

2 отв.I like how for the past 2 and a half years Congress has spent all of their time trying to find a way to impeach Trump which has resulted in them pretty much ignoring major issues going on in our country ranging from immigration, mental illness, our somewhat prominent drug crisis, etc. But no, let’s keep going deeper and deeper to try to find a way to get rid of our president instead of actually looking at the major issues that’s going on in our country right now

That aside- I think Mueller did a fine job as Special Counsel. Now it is up to Congress to impeach, even if the Republican Senate has already decided that they wouldn't convict.

5 отв.While I think he made it very clear that the only reason he didn't charge the president is because he can't I think we should focus more on his final statement. Russians systematically interfered with our elections and that's something we should all know. As far as Congress moving forward with impeachment I think that is a waste of time and unnecessary. I do think Trump obstructed justice but I don't think he truly intended to. He didn't personally commit criminal conspiracy and that is great to know. [b][i]But[/i][/b] he did benefit from a foreign governments attempts to put him in power and I think that foreign influence needs to be mitigated in whatever way we can. I really don't know how we could, but it doesn't seem like the current administration is making an attempt either way. Our elections need to be clear and fair. I've gotten over the Trump hysteria, if he wins in 2020 so be it. But the process only matters if we can agree that it our decisions as Americans to make.

This is nothing new. All of this was in the report. It has already been covered by the media when the report was originally released. The only difference now is that Mueller is saying it in person rather than just in the report. Unfortunately Republicans and the right wing media will [i]continue[/i] to ignore what Mueller and the report [i]actually[/i] says and claim “total exoneration”. Why? Because it works. Most people won’t bother reading the report and will simply trust what Trump and their preferred partisan media source tells them.
