Destiny's story criticism

While I don't agree with the whole article, it raises good points. I know I only got to play the beta, and so some cutscenes may have been omitted, but the pacing of the story so far isn't great. I've been dead for god knows how long, and just escaped a bunch of angry alien pirates, and all that's really explained afterwards is that this tower is a base and that I need to go out again and get a warp drive. The fallen's motivations, humanities history, the guardians and the city are all explained in grimoire or background dialogue, and it all seems rushed and awkward. Another cutscene or so to explain the history of what happened, to actually show some of the citizens of the city, to be introduced by the Vanguard Mentors and told by duty now would help build up atmosphere and the story. Also some explanation for why I am killing the fallen and hive, not just from dinklebot in the background (which is easy to miss if you're dicking around with friends), but from the Mentors (who so far just stand by a table all day), or better, one of the Archons. What do you guys think?

  • it is the Beta not the full game, no 1 should be remotely judging it - we know Alpha's, Beta's & Demo's skip around parts. Not to mention the lore is very very vague so far because the game isn't even out....

    • I love how people automatically dismiss any criticism of the game by saying "it wuz just a beta its not the finul product guis!!" People seem to think that there's going to be some drastic change between the end of the beta and September 9, when that's simply not going to happen. That's little over one month. One month isn't nearly enough time to fix everything that received negative feedback during the beta, let alone rewrite parts of the story and add new cutscenes. Judging a game solely based off of a pre-launch build is never a good idea, but you people need to understand that it's not like the entire game is going to be radically different when it launches.

      • Yeah i hope the beta actually omitted a bunch of cutscenes because of spoilers. After the tutorial mission, the Speaker SHOULD really explain what happened. Preferably with a cutscene oh what humanity's Golden Age to the Collapse.

      • I felt it had a Dark Souls lore thing going on for it. I like the idea that I'm uncovering humanity's past trying to put the pieces together.

        • I think the author is just a bit slow, and used to easily digested stories aimed at young adults. We dont have to have someone hold our hand and explain everything as we go along. Exploring the world and adding to the grimore will be a big part of the fun

          • Maybe it was just me, but I completely understood what my ghost was talking about when he said "The Array is on, controlled by Rasputin, the last Warmind." The story was really not that dry or hard to follow.

          • I hope it's more vague storytelling (lore wise) a la Dark Souls. I like speculating about the past in Souls games, what certain monuments, symbols mean, etc. It really strikes the explorer gene inside all of us. Kinda why I'm disappointed about Destiny's size. Less places to explore means less mystery, less awe, less discovery, etc., etc., etc.

            • So here's the deal: Bungie's storytelling has always sucked. Great story, great lore, poor storytelling. I'm hoping for an improvement in Destiny but we'll see. That's just my opinion of course so feel free to tread on it.

              • Ok well hers my idea. In the beginning when the Ghost finds your body he revives you and says "youre going to see and hear a lot of tings you dont understand but we have to go quick no time to explain" Bungie tells you in the very begging that the story is going to be shroudy he didnt say oh heresbooks of our nations lore no! thats for us guardians to find we have to make that book ourselves (here on the forums xD) we are the scholors and must speak with one and onther guradians to make this bok to make this story complete and THAT my fellow guardians and my idea of the story.

                  • The playable story in the beta reminded me of starting up a movie, getting 15 - 20 minutes in, then taking the disc out and locking it away for a month and a half. So I ask: Would you judge a movie that's an hour and a half by the first 18 (or so) minutes? If you assume that speculation is true, then we played about 20% of the story (6 missions out of 32). I'm not saying that total mission count is accurate or from a reliable source, but my point remains the same - the author is looking at a small selection of introductory missions and expressing their disappointment. I'm not sure if that's fair. I would finish the movie before judging it on plot holes, poor acting, etc. I think it's premature to worry, especially considering we have no firm evidence of campaign length - a lot can be said in the last 80% (estimated) of a story. Also, Bungie did one of two things with the beta - they revealed the first part of the game with the same amount of story as is, or they held something back, so as not to give everything about the early story away. I'd like to think that when I throw Destiny in and start up a character there's something new waiting for me in the way of cut-scenes or some form of exposition from what we experienced in the beta. Will I be disappointed if it's exactly the same? Nope - not unless I finish the story... and it sucks. That said, I'm nervous for the grimoire system.Too much lore in an inconvenient space rubs me the wrong way. I hope it is at least accessible from the menus, and not exclusively from peripherals. I enjoy wiki sites, mobile apps, and extra immersion, but when I play the story I don't want to feel the need to pull out my pocket reference guide to look up terms, names, locations, or events in order to understand what just happened. Don't worry, 9/9/14 will come soon enough and we can find out for ourselves how this story unfolds!

                  • I think that article is a bad example of how Bungie intends to convey Destiny's Plot Device. Paying attention to the things Bungie has talked about throughout their media campaign's history is a better way to understand what's going on. I can understand that there are those who don't want to put time and research into finding out what the game's about. However. If one doesn't want to wait until the game comes out, then they're gonna have to, unfortunately. There was a DeeJ interview that I thought described what exactly we're all supposed to do in Destiny very well. At 9:45-46ish he says,
"Your job... as a Guardian of the last safe city on Earth is to reclaim the Solar System. We have lost colonies out there; Cities on Mars, Academies on Venus, Military Bases on the Moon. They were OURS and we lost them. They are occupied by aliens right now. Hostile, vile, beasts... And we need you to go out there and kick their ass and reclaim that stuff so it belongs to us again. You're going to take our home back."
I think that sums what we're "supposed" to do but not a lot about why. Some people could write about the Traveler coming, the Golden Age, the Darkness coming, the Traveler's sacrifice, Ghosts being created, Guardians being revived, the Battles fought during the collapse and all of that but the game will be out in less than a month. There's gamescom, PAX right before the game's release and maybe other stops for Bungie to go to for reveal opportunities. I think it's more fun to allow each other's character to develop, enabling them to discover mystery and lore which could be a big part of how Bungie wants to tell Destiny's story.

                  • The Last Array felt like the first real chunk of story. Considering the other earlier chapters were tutorial till you learn how to ride your sparrow. Chapter 1: Basic Tutorial. Chapter 2: Let's see if you remembered everything from Chapter 1 add Ghost Environment Interactions and Dark Zones to that list. Chapter 3: Same again and now for the Sparrow And I picked up on Rasputian being a 'warmind' or a planetary wide A.I Hopefully the storytelling is not just restricted to the campaign mode and whatever Story DLC is released later. We will now live in a persistent world and I may not always want to go to Public Events or on Raids every time I log in Mission Direction maybe could be improved slightly in one or two places. I don't think I threw grenades until chapter 3 but I was introduced to the Guardian Skill Tree in chapter 1 and told to apply the skill to the grenades and not told how to use it. I also spent 45 minutes on the moon and got myself lost after the lost Guardian forward camp trying to locate the next waypoint. But I was able to cope and mission direction is a bit different to story and lore. Of course your going to struggle with Destiny's story if you apply Halo 'context' to random words and phrases like ghost and hunter that also occur in destiny and wonder why Destiny does not apply 'Halo context' for these words when telling the Story of Destiny. I mean why was he expecting to play slow moving character with a Fuel Rod Cannon fused to their right arm and a 9 foot shield able to deflect bullets and plasma in the left.

                  • Yeah, I'm not exactly enthralled with what I was shown. Mainly with how my character lacks any apparent free will. I felt less like a part of humanity's last hope and more like a passer-by caught up in a series of bizarre events. The first meeting with the Voice of the Traveler was particularly disheartening. I felt like he was using buzzwords to motivate my guardian into action rather than providing anything substantive. "I'm sure you have a lot of questions. But, instead of you asking them, I'm going to say Darkness in the most ambiguous way imaginable." But, this was also a beta, so hopefully the final product won't be so lackluster.

I think I'll wait for the full release to decide. I cannot stand game sites that criticize a game over a beta when they should know more than most that it's not a final or full version. I think it's horrible reporting. I think you are good for recognizing that it's a beta at least and the possibility of story being omitted.

I don't want clumsy exposition explaining what happened dumped on me in extended cut-scenes at the beginning of a game. I prefer for things to unfold throughout the story filling in the gaps as I go. Which is one of the reasons I love System Shock 2. Christ, look at Indiana Jones, would Raiders Of The Lost Ark have been a better movie if they had spent the first 20 minutes explaining the back story to introduce the character?

                            • I think that this analysis may not be usable, because the game was in beta, but if what we have seen is the real story, I AGREE COMPLETELY. I like the theme and the general outline of the story so far. I do think it could be bolstered with extra scenes to fill blanks and set a better mood. Make us feel like our role as a guardian matters. Show us just how badly humanity was overwhelmed. "Hey, man. You were dead for a while, but you're alive now. Oh, no! Run from the Fallen! Ok, here is the Tower. There are other guardians here. This is the Traveler. It's just kind of hanging out at the moment, and we can only survive under it. Let's go find a ship."
