[Social Experiment] What is (currently) humanity's most important concern? And why?

Environment (pollution, over population, natural disaster)

213

Government (corruption, underdeveloped, warfare)

432

Scientific Innovation (space flight, nuclear power, medicine)

180

Other (specify)

First social experiment of the new year, hope it goes well. I'm trying to get less opinionated, and more open ended with these, let me know if you would like to see a specific topic be covered in the future, or how you like this one. Thank you. ------------------------------------------------- What is humanity's most important concern as of now, and why? -------------------------------------------------- I would like to remind you that I said "most important" and NOT "biggest" or "most tended to". You're answer, whatever it may be, will be in the form of an opinion, and will not be right or wrong. Now, when you answer this, I also wish that you include your point of view. Are you a science major, are you a soldier, are you a doctor, etc.? This makes it easier for me, or an onlooker, to understand where you are coming from, and agree or disagree with your reasoning. Also, issues like hunger, widespread disease, education, etc, would fall under government. These faults can be amended by governments, which is clear to see from the distinction between "first" and "third" world countries. Every time you vote in a poll and don't comment, the Lego fairy covers your floor with Legos that will eventually shred through your feet like a chainsaw would butter. Also, just a quick short example of why I ask for your point of view, I just saw these interesting trio of different answers that help to explain why I ask:

Geopolitics. This is coming from a PoliSci student Can't have nice things when one country is being a dick to everyone.

As per our current societal structure, the only sure-fire way to change the environment or our scientific proficiency, is through government intervention. Therefore the Government should come first. Background: I'm a philosophy graduate.

Science. Government corruption will never be solved. Try and name a single government that is not rotten to the core. Let me add, with increased scientific research humanity will gain better solutions to our problems. The advancements that humanity has taken in the past 200 years can be fully attributed to science. -Stem major
As you can see, an obvious difference in thinking occurs, which is helpful in understanding the reasoning for an answer. • Based off the three broad categories that you've provided, i'd place government first, environment second, and scientific innovation third. All of these things are important, don't get me wrong, and i'll explain why I chose them in this order. The reasoning is relatively simple, government first because order needs to be maintained for humanity to thrive, advance, and even survive. Secondly, environment, because seeing as this is the only planet that we have to live on currently, it's within our best interest to preserve it for as long as possible, and since government and order would have been tended to first, it'll be easier for us to research and find new ways to do so as a whole without resources and time being wasted trying to contain and stop chaos and warfare. Thirdly, scientific innovation, because with an orderly world and relatively preserved earth, we'd have the time, resources and space necessary to focus on advancing forward without the distraction of having to worry about the prior two categories as much. I know this seems idealistic because I speak as though we'll be able to completely fix any of these problems, which we won't, and I know this, but if the problems in each category are at least minimized, it can potentially create stable ground to work on the others in a more efficient manner in the order i've suggested. There are probably plenty of holes in my ideas, and i'm open to criticism, but it seems to make a decent amount of sense in theory.

  • Personally I believe it should be our environment. However, I also think this correlates to science as well. Over-population is a serious concern. The Earth isn't getting any bigger and we need to think of ways to combat the population growth. This is where science could come in. We've already began planning and theorising ways to terraform Mars. I believe with enough research and resources, we could turn Mars' atmosphere into one which could sustain human life and combat our population overgrowth. :)

  • We are not focusing on furthering technology enough. We need to remove religion from influencing our research.

Government... most issues can be fixed with the Government being fixed. Polluting, hunger, homelessness, corruption in other branches of office, corruption in corporations... the list really goes on.

      • IMO corrupted officials effect the other issues in the category directly and indirectly.

              • Food for thought^ TL;DW - Our general mindset as a species is the cause of most of our problems. Even if we give it our most valiant and unselfish efforts to create a solution, if the way we're thinking of the solution is wrong, than anything we do to fix our problems will only make them worse.

              • Lack of religion. If you could have every wish you want fulfilled and all you had to do was believe in God, you'd be a fool not to become a Christian. I mean who honestly cares about what happens in the real world when we have a perfect world left to go to?

I would say government corruption is the biggest , but not the most important. You will never have a perfect government, so as long as money (or greed in general) exists, that will never be fixed. Environmental is the most important in my mind. America is drying up like a raisin (look at California and Lake Mead for shitsakes), and some places are becoming more crowded. For a person of my standards, I live in a farming town of 8500 people, we have plenty more than enough water to go around, and life is good. When I go to a city, scares the shit out of me to think that other countries have bigger and less spacious cities, and on top of that, less basic supplies to go around. But it's not just that. The world in general is changing, and certain environments are becoming inadequate to live in. Edit1: the environment will continually be destroyed, because the industries that destroy it are the ones bringing in the cash flow.
I live in Southern Alberta, where your average folk are conservative white people, with the average family owning 3 or more trucks and 4 off-road vehicles.
• Environment by quite a large margin compared to your other options. We are literally destroying the Earth and it needs to stop.

I'd say Environmental. We have always been developing alternatives to our most used methods. Such as Ethanol, we can use it as a main fuel , but instead we mix it with gasoline. Hydrogen cells for vehicles have been Around for more than 10 years. They are finally hitting the main developers on the market. Then we are conserving oil the best we can and making use of everything we can get from it. I'd say environmental issues are our greatest concern for the future but other issues just speak the loudest.

                      • Probably environmental issues. For they affect us all. Once we've made some progress with that, I think we could move on to other things.

                        • The environment. We have a responsibility to take care of our home. Governments come and go. Space will always be there to explore. But Earth is ours to take care or abuse.
