i respectfully disagree. if you want a game to succeed you must cater to the people who actually play the game every day and dont leave. casual players come and go with no loyalty to any game. they tend to play the hot game for a while and then move on. they are going to buy the game when it first comes out regardless because its the new shiny toy. if you cater too much toward casuals you will lose your hardcore and when new game comes out you also lose the casuals. guess what youre left with? a dead game.

That’s entirely wrong. Plenty of games maintain huge player bases for very long periods of time. Destiny could be one of those games if they ignored the “hardcore” types. It’s just bad business. Cater to the minority of players and you’ll only be able to keep a minority around. Cater to the majority and make sure they always have fun and guess what? They stay around. Especially in a long term game like Destiny. They will stick around much longer than an average game. When they’re sticking around more money is coming in and more will buy new content drops resulting in more content drops for us to buy and play. Catering to the “hardcore” or “pure casual” is just bad. Cater to the average gamer that makes up the majority of the gaming community. Or they can just keep the small base and small revenue they have instead of growing that base and revenue. Their call.

and when new game comes out that is also fun and the "majority" leave to go play it, what does bungie do with a upset "hardcore" fan base?

If their game was good enough and had enough players, said players would take a brief break to play other games and come back. Currently they just leave. Even if another game doesn’t come out.
