Destiny changed how i see game reviews

i just wanted to say that because of destiny i am officially ignoring game reviews from now on. Yes many of the bad things pointed out by reviewers and players alike are very true(story, repetitive, voice acting, etc). But for me none of those things take away from the fact that attempting alien genocide with a handful of buddies is just so blamin fun! I love the cycle of kill, loot, back to town, reapeat. Iv never played a dungeon crawler(yep, thats what im calling it) that was such a joy gameplay wise(looking at u diablo 3!). So b4 i just keep rambling about why im so hooked on this game, ill just say that iv concluded that formerly trusted review houses dont have my interests and game sensibilities in mind when writing their reviews. Iv never held reviews as the primary factor when deciding to buy a game, but it was a consideration. But now after seeing the almost fervently angry reviews(gamespot, polygon, and escapist in particular) these people clearly are not in line with my interest and their opinions will get 0 consideration in my decision making process in the future.

  • The sites you mentionned in your post are bad because they make their money off ads (tl;dr biased reviews)

    • The only thing I would request from bungie is that they raise the weekly cap on crucible and vanguard marks, just to 200, being dedicated to earning vanguard marks specifically I can burn through too the 100 in a day of productive gaming, and on that note, when earning vanguard rep, an additional 50 rep points to each strike playlist wouldn't hurt. Bare in mind I don't won't the game to be made easier, I just wish I could earn more rep/marks for the time i put in, other than that, Bungie, thank you for this glorious gift of gaming

      • Reviewers usually want to be first to present a review, thus they dont get the full scope of the game and give a crappy review. As for a short story: no. The copy of Destiny that everyone bought is Chapter 1, DLC and updates will have the rest of the chapters in the future.

      • Im sorry man but the reviewers are right. The mechanics of the game are sound and shooting aliens is fun but its super shallow for a next gen, half billion dollar game. A big world with very little to discover or explore and no story to get lost in. Mass effect, borderlands, bioshock even dishonored. have these in spades. Gta is also better. Less refined graphics, less money spent, much better games. The fun of destiny is at a high level with friends but most gamers arent looking for that. People dont want to grind for 20 hours and then have it be fun and the majority of gamers want immersive single player adventure. Look at whats coming out. Shadow of mordor, sherlock holmes, dragon age, the evil within and assassins creed. All these will look to make their bones by telling interesting, immersive stories.

        • After they game this a 7.8(IGN), I'm assuming that game reviewers are basing their ratings not off of how FUN THE VIDEO GAME IS, but off of how much content it has in it. How do you call a game bad if it's so fun that people are addicted to it?

          • I dunno, Years ago I used to get very cheesed off when I spend money on a new game that turned out to be garbage. Reviews if anything provide a bit of guidance - I don't care for the actual number score it's as at the end of the day it's one guys opinion. I like the organic reviews of the community on things like metacritic and such but unfortunately these are being abused by fanboys and the like. If destiny got a 0 out of 10 so what I'd still be playing it and I'd still be hooked to it.

            • Great point. I will mention call of duty (take you pick ) almost always hit 9 or 10 on ratings and reviews for a 8 hour story. Love the game but destiny took me 23 hrs to complete the story so far. Also the "grind" that is claimed to be tedious and repetitive...it's part of a game like this. As a PC , ps4 and Xbox 360 gamer I think instant self gratification should take a back seat and hard work/effort can finally stand out thanks to a game like this.

              • Well it's great you have finally learned that major game reviewers have flawed opinions or ones that don't appeal to you. But that doesn't mean its bad, and unreliable. Their reviews do not reflect the ideas of the entire company only their own. It truly is hard to find a non bias reviewer.

Gamers have got to stop treating them like the end all in a discussion about a game.

                • Agree, for example at polygon, the reviewer said he does not like grinding for loot ... but then in a separate comment he says he like diablo?

                  • A big thing about the reviews here is they ave stated the game doesn't take off till after 20 and then some. They reviewed it for maybe a couple hours(because they were not given pre-releases of the game), but for a game like this you need more time to see it for what it is. I approve of this game and wish it the best of luck and look forward to posting feedback and watching this game mature and mold towards how the players(because were the ones who matter) envision the perfect game. Thanks Bungie Icey

                  • There's not much I can say that hasn't been said. I can see Destiny's flaws as clearly as anyone else. All I know is that it hooked me bad. I've spent every free moment since the game came out playing. I'm having more fun with Destiny than any game I've played in recent memory. That counts for more than anything else IMO. If I compare the score Destiny got on gamespot with other games I've played that they gave much higher scores to, I find that I'd rather play Destiny than pretty much any of them. What does that mean? In my case it means that Gamespot was flat out wrong. Gaming is so subjective though. I can't say that other people who don't like the game don't have a point, but why can't they see what I see in it? They count things against Destiny that I initially was miffed about as well, but have since faded into the background as I really get into the meat of the game. It's really all about character advancement and playing a shooter that is so tight and elegantly constructed that every moment is a joy. The game has flaws, but they are outweighed by the overall experience to such an extent that the games still shines in my opinion.

                  • I think I'm one of the few who didn't actually know that much about Destiny coming in to it. I knew it was by "the Halo guys", and Halo is a series I've not had much experience of as I've been a Playstation owner for 4 generations of console now. I knew it was a sci-fi shooter, there was some multiplayer stuff that was important to it, and that was about it. Then the game released, and suddenly I was struggling to find enough bodies to put together a squad for Battlefield 4 because everybody was playing Destiny instead. So, I asked around and was told it was pretty good. I had a PS3 sitting gathering dust and decided I might as well trade it in, and ended up buying Destiny - with some trepidation given how most reviewers treated it. The thing is, I've played a few MMO's in my time with hundreds of hours especially on WoW and more recently DCOU, and what's struck me is that most reviewers simply don't seem to have "got" what this game actually is. I've known for years that when it comes to certain "AAA" franchises that review scores are bought (I'm looking at you, CoD...), but now I also think that some reviewers, in their rush to get something written up and published, are either lazy or not paying attention, or perhaps just didn't have enough time to get the thing played properly through. It seems many of them got to the end of the story and thought that was the end of it. Reviews can be a useful way to find out a bit more about the core mechanics of a game and whatnot, but to get a clear picture of how a game actually is then wait for it to release and see what the players' reactions to it are. I'm definitely glad I chose to ignore the opinions of the "professional" reviewers in the case of Destiny!

To comment on the story, at first I was expecting an amazing story that just keeps going and is so immersing it will take me forever to complete. I had no clue what to expect, only that there is Darkness and we must save the dying traveler as a Guardian. Once I finished the campaign, I was basically left in the same state as before I started, if not more confused and had so many questions to get answered. I decided that the story was weak and under-developed, maybe even over-hyped. However...... I have recently come to my senses and realized what Bungie did there. They plan to keep this going for 10 years to come, with content always being released and so on. Well, with a vague campaign such as the one they presented, what more but a perfect opportunity do they have to go ANYWHERE and do WHATEVER they wanted with the story. It adds such a depth of mystery and lore to the game that we don't even get to finished it within 6 hours. We get to explore, adventure and protect the City, grind gear, commit alien genocide and look completely badass doing it all, for the next 10 years. How does THAT not qualify as a great game? Bungie has so many different paths they can go down with the story and add on literally whatever they want to the skeleton they have right now, so that in 10 years, we have this phenomenal game with incredible lore, story, and gameplay. We get to experience this. We get to thrive here. We get to be curious. We get to be confused. We get to have questions slowly answered and watch puzzle pieces fall perfectly into place. We get to Become Legend.

                    • Loving the game! Makes you wonder what the reviewers were expecting to get, and to what level they bothered to achieve before formulating their opinion. If I'd relied on reviews I'd have passed on this game - a horrific prospect, given that it's quickly become an enjoyable obsession.

There are 100s of reviewers and review companies from all sorts of channels and that's because of the diverse personalities. I always read select reviews just to see what other people thought of the game see what type of experience they had. Specifically to see if they saw something I didn't. It is a shame of the low reviews many people gave Destiny especially those who did it before even unlocking everything in the game. Finding the writer who plays like you, has similar interests like you and just likes to commit alien genocide like you can help you connect better. Good luck Guardian and I found Dungeon Crawler to be an appropriate name for it too.

Ima go ahead and say it, review companies weren't paid, they weren't bribed (as much as they wanted it this time), and Microsoft is still butthurt about losing their biggest in house money maker, with bungie becoming independant. Money talks, and apparently influences game review websites. I have to agree with many people in this thread. Maybe not bying every game, but "lets plays" and gameplay videos > "official reviews" any day. TLDR; Decide for your own damn self, don't be a sheep and base your own opinions off bribed companies.
