Why Bungie may not be listening

Taking a step back from the argument about whether or not Bungie listens to criticism or not, let's look at a little math: 12,869,066×$60=$772,143,960 That is how much money Bungie and Activision made off of just the players currently playing, without including the DLC. With their stated budget of $500,000,000 they've made over 150% of their budget on the first installment of the game franchise. They are not getting a monthly incentive to keep us playing (no monthly fees). I dont know their operating costs or the taxes involved, so will not speculate on their profit margin. Even without that monthly incentive, economics tells them that Destiny is a rousing success, whether or not we continue to play. This is by no means an all-inclusive reason, as the combined total time of play by all people playing is 99,589.541 years, and the game has only been out for 3 months. That's almost 100 MILLENNIA of playtime, in 3 MONTHS! To continue, the beginning of something even resembling this kind of instantaneous feedback from a developer was Mass Effect 3 and its horrible ending. That set the precedent of a game developer bowing to the community. However, it may be an anomaly and not a precedent. What it did create was the belief that the community had the power to brow beat a developer until they capitulate. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with their actions, or whether or not they are listening (despite the title), the simple fact is that, from the standpoint of economics, Destiny is a successful game. Feel free to slander me at your own convenience. EDIT: I thank you all for your replies. Whether supportive, detractive, praising, or derogatory you took the time to read my post and reply. I've learned a lot from it. My maths are flawed. I understand. The point of this post was to get people to take a step back and think; to consider things objectively. I hope this was accomplished. Thank you for your time.

We're listening. Even better, we're iterating. Keep talking to us. If nothing else, the UPDATES portion of the Bungie Blog is evidence of a willingness to support Destiny post-launch.

    • I'd say your math is off. Your forgetting marketing...advertisements....there's more to it than just the 60 bucks they make on a game. And they don't get 60 bucks....that's to include the cut the vendors get for selling the game... they make more like 45-55 bucks in reality. Real reason they don't listen? Majority of the people who post here say "I SUE YOU!" "I WANT REFUND BECAUSE IM STUPID" "DO THIS OR ELSE BECAUSE I SAID SO" "NERF _____ BECAUSE I SUCK" "BUFF_____ BECAUSE I SAID SO" "YOU SUCK BECAUSE YOU BROKE MY OP REALITY" "I HAVE TO FARM MORE GLIMMER" "I HAVE TO "WORK" HARDER NOW TO MAINTAIN MY BADASSNESS IN GAME" you get the idea.... (Note I'm only typing up what THEY see...not necessarily what you "see/say") - Get's old after the 1000th time... I don't blame them honestly. Now if they where constructive...rational...and not steaming pile of a babies diaper of crap...... might get somewhere.

        • I know you are done with this post, but you can't forget that every country besides the US pays more money for the game than we do. 60 pound is around 90 dollars, just for the vanilla game. Not to mention most people either own the first dlc at 20 or the season pass at 35.

        • I know this was pretty much dead, but I think after this latest update was released it's very clear that while they are listening, they aren't acting on it in any way. The bugs with the vault of glass remain as do many other bugs in the game in general, but they did fix the cheeses in Crota's Raid. Basically from an outside looking in viewpoint, they saw players find a way to take a few hours off their play-time by cheesing/cheating and jumped on top of that to fix. I have no problem with them fixing those things, I just believe that they should put the same priority on the bugs that they do the cheeses.

          • listening and acting upon what they hear are two different things. we asked for raid/ heroic matchmaking - nothing we asked for trading - nothing we asked for fixes to engrams - said they did fix it - still -blam!-ed up. we asked for fixed pvp drops - nothing

            • In my opinion the game needs to evolve into a MMO . Think if all the players playing destiny were on the same game field at the same time. where the tower in just one outpost Of meany in a large-scale open freerom world. Where you hear the conversations of others outside of your party just by being close to them and dieing means you respond back at the last outpost you visited after a set time .Landscape from Giant scale cities to swamps and forests, cemeteries, caves, abandon highways, neighborhoods airports and junk yards land marks ect basically the facility's and hubs that makes our World. Where your team is nolonger limeted to a set amount of players . Where every mission is a public event and could easily turn in to a territory war or landgrab by enemy fractions. We're not at every Guardian has to stay a good . Having the choose to be bad and go rogue or even side with enemy factions. Where you could lead an army of enemy soldiers of different size and class depending on the reputation you hold within that faction. Using your ship and sparrow to travel places would become a necessity . weapons and armor upgrade ability would only be limited to your pocketbook in true grinder fashion .skills are skill should have to get your grind on . a boss battle would become a battle of bossess or a war against a boss because you could a boss. Now Add in the game we play now too that after slight alteration to the character menu platform. look I wrote the script for destiny 3 and made billions for you bungie if you cheap lazy ads make it this way lol

            • Bungie would still be wise to listen and respond to player feedback for the following reasons: 1. Getting current Destiny players (or those who have stopped playing) to buy future Destiny content beyond House of Wolves. Many players feel like they were betrayed by Bungie marketing lies into pre ordering not only the main game but the expansion pass for it as well. Unless Bungie addresses the issues current players have with the game, they can expect a drastic decline in at least pre orders for content beyond House of Wolves. This includes Destiny 2. I know I personally will never be pre ordering a Bungie product again and will not purchase unless it receives good critical and user reviews. 2. Maintaining the Positive Image Bungie has Up until Destiny, Bungie was seen as the ideal developer. One that had intensely strong ties to it's player base. Destiny has caused those relationships to become strained if not break completely for many players. This hurts the Bungie brand. The launch of Destiny and The Dark Below expansion have already stained Bungies stellar reputation and this hurts investor trust. It also hurts consumer trust. While they may view the immediate financial success of Destiny as a win, overall I think the developers future has been hurt in the long run by all the negativity. They would be wise to make some moves to correct their mistakes and restore consumer faith, ties to the player base and investor trust

              • video games are boom and bust, yes destiny is popular and profitable but what happens when they make garbage and lose 40 mil i would imagine ubi is taking it hard with unity. that game is horrible. even for an AC game it's bad i do think they could make even more money if they addressed bugs and player concerns though. warping enemies in public events, no assantant energy/shard swap system like radiant has. vanguard guns need more rotation. there is no way besides luck to get a void fusion rifle for example. the gates in VOG atheon still bug on occasion, i could keep going. yes i understand fixing crota exploits but please focus on actual bugs as well.

                • Candy Crush made a shit tonne of dough too, what's your point? Bungie lied about what the game will be, we trusted them and handed over our cash. Now we're stuck with a steaming pile of garbage. A lot of us(thankfully not me) were so convinced by their lies that they bought the season pass and now feel obligated to play it. My name is Mgc8tball and I'm an addict. I'm Destiny free for 16 days. Never felt better.

                  • Activision has told Bungie not to jump so quick to those that are the most vocal. They did that with CoD, listening to runners and gunners, and auto-aim snipers, and they killed that franchise off. Activision has hemorrhaged gamers this generation, they are not about to fall into their old routines of excluding everyone, to satisfy a small but vocal minority.

                    • What about people? Bungie is not 1 person. It's a team of people who all do their part. They are just like us, gamers. They like stuff and dislike stuff , they have opinions and arguments to back up those opinions. They want to make something to be proud of, to look back at and to say, this was a game that was important for the gaming industry and gamers. That's why things could change for the better, destiny could evolve and yes, they will listen to the community. You look at this from just one perspective, marketing. But I look at it as a piece of art. You like it or you don't, you can look at it in different ways and we all see something different. It's art, and yes, art sells. But it will evolve and become legend. Time will tell.

They never communicated with the fans and their ending-slideshow was their last resort to shut up the greatest gaming-shitstorm to date. And just to add insult to injury they did it to "clarify their artistic vision" (meaning that they think the customers were too stupid to understand their lazy ducked up effort)

                      • They will not stop doing what they are doing until destiny 2 flops because of thier treachery. That is the bottom line. By that time ir will be to late. They have our money now and dont care they have already doomed sales of the next title becuase of all this and thats the end of it. Enjoy whatever thrills you can out of this game while it lasts becausr this 10 year plan is only gonna last 3 tops

                        • Bungie will continue the course they have chosen with Destiny and what they want it to be. Introducing a game with many new features is a bold move, and being financially profitable a success. My only resentment lies with the pretentious pre game release teasing of an epic story/lore/lone wolf campaign features of this game. None of that is actually in the game. I would have bought the game anyway, being an old Bungie fan, the graphics and Marty's music alone are worth it. The expectations of finding joy as a single player though were crushed pretty much right away. I didn't ask for a great story and engaging characters, but Bungie told me they were definitely in Destiny. I'm still looking...
Hope they hired new writers, that was what killed it for me. Would prefer just silence and Marty's music.
