Why Is There Level Advantage In PvP?

I've never understood this. I've been playing Destiny since D1. And ever since Trials was released, I've always wondered the same thing--Why is there level advantage in PvP? Ideally, PvP would be purely a matchup of a players skill. This game having a random roll loot system, so I suppose that can never truly be possible in public matches (But can be in gentleman agreement private matches). But let's ignore that for this post. Can we agree that Trials of Osiris, since it's launch, has generally been viewed as PvP endgame? That being, the PvP game mode where "skill" (Map and ability awareness, accuracy, reaction time, movement, foresight, decision making, etc.) is put at the forefront. With that being said, since D1 there has never been a consistent PvP method of reaching the max light level. In fact, by week 2 of any season, most campaign only players are at least 3+ light level above crucible only players. I only play PvP, and generally I end every season 4 levels below max light because there was only 1 way of getting Crucible pinnacle engrams (recently 2, with the addition of Competitive). So it has never made sense to me why the quickest way to reach PvP endgame is by playing campaign. If it is a method of giving Campaign only players a chance in PvP activities, I guess that makes sense. But if it's supposed to be a way of enticing Crucible only players to play Campaign, I can tell you I have never been tempted to play Campaign. The missions are long and repetitive and enemies are all the same. Can anyone explain to me why this advantage exists?

It's a good way to keep new lights out of activities they shouldn't be in. If I'm playing freelance Trials, I don't want some 1550 blueberry using a blue AR they just picked up to weigh my team down. Sure, they make good bait, but they're probably not having fun getting farmed and I'm not having fun losing because of them.

  • Because it's an endgame activity. Also the consistent pvp method for reaching max light has always been crucible weeklies, comp rank-ups, and IB and you can start sprinkling in trials as you go since it can also give you light-relevant gear. All are consistent in that they are predictably available. Obviously you'll progress much slower than if you played other portions of the game as well, but you 100% can reach max power via crucible if you're willing to put in the work. The advantage exists for two reasons: 1. To make power gridning meaningful for pvp players. Otherwise there would be absolutely no point for us. 2. To stop people from using sunset weapons like NF or Revoker in endgame pvp modes.

    • If there was no Light level advantage I would use last Hope and Mountain top and beam everyone non stop

    • You've been playing since d1 as a "vet" why are you questioning this? You should understand by now, or at least have an idea.

        • Destiny is about power. Not skill.

I thought level advantage was only active in Trials? PVP main anywhere?
