Prox chat griefing, WTF bungie.

The only thing I can find as to why prox chat/in-game voice is not in destiny is because of little kids and trolls griefing other players. Now I don't know about you but almost all of my online friends I met through random encouters, be it Xbox live or PSN or B.net. If every game had bungie's attitude toward socializing with people you DON'T know the online gaming community would be dead. If you don't like meeting new people and only want to play with those you do know maybe it's time you jump in your delorian, hit 88mph and have a lan party back in 90's EDIT: I think most of the nay sayers are missing my point. We all play online games Ps3, ps4, xbox 360, xbone, doesn't matter we all have a friends list, full of friends, made up of mostly people we met online in whatever game it is you play. If the various different games youve played over the years did what bungie is doing just how many people on your list would be gone? Never met because why? Well it's because all people who talk are annoying so voice chat should be removed. REALLY? ARE YOU PEOPLE KIDDING? I just don't buy it, I don't believe that none of you understand this. EDIT 2: /Game chat, if as one guy said they are bubbles, then turn the tower into a game chat bubble, only 16 players on your screen at any given time with an off option so its manageable, too many jackasses, orbit, back, new 16. Don't get me wrong im not just arguing prox chat, a open text based system in the tower would suffice, so long as there is some form of communication outside your fire team. As it stands without the ability to speak to "that cool lookin titan over there" this game is no more social then CoD or halo, infact it is less so since you can only communicate in game with those in your fireteam. EDIT 2.5: IMO Most griefers are CoD players, thats why I don't play CoD anymore (that and the game play went down hill really fast after CoD 4) I now seldom hear idiots screaming at other idiots, without the ability to 360 no scope in an mlg pro 1v1 lobby, those players will be gone soon enough.

  • If I told you they added prox chat would you go stand on a soapbox in the tower and do your ranting with your mic there?

You're assuming they didn't run into technical issues with the way they designed Destiny to work and the effects that it may have had on implementing a proximity chat system with the way that players phase in and out of different game instances.

  • AFAIK, there is fire team chat, so you will still have plenty of opportunities to meet random people in strikes. I suspect the lack of proximity chat has more to do with their T for Teen rating than anything else. Personally, I'd like to see prox chat available but disabled by default; I'm not sure what the situation is on PS but xbox parental controls allow good control over internet chat.

My entire friends list is made up of people I know in real life. I don't add anyone I meet online. I know you, and some others might, but I would appreciate you not making sweeping generalizations. Not everyone is like you.

  • They talked about this during the pax conference. It seems it's a headache for Bungie that they weren't able to address by launch... Maybe in the future

The tower just needs a chat box if they're not going to add proximity chat. Bungie is fully capable of even putting in a language filter so that little kids aren't spamming cuss words. It would add a lot more of a social aspect to the tower and make it easier to find people interested in doing Raid's or joining clans. I mean seriously, Playstation Home has a chat box.

    • Prox chat would be a nightmare of trolling and general irritation. However, some kind of social communication beyond voice-chat in teams is definitely required. A chat box would be fine.

    • I have no use for proxy chat and no desire for it but im not such a fool i think it isnt retarded its not there for the people that do. Bungie claimed it was a social game not a social game for deaf mutes, the only downside people can come up with is chat abuse lmfao. There should be proximity chat in the wild and p2p or p2group chat in the tower by invite, not proximity. On top of that there should be a way to add anyone to your fireteam who your in conversation with which doesnt involve horrible slow psn invites or a return to space.

    • Well I can tell you that out of all the people on my friends list only two of them are not people that I know in the real world. Of those two, one I have been gaming with for over four years and the other about a year. It's been my experience that while playing online and meeting new people I've added and remove a lot of them from my friends list mostly because after a while people become assholes. Now, I'll be the first to admit it could be me, because I am not a child. I am an older game and I do not find things like greifing, hacking, cheating and mods to be fun or even remotely funny. Ruining other peoples fun as a form of entertainment for yourself or your asshole friends to watch in the background and laugh is just shity. Myself and people I play with also don't live and die by our K/D either. Getting a kill on someone and then telling them how we're going to sleep with their mother or calling them some childish name is not the type of players we are nor is it the type of players we like associate with. Have I ever talked shit online, sure we all have. However there is something just wrong with the world when a nine year old child tells me he/she is going "-blam!- my mom in the ass". Sure you can meet some good people online, I'm not saying it impossible. I for one totally get why Bungie did what they did. Spend 30 seconds reading the forums and you will see people can be really immature when they have the safety of a keyboard or a headset. I do think however proxy chat should have been in the game as an option but by default set to off. If you want it then you can go and turn it on.

      • I think Bungie made the right call about the Fireteam only chat. I actually gained more friends in a smaller amount of time the way it was set up. It kept the interactions game/mission related. Others have commented that it was silly to send an invite just to watch them go to orbit then back; I didn't find this to be that much of an inconvenience, I don't really remember it, but I imagine this could be made a seamless interaction. The only thing I did was set my Fireteam such that anyone could join. I sent no invites at all. I just played the game. This system creates a clear starting point for the interactions and that contributes to it being a more natural/organic experience. It keeps it a positive action; internally saying "yes, I want to play with them." In other games it's a "no, I don't want to hear you." Everywhere outside of the Tower was a 'mission.' The Tower is the social hub of the game and that's where the 'on-by-default/publc/prox chat' people want belongs if it gets added at all. I also think a clan message board in the Tower would be a good idea as well. There are situations that a Fireteam could be automatically created; PvP, Strikes, and anywhere else that the game puts you on a team. This could override the individual Fireteam settings and then the 'to orbit and back' doesn't need to happen. Besides, prior to those team events we're all in orbit already and it would just make sense to do it there. Public Events; there could be a setting like "Public Event Chat: On/Off" This way a 3 person Fireteam could be doing the Explore missions, join a Publilc Event, communicate with the randoms/non-teammates during the event, then finish the event with their Fireteam still intact. I don't how difficult any of these things would be to add/change. I'm not even asking for them. The thing that has bothered me most about the chat debate is that, often, it's both sides saying "my way is better and you're wrong." I think there are ways that the wants of those for public/prox chat can be met that won't cause those of us that don't want it to go back to excluding ourselves. I loved how it worked in the beta. I loved how I would be in a 'public' space and I didn't have to select 'mute all' to enjoy my experience. I can see where some things could be changed to satisfy more, if not all, with regard to chat settings. But if nothing changes I'll be totally cool with that. Other things I loved about the chat; it was in surround sound, it was affected by the environment, and it was impacted by distance.

      • The other reason they don't have proxy chat is it's not nearly as easy as it was before. Things have changed both the culture, tech, and needs have all changed. When I match make multiplayer the lobby and game is silent, even in strikes I played 6 in the beta and no one was talking at all. So I just go straight to party chat with my friends, clan, or girlfriend. Yeah I met a lot of people through game chat, and matches but didn't really meet anyone through proxy chat. Yeah there were some fun moments with proxy chat while playing hide and seek in halo but it was mostly irritating for me and them. Proxy chat just isn't important anymore. This is a hyper connected world. We don't need proxy chat, with all the connections we have made. I personally would rather not have than have to deal with the problems it had. Just my two cents.

I get what your saying however I will say you have ways of talking to people without a in-game chat. Such as you can msg them, add them, & create a Text Chat. But I have seen the very worst of where in-game chat systems can go & I assure you, it can go very very bad. I agree with Bungie's decision as they desire to create a good atmosphere one with little to no drama if possible, removing it ensures less likely hood of it happening. You must understand 2 things. 1: Any world humans enter, it will develop politics if not treated in someway by the community from the start. 2: Though the system may be 110% perfect, people will directly choose to break the system. In this case the system is the in-game chat system, it be perfect IF everyone got along, but they won't so their end lies a problem. Somethings in this world is wrong, it isn't you perhaps, it is the world who might be wrong....

      • The only time I see chat being needed/wanted is if we're on a strike together, or in a multiplayer match on the same team. Otherwise, emotes are more than good enough to convey things. And besides, I spend 75-90% of my time in parties. A lot of people do.

      • TL;DR Griefers and trolls a legit concern... Also believe technologically too difficult for consoles right now... I will critique a little and add my spin on it... I can see where Bungie is coming from with a generalization of CoD players trolling players... Keep in mind people make accounts specially to troll players (XboxBing)... You will still experience people online and can still talk in certain circumstances... This time you actively have to make friends... For some this asks too much. Now for my opinon. I believe that griefers and trolls are a concern... Let me elaborate... I for one like to troll online... But have no need for it in game... It would be annoying for someone to come up and ask to party up (an attempt to be social) and me being forced to say no (if i am not in the mood) and coming off rude. Then they can just follow you around bothering you and killing what you are about to kill. GRANTED they can do all that without chat... the key is with chat you're giving trolls food by more actively expressing your dislike for wanting to team up at that specific time. We all know not to feed trolls. For the second part... I was thinking this before the PAX panel... There is only one map per planet and then the one tower... ALL of Destiny's population will obviously be in these areas... Constantly coming or going.... So imagine playing CoD or (insert X FPS here) with 16 players constantly leaving and entering the lobby... It could get werid... Onto the PAX panel... They described the infrastructure in depth to us...or more so than before. I don't know all the specifics but using their analogy of the mothyard being a bubble... Every little section that has a name is a bubble... Let's say you're talking to someone and they cross that threshold and you aren't close enough to them... They are now in a different bubble...You walk into the one they are in... They are not x distance you were from them as they got matchmade into a different lobby. With people constantly changing and having such a large population the way it is in destiny in the areas... I believe that as of right now it is technologically too difficult... We haven't really had a game on consoles using maps/areas they way they do with continuous matchmaking...

          • basically i can see how prox chat could ruin portions of the open worldliness.. but I also think that there should definitely be areas of localized prox chat.. and or just the option to have it on or off.. we need this communication in the game somehow.. for sure..

            • Look, how can you be so blind? I'm getting so tired of people wanting proximity chat. Think about this for a second. Bungie is building not just a game, but an experience. I played the alpha and beta. This game has so much atmosphere, its amazing. I don't think any of us want to be out exploring some dark ruins or something like hellmouth for instance, and have someone come along playing their music into their mic or in the background. Completely ruins your experience doing that. Seriously, they put a dance button in for a reason. I made over 15 friends just dancing in the tower in the beta. If you wanna talk, get some friends and play the content with them. If you have enough time to complain on a forum, you obviously could be making some friends on here instead of complaining.
