There are so many opinions out there and so many points I thought I'd help clear this up.
1 - The comparison to a mmo is flawed, in a game like W.O.W. you level a character not your gear. Destiny binds your level to your gear and if you need to start over with a new piece you lose your higher level. Think of it like the increase 10 levels but to get them you need to give up 5 levels, at least if you want to compare to a mmo.
2 - If, like me, you have already spend your time farming ascendant materials, planet materials, and xp, you've already spent more time then anyone will now have to for the same thing. Doesn't that count for anything? We will be required to do double the work for the same result and that can't be allowed. Also if you think the new buying materials will be much faster here's the stats. You need 64 materials, that's 30 marks worth equaling 5 tiger strikes, which in patrol could only take an 45min to an hour depending on spot.
3 - This move may not affect you now if you don't have much gear but consider this. If we let them do it now what's to stop them in the next DLC? How many weapons will you have then?
4 - My last 2 cents here is that this shows a lack of respect and understanding of there most loyal players. If you don't want new people to feel left out or fall behind make the game take less of their time, instead of adding arbitrary limits and resets to slow down people who have chosen to and enjoy player your game. What is so wrong or game breaking about letting us have the xp on our gear when it's changed? Is the DLC so short and easy that you need to force this reset to keep people playing?
If I am mistaken about anything please let me know, I don't claim to know everything this is just an answer to what I've seen in the forum and blog post.

I think you've got it right. If nothing else, it begs the question: why didn't we hear about the changes until a week before the DLC drops? I spent loads of time completing Exotics--some as recently as two weeks ago--only to then find out that I shouldn't have bothered. Pretty frustrating.

I fully agree, as a loyal player I feel like we are getting SCREWED in favor of NOOBS ... coz they want MEDIOCRITY
-
Your perks will reset which does suck but it'll have a higher attack out of the box then its previous max over 300
-
I agree with this. I have spent so much time and material in levelling up exotic gear - wasted time and material - and now I should restart?
-
I see nothing wrong with having to continue to level up my current maxed exotics to keep them relevant.

If current exotics were allowed to be maxed out when dlc comes out, what's the point of the other guns then you already have awesome stuff.
