Thoughts on Weapon Balance

I spoke with the Sandbox team that balances the weapons in the game. This is part of a running dialogue between us where I make sure they receive your feedback. They wanted to give you some information about their process. [quote]Hey everybody! We appreciate all of you who return to Destiny over and over again, and we respect the things you have to say about what you are seeing and feeling as you play it. As we wage wars in our playtest labs, we’re taking a lot of things into account: player data, your feedback, and our own gameplay experiences. We’ve heard the conversation about, and felt for ourselves, shotgun dominance (Yes, we see you Matador 64), but we feel strongly that our goal shouldn’t be to nerf them into the ground. Instead, we’re looking at solutions that could bring shotguns into a better state of balance with the rest of the guns in the game. In doing this, we would still want Shotguns to be effective and fun to wield. We could quickly and easily break shotguns and call it a day, but it’s important to us that we explore positive changes that can make Destiny better for everyone. We all wish you the happiest holidays and look forward to you kicking our asses in SRL.[/quote] The right time and place for a deployment of Sandbox changes is something we’ll investigate further in the new year. In the meantime, our playtest labs are home to a process we’re using to explore the current state of combat in Destiny.

  • One widely ignored fact is fusions should discharge all their bolts if killed while firing. Its ridiculous and frustrating when 2 bolts come out of a fusion as the guardian gets shotgunned.

      • Just had a ddos at a 8-0 card with mercy twice in a row. Have all their names down and clips showing this. Still its bungie here doubt anything will be done about this.

        • I would like to see something specific. If you're sprinting directly at someone and you get popped in the head, you should stop sprinting, allowing shotguns to be even less dominant.

          • My only suggestion is to find a way to bring back gun battles, destiny and it's ttk is getting more and more like cod every year. When the ttk on certain weapons is less than half a second you run into problems. There's always going to be a meta so maybe there should be a weapon balancing patch every month or every other month to make the metas more diverse. In order to get better feedback from crucible, and the main weapons being used at the time, don't look at the crucible as a whole with every kd range available. Instead focus on people around a 1 kd and up, people who can consistently put bullets on their targets. Of course people who have a .2 overall kd are going to use auto rifles because it requires less skill and is more lenient if you do miss shots. I'm not trying to bash on low kd people, and I'm not trying to say that I'm really good at pvp, but lately I've only seen an auto rifle being used on very rare occasions in crucible. Keep up the good work and keep the community involved in perfecting destiny.

            What type of ninja buff did you guys give Eyasluna? That gun does not have the impact to two shot anyone even with litc and yet it is - and regularly, like once a match! It has the exact same base stats as Hawkmoon. Hawkmoon only ever two shots anyone when litc hits consecutively and both shots are landed with at least one headshot. This reply probably won't get much attention but I think it's bullshit that you guys change shit on this game without telling anyone. With that being said, the problem with shotguns is your idiotic range system. A shotgun should always be a two shot minimum kill outside of melee range. Unfortunately, this game allows players to close distance too quickly and most weapons can't counter them regularly. Not to mention that shotgun range is stupid right now. Also, shotgunning while sprinting may be possible in real life but in this game it's a cheap trick and I thought that was removed a long time ago.

              Here are the changes I would make. [b][i][u]Primary Weapons[/u][/i][/b] [u]Auto rifles[/u] I believe that lowest impact (Doctrine of Passing, Necrochasm) and the medium rate of fire (Monte Carlo, Red Spectre) are fine were they are at. The highest impact (Does not Bow, Shadow Price class) auto rifles need a small bump in base range. The problem is that the medium rate of fire auto rifles perform better at the range in which these are supposed to effective in. [u]Hand cannons[/u] The big problem hand cannons at present is bloom. The bloom on hand cannons needs to be reduced. We should not have to max out the range stat to just lessen the effect of an invisible accuracy debuff. However damage drop off will have to be closely looked at to prevent the mistakes of year 1. [u]Pulse rifles[/u] The highest impact class (Lyudmila-D, Spare Change.25) need a slight stability buff. I would give a 1% or 1.5% buff to stability. The reason for the low buff is that this class can 2 burst kill and being able to reliable do that would be disastrous. The mid impact class (No Time to Explain, Nirwen’s Mercy) need a minor base damage increase. I would recommend an increase of about 2%-3%. The big problem with this class is that they are completely outperformed by the low and lowest impact class pulse rifles. Their time to kill needs to be raised to be more viable. The low impact class (Outbreak Prime, SUROS PDX-45) and the lowest impact class (Grasp of Malok, The Clever Dragon) have similar problems. At present they are too effective at farther ranges. This is more important on the lowest impact class however if nothing is done to the low impact class then they will be to strong even if the damage increase to the mid impact class is applied. In short damage fall off needs to be adjusted. [u]Scout rifles[/u] No changes necessary. [b][i][u]Special Weapons[/u][/i][/b] [u]Fusion rifles[/u] No changes necessary. [u]Shotguns[/u] Shotguns need a lot of work done. My suggestions may seem a bit extreme but I think overall they will make sense. The 67 and 64 impact shotguns (Matador 64 and the Party Crasher +1) should not be able to roll with range finder, rifled barrel or reinforced barrel. The 61 impact class (44 Curtain call) can have one of the previous perks. So a weapon can have range finder but cannot have rifled or reinforced barrel. Or it can have reinforced barrel and rifled barrel but not range finder. The problem is not with shotguns as a whole only with these architypes with these perks do they become too strong. With the movement speed in destiny I believe this will put these weapons in the high risk high reward spot that they are intended to be in. [u]Sidearms[/u] No changes necessary. [u] Sniper rifles[/u] No changes necessary. [u][i][b]Heavy Weapons[/b][/i][/u] [u]Rocket Launchers[/u] Grenades and Horseshoes perk should be examined to see if working properly. There have been way to many times in both PVP and PVE where rockets were a hairs with from the target and they do not detonate. [u]Machine Guns[/u] No changes necessary. [u]Swords[/u] No changes necessary.

                • @Cozmo please keep in mind how poorly other special weapons are fairing in the crucible compared to shotguns in the current meta. if there is a primary buff in the works, and no changes to special weapons it will do nothing to solve the issue of shotgun dominance over fusions, sidearms and snipers. I'm sure the community would like to see other special weapons get some real attention/love. thank you.

                  • Well at this time my thought would be to make the crucible unbalanced a but buff sniper scopes, grenades and fusions. Make everything viable and equally good at certain situations. At this point adding "OP" ness would make the crucible more fun. Destiny 2 is what u guys r working on so just buff it back bring bak the original fun. Autos-the archetype of shadow price and all need some buffing to damage so that they kill in 2-3 shots less. Hand canons-No buffs needed they are used all over the place very viable even with bloom. Pulses- pluses like red death suffer against our clever dragons and hawksaws, an appropriate buff might be to amp up the damage so they can 2 burst mid armour guardians but not high ones. Fusions- all in all fusions are in a good state if you know how to use then although a stability or range buff could be used Snipers-no change needed seem balanced Shotguns- A controversial topic but as of now they are good we dealt with felwinter lies and we can deal with these as many players have their fun with these. Instead we could buff the primaries a bit to combat these shotties. Classes- *Sunsinger could use the buff to its grenade maybe do what you did with thorn decrease the burn damage but make it tick more to you can actually get a kill *bladedancers arcbolt could use a buff Matchmaking- *sbmm needs to be toned down a bit more than you guys already have Final say- I would say we don't need nerfs if something is strong making other weapons stronger for counter play. Destinty 2 is coming soon hopefully so making buffs might make it more fun and we may be able to survive with a much more fun pvp experience till then. I love this game and seeing you guys listen to the community makes us much happier. Hopefully you guys will listen and make the appropriate buffs needed.

                    • Remove HcR from primary,buff primary guns a bit(AR etc..) Nerf shotguns like matador etc.. Remove bloom from HC There you go.

                        So many terrible perks on guns which makes it so hard to get a gun that's worth keeping...99 % of guns that drop I delete. Exotics aren't as good as legendary weapons so almost all my exotics just sit in my vault... Solution....rework or get rid of dumb underwhelming perks...duh Greatest idea ever = Kvostov exotic Worst idea ever = Making Kvostov so underpowered it's insane Solution...buff it...duh Why did u nerf the hawkmoon range so hard? Solution...buff back range before u nerfed it...duh (think u nerfed it 10 or 20 base range). Why do fast ROF low impact handcannons carry less ammo in mag and have less base range? They hit for less and have little ammo in mag lol. Solution....increase mag size, increase stability by a lot, and handcannons w low range shouldn't have such harsh damage fall off. Why do fast ROF low impact shotguns carry same ammo in mag and have same range as high impact shotguns. They need to have some sort of incentive to use over high impact shotguns. Solution....Increase mag size, total ammo u can carry, and increase handling/equip times. Autos are butt...pulses can outgun them in auto range. Shotguns can close distance n kill in auto range...duh Solution....Buff autos base damage and not by .04 %....duh Pretty much make them kill one bullet quicker atleast... So much more needs fixing but u get the point...it's sooooooo easy to see what needs fixing...so atleast try and fix it...duh Do u guys at bungie even care about balance? Cause it seems like whoever is in charge of balance is stubborn as hell or u guys already got ur $ and are focusing 100 % on destiny 2... I might sound a bit harsh but U guys really need to step it up... Insanely cool game but balance is worst I have ever saw in my life in any shooter.

                        • The fact that handcannons have accuracy cone or RNG cone or ghost bullets Is beyond me...if you're worried about range then nerf the range don't give it some slot machine bull to mitigate it's utility

                        • First thought. Fire whoever is responsible for the current state of PVP. This game has been so watered down with nerfs that kids just mindlessly run around and shottie ape most of the game. What happened to who has the better stafe, accuracy, and positioning? It's hard to believe this is the same company that created Halo.

                            • Here's a suggestion: make all the "content" in this game relevant. Move the 'ol difficulty slider for VoG/CE/PoE, add ALL the pvp maps and game types to the rotations and private matches, make trials lighthouse loot once a week like everything else in this game.
