Since Year 1 I've almost always rolled as a Fireteam into Iron Banner so whether we raid or play PVP our connections are consistently green/good. Several of us have Gigabit/Fiber connections (3 of us) and the rest have around 30mb down/ 4-8mb up. I recall one other Iron Banner that had a significant amount of lag, but this month will go down as one of the top worst. I enjoyed The variation of Control/Clash/Rift but this was by far the worst experience because of lag and damage latency.
I understand the concept for going towards SBMM but the underlying issue is that Destiny PvP is Peer to Peer! Pair that with a large portion of the player base having mediocre at best internet speeds (in a digital/streaming era) and an epidemic of kids flooding their networks or dropping their MTU/pings to gain an advantage and you have the recipe for a horrible online gaming experience.
I played a ton of Iron Banner this past week and not exaggerating every single match reflected 20%-100% of the opposing team showing extreme signs of latency. 75%+ of the top scorers on the opposing team were lagging/skipping around. I myself even experienced latency, severe network fluctuations and a zoo's worth of disconnect error codes!
Here's some other fun facts, I run a firewall and pretty sophisticated network configuration and hardware where I can view, log and block individual IP's and also monitor connected players pings in real time. I have custom alerts that notify me when an opposing or connected member's ping fluctuates 50-100ms from their initial recorded baselines. So I can tell when someone tries to lag-switch, flood or at worse tries to attack my network in real time. It's absolutely astounding how many blatant cheaters this game has!!! Many of which I'll send a message afterwards, confronting them or even showing them a screenshot of their connection shenanigans, many of which confirm or joke that there's nothing wrong with what they're doing or the hilarious "get on my level scrub, lol"... So much for the Banhammer or in game reporting (which I use) in addition to blocking their IP manually after each night of playing.
