How do people shotgun so well?

This is a serious question for me, i'm a terrible shotgunner, i can never get the drop on people, i always miss my shots, i always shoot from too far away, i always get melted, i always suck with shotguns. Even if shotgunning never becomes my favourite thing to do, i would at least like to be able to do well while using one. Can anyone give me advice. EDIT: Wow, thanks for all the great tips everyone, i haven't had much chance to put everything into practice yet (especially sensitivity as i've only raised it to 6 as i usually play on 4) but in the few matches i have played i've been keeping everything you've all said in mind and it has resulted in an overall improvement of my abilities, i think in the few games i had i managed to get 1 10+ kill streak using strictly my shotgun (granted the enemy was pretty bad) but still that is improvement for me as before i struggled to get a 5 kill streak now i'm getting them a little more frequently. I'm hoping i'll be able to really put this information to use during the iron banner this week.

  • i'm a middling shotgunner at best... that said, watch what the enemy is doing. learn something from every time you get killed. i was worse with shotguns until i turned my sensitivity up, maybe try slowly raising yours maybe a level a week until you're comfortable with quick turns and following the enemy. i used to always hip-fire but rolled a few shotguns with rangefinder, so you may want to get used to running in, tapping that LT for a quick zoom-in and blasting that way -- you don't have to hardscope the entire time to get your range bonus. try sliding, sometimes they don't expect it, but then sometimes they are... it takes practice. when someone's chasing you or rushing at you, duck around a corner and wait for them to show their faces or better yet, leap into the air and come right down on top of their head with a blast from whatever you're using. i screwed this one up and got lucky afterward, but here's an example of the jumping thing: http://xboxclips.com/QuiscalusMajor/1c12bbc6-4356-40f5-8541-b1db23959b15 http://xboxclips.com/QuiscalusMajor/7ea99bf1-3681-4bac-8c23-2a6435cd6148 if you see a Titan coming at you, hit them with your shotgun just before you think they're in range, nine times out of ten they'll shoulder charge right into your blast and die (or if you die, you may take them with you). you can tell they're about to shoulder charge due to the weird glow. find a shotgun with good range you're comfortable using and stick with it, get used to it, learn it inside and out. shotgun is love, shotgun is life.

  • If I use Bladedancer, one of my favorite tactics is going invisible and popping up around a corner. Proximity is key. Setting up for fast weapon swap always helps too.

  • Two things I haven't seen suggested yet: QuickDraw and Snapshot perks on guns and subclasses so you can switch to your shotgun fast and aim down sights faster if needed. Although it is better to trade off these perks for a more nasty, ranged roll. Equip for the area: Outside in the open? Have a primary or sniper etc. But as you run through tight corridors and rooms switch to shotguns/fusions. Also if you are waiting for someone to come round a corner throw a grenade out just before you move for the kill and they will be taking damage while on top of your normal attacks and it covers you from their teammates avenging them.

  • Max agility, faster melee perk for follow up punch. Max range shotgun. Play rumble a lot, it will sharpen up your reactions times and map knowledge rapidly. Don't stop moving, to me it feels like speed and momentum give you the advantage while shotgunning. Don't get a kill and stop, run/jump around the block for the next person. Higher look sensitivity, like 8 or 10. 3 or 4 for sniping. Use the burst of speed jump to launch at people. I'm no pro, far from it but this shit helps me!;)

    • Get better with whatever mobility options you have. Running shotgun is like sales, it's gonna require legwork. Seriously, you gotta break ankles like MJ sometimes. For example... Know someone is around the corner? Don't just run around it. Slide, jump, shade step, shoulder charge, etc. around it to throw them off from getting a bead on ya. Move in for the Dubya. Some one chasing you? Run through that door, break left, jump/hover, then dome them in top of their head as they come flying in. Dubya. Stuff like this is what I'd work on.

I was the same. Takes a lot of practice, but once you get the hang of it it's so much fun. Also helps to have increased agility and about 6 or 7 movement speed on your controller.

      • i was in the same boat as you. i hated shotguns and felt they were a ripoff from cod where u can kill em a mile away. but it took practice and got the hang of the guns style before i realized the damage i could do. dont ever aim it. shoot from hip fire only. you obvi have to be within range to get the 1 shot kill. always keep the gun pointed towards the enemies mid chest and above. you could end up getting head shots if done right. i dont know what guardian you main but your jumping skills will help a lot if you can maneuver around the enemy easily to distract/throw them off. (kind of like poking someone on left shoulder but hiding on the right side) observe your opponent, see what kind of weapon youre up against, thatll help you determine if you can even get the kill. the gun being cocked after each shot is also important, if its slow youre dead. always. fast reload helps too if youre in the midst of a duel. the best way to practice is running anything other than crucible that way you can get a hold of the enemies predictability and not worry about dying every 5 seconds. once you feel comfortable then go to crucible.

      • Getting the drop on people helps but is not always possible, look for a shotgun with either a high rate of fire and full auto. Or one with a good range and range based perks. Don't charge in with the shotgun, keep your primary equipped until they get about 20 feet away where closing the gap with a slide, blink, or shade step would be possible, if your shotgun is not full auto you'll probably only have the time to shoot one shell so don't fire until your sure it's lined up
