Remember when the Division was said to be the "Destiny Killer"? Well guess what:
It didn't kill Destiny.
insert "destiny killed destiny" here
This is because of competition.
Any economist would tell you that competition between products and businesses is extremely good for both competing companies, in this case Ubisoft/Massive and Activision/Bungie.
The Division was being marketed before and around the time that The Taken King was being developed and launched. YouTubers did their thing and jumped on the "Division is the Destiny Killer" bandwagon, which generated competition once it was out there for Bungie and all to see.
This made both the Division and Destiny better because you have two fanbases going at each other saying one is better than the other.
But Destiny 2 didn't have that motivation. The Division faded after a few months after launch, which killed off the "Destiny Killer" vision. Sure, the Division has come back, but it wasn't really marketed at all and was sort of a sleeper game.
D2 didn't have any competition in its development. There weren't any new Destiny-like games like the Division coming out. You could say that Cod WW2 and Battlefront 2 helped with competition, and that may be true, but it's hard to see that impact if they're all different genres of games. Cod WW2 definitely helped Battlefront 2 have some competition, but nothing for D2.
We need another Destiny Killer, as strange as it sounds. But I'm telling you, no game has ever killed off another game, unless you count Battleborn. Overwatch destroyed that game.
