Why Day 1 DLC actually Exists. Just a friendly reminder.

So as a game developer myself, I see a lot of ignorance in the way that a game is treated when it is discovered that content is "on the disc" This info-graphic was released back during the mass effect shit storm, and it holds true to this day. If you don't want the developer to fire half the art staff every time a game finishes preproduction, be happy that day one dlc exists.

  • I have no problem with day one DLC, or DLC being unlocked from the disc... Unless the game is shallow. This game isn't what they said it was going to be, and then you learn that content that we could have had at day one was cut to offer as DLC. Not planned, but CUT. Nope.

    • Thats true, but in this case it feels like the staff was moved to DLC prematurely.

Honestly. If people feel like the cost of Destiny and DLC is too expensive then they need to stop playing video games and get a damn job (or a better one). This is ridiculous.

      • I'm sorry, but day 1 DLC like with Mass Effect is BS and is only done to try and force you to buy the game new instead of used. Especially when they include the code for the DLC in with the disc. That said, I don't have any issue currently with what was found out about Destiny. They have to draw the line at some point and ship the product. Also the info that came out did nothing to show that the content was finished, simply that the data for some of the places are already on the map but not unlocked/visible. And when you look at it, it seems like there's still a lot missing (why is there 2 raids for one DLC, but only 1 for the other? Why are there only like 2 story missions being added?). Now if those zones/missions were 100% completed and on the disc, then I would say that it is BS to make us pay extra (assuming it was an entire DLC arc and not just 1-2 missions that would leave the story hanging), but I don't think that is what has happened here and I haven't seen anything showing that that is what has happened.

      • Metal gear solid ground zeroes has more content than this game and was more than half the price.

        • Sheit, what people seem to forget is that it takes practically the GDP of a small country to produce one game let alone one as far reaching as this one will hopefully will be. Probably never played a mmorpg game in their lives. The stuff that was found was probably for an event update soon in the future. Hell, the Queens Wrath mission was probably already on the disc since day one as well. The reason they may choose to do this is to save massively long download times, which people would probably bitch about as well. All they have to do if the content is already on the HD is flip a switch with a small update and off you go. But people aren't willing to wait it out and get all butt hurt when something that may or may not be true pops up. And to everybody crying about paywalls and other crap......be glad you don't have to pay a monthly sub. 10-20 bucks for more content is a fùggin pittance to pay employees to create new content. Ask a WOW player how much they spend annually just to play a game and STILL pay for expansions that cost practically the same as a brand new game.

          • If the finished DLC is on disc (highly unlikely) and expands on the story (kind of the point)...I really don't care much. I feel I got my monies worth so far. If I had not played the beta and just bought the game straight out on release...I would still be hooked playing.

            • I guess this isn't bad if the game comes with enough content to be worth 60 dollars. In my opinion, this game isn't worth 30.

              • My opinion is that if DLC is on disc behind a paywall (I'm not stating that it is with this game) then by definition it's not DLC and therefor a dishonest practice. It infers that original content has been removed from the game purposely with the intention of charging extra for it at a later date.

                • Its when dlc 2 is also found on the disc and the game has no story. It's very clear this games story got butchered.

The problem with a lot of day one DLC that is already on the disk, though, is that customers view it as a paywall preventing then from accessing everything on the disk they purchased. They spend $60 on the game, then buy day one DLC and get a 108kb key download. That DLC cost an additional $5-$15 depending on the publisher. That's not DLC. That's just paying extra for content on the disk that was already paid for. It starts to feel like a blatant money grab by publishers. Especially if the content is more than just cosmetic items, but full fledged areas/story parts of the game that were purposefully ripped from the core game just to be paid for, later. Publishers and developed come up with all sorts of excuses as to why content is on the disk but locked behind a paywall, but consumers are buying those excuses less and less each day. If there's going to be day one DLC, then it damn well better be an actual download and not just a key file to unlock what was on the disk.

                  • Okay... Day One COSMETIC DLC is fine. Anything that effect the story, give the player an unfair advantage, or locks off players from certain areas if they do NOT pay, is NOT okay. Texture packs, extra weapons with no real effect on the actual game, exclusive armor, etc. Thats fine. An entire Party member integral to the Story proper, a set of story missions, a multiplayer gametype. NOT okay.

                    • Instead of day one DLC how about they just add it into the first DLC pack along with other new stuff? That way no one feels ripped off and the DLC just feels like an expansion pack instead of a scam. -.- #Cut

                    • No wonder it isn't on PC, those -blam!-ers at Activision must have known that they would have hacked the game by now and would probably be playing the ACTUAL game by now.

                        • DLC is fine. Its the story that has many of us livid. They didn't release a fleshed out story plain and simple. Too many holes and misunderstandings.

                        • So, basically the way the industry works is broken, and because it's broken they have no choice but to nickel and dime the end-user? Since when is gross incompetence an acceptable excuse for greed? Protip: fix your shit. DLC isn't the solution to a problem, it just throws a rug over it . I think we're about due for another industry crash, clear out some of these stagnant devs.

                          • I have no issue with DLC in and of itself and completely understand why it exists. What is at issue is that the release is lacking for many people. It would seem that in order for the game to be a whole release they should have upped the price point so that they could cover the true costs of development. The story feels shredded and appears to be as far as we know and will ever know. So its not the presence of DLC, its just the appearance that there is something more that is held back when the release feels so incomplete.
