WALL OF TEXT ALERT 😁
Ideas for the next Darkness subclasses is easyyyy! I think we will be getting Soulfire and Taken for our next two subclasses. I think we’d get Soulfire in Lightfall and Taken in The Final Shape. We already have damage types in the liner slot through exotics, and the current track of Darkness seems to be based on how Darkness is described in Gnostic belief which is drawn upon A LOT for ideas in destiny.
In that case, Darkness would be Matter, or material energy. Something physical. Light on the other hand is Immaterial energy, something only able to be channeled through a “lense,” being the ghost. The Darkness comes from within though, and the actual elements we have seem to be based on the Three major Alchemickal elements. Salt (Body), Sulfure (Soul), and Mercury (Spirit) as well as the three states of matter being Solid, Gas, and Liquid.
—————————————————————————————
I’d like to start off by saying that these elements seem to be anything but painful for those on the wrong end of their effects lol.
Stasis would equate to Salt (Body) and Solid state here. Salt represents purity in a way and Stasis is pure in itself. Stasis is also in opposition if Solar, as solar disintegrates and Stasis does the exact opposite by solidifying things. There is actually lore stating how being encapsulated by Stasis feels. It feels like nothing. Not cold, not painful, it just feels like nothing. It has a very physical and tangible presence (like salt) given that it works entirely off of Solid energy in different forms. Whether making an actual crystalline structure, encasing enemies in the solid energy by “freezing,” or simply making the area muuuuch more dense through the slowing Stasis fields, the connection is clear. It also makes sense that we got this first and the Body is the vessel that carries the Soul and the Spirit. Gotta have a… Solid foundation… lmao
Soulfire would be paired with Sulfur (Soul) and Gas. I mean, it’s in the name. Sulfur gas is also very bad for people lol. We know some of the stuff Soulfire is capable of from the lore and our own Arsenal. We’d likely have a poisonous (corrupting) vapor DoT element on our hands, but it also affect the thoughts of others and is also capable of things like Necromancy. In the Necrotic Grip’s lore, as the corruption spreads through someone who was contaminated by a discharge of Thorn (I think), they slowly became happier and happier saying things like “I am reborn” until he eventually died. It is noted that he didn’t seem to be in pain at all, just happy. So perhaps a charm element, friendly fire enabled?? 😂 Nokris uses it to fuel his necromancy and we all know those hive portals. I believe it is in opposition to the Void, so it would be nice to see a Soulfire portal blink lmao. I’m not entirely sure the reason it would oppose Void, but if I wanna get a bit creative, I could say it’s because the Void collapses things inward (even look at Ruinous Effigy), and Soulfire Vapor would corrupt and then expand them (pop into clouds of Soulfire, and spread just like the Necrotic grip). There is also the finisher available in Eververse which consists of Eris’s orb of Soulfire with the Ahamkra bone, and it is a void only finisher. Bungie is known to tease future content through Eververse too.
Last is Taken, which would representative of Mercury (Spirit) and Liquid. Taken energy has often been described as Liquid or goo, and even was infecting the water supply in the EDZ. It would also be the opposite of Arc. Arc seems to be the embodiment of freedom and wildness, while Taken is the embodiment of Order and well, not freedom lmao. Even look at Witherhoard, it creates pools. Taken energy is also often seen as puddles or spheres that churn. We were supposed to Ascend the Taken Throne once we toppled Oryx, but we didn’t. Now it makes sense, since we found out that Oryx wasn’t even the owner of the Taken power. Even the Worm God he slayed and took it from wasn’t there owner or origin of it. Oryx basically just borrowed it. We know taking is capable of completely altering the structure of a living being and making their will fluid, bendable only by the Taker until the taken themself is dead. Then they remain Taken and completely altered, no lo-blam!- what they were before. This would make sense for The Final Shape, given that with Taken energy, you are altering the “Shape” of another.
—————————————————————————————
Again all three of these, including the two ones we don’t yet have, are already damage types available in game through the kinetic slot, where all Darkness based weapons are (can’t be energy if the element is material). We see these powers used or sought after by our allies. And I already know the teachers we’d have.
We had the Exo Stra-blam!- teach us to wield Stasis since she already had experience, and well as Clovis’s research on the element. Eris is proficient in Hive Arcana and regularly uses Soulfire for many things, one of which is teleporting us places we need to be. And last, the Drifter has been trying to figure out how to harness Taken energy for a fat minute, but still can’t control them through motes. And who was the Stra-blam!- with all through the Beyond Light campaign? Eris and Drifter, The Dark Vanguard baby. All we need is for The Darkness to help them so they can in turn help us, as we are what it truly seeks to empower. 😉
EDIT: Spelling
EDIT 2: I wanted to add a couple more lil pieces of evidence. Think about the orbs that we dunk for various effects. We dunk Void orbs in Soulfire wells to cancel Soulfire barriers. We dunk Arc orbs to Cancel out taken barriers. They cancel eachother out, just like how Stasis and Solar directly compete (Immunity to Stasis while in a Well of Radiance and those Solar Titan legs). ALSO, the current supers we have seem to be sort of “Dark Reflections” of supers available in the Solar trees. Silence and Squall is a whole lot like Blade Barrage. Glacial Quake a melee attack and ground pound that sends a wave of the elemental effect just like Burning Maul, and Winter’s Wrsth is a whole lot like Daybreak in that you get an actual weapon as a catalyst for casting and using the super (sword and staff). We’d likely seem more of These Dark Reflections in future supers, but I may be reaching lol.
Void and stasis. Before stasis it was solely void because it was the closest thing to darkness and then stasis came I just feel in love with the power it brings even now. Tether and silence and squall are my favorites I like cc. If I control my opponent then I control the flow of battle and ultimately control the outcome and thats true power in its purest form.
Arc - Warlock
Void - Hunter
Solar - Titan
Stasis - Despise it with a passion, the most annoying supers ever, all those fracking columns of ice getting in the way, blocking site lines...hate it.
This is all PvE, PvP can suck it...suucccckkkk iiiittttttttt - Psych.
Arcstrider, because flashiest super with 30 second cooldown
Nightstalker omniocolus with infinite invis
Voidwalker because bottom tree is a sword users wet dream
D1 Voidwalker hands down. Never got tired of it. Voidwalker these days feels lacking but hoping Void 3.0 addresses that. Judging by the flashy new melee, it looks promising! Hopefully it doesn’t get the Penumbral Blast treatment and get nerfed into oblivion less than two weeks in because of PvP lmao. I do love the aesthetic of Stasis, but the Shadebinder is complete sagging booty and the other two Stasis subclasses ain’t that great either.
Suuuper excited to have all of those other grenades as a Warlock though, and if they keep Chaos Accelerant, just imagine what the other six grenades will be capable of! Man and I hope they rework Nova Bomb and make it completely fresh like they are doing with tether! 😱
