Kendall Capers found no hope at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church after the death of his husband, Julion Evans, who died at age 42 from amyloidosis. Evans' family are members of the New Hope congregation in Tampa, Florida, and Capers arranged to have the service there.
However, the funeral was abruptly canceled the night before it was scheduled to happen. The family was informed with a phone call from New Hope that said that it would be "blasphemous" to hold the service at the church, reported KCCI.

T.W. Jenkins, the pastor of New Hope, told WFLA over the phone that his church does not believe in gay marriage. "I try not to condemn anyone's lifestyle, but at the same time, I am a man of God and have to stand upon my principles," he said.
Evans' family members were devastated by the news, with his mother too upset to speak to reporters on the phone. "Regardless of our background, our sexual orientation, how can you wait that long and put someone in a bind when they're going through a loss?" said Capers.
Evans' funeral took place instead at the funeral home which handled his wake.

It's not like we woke up and said, 'let's be gay,' someone we were born with and we've dealt with it for me, 40 years, him 42 years, and we make the best possible choices," said Capers to WFLA.
Pretty terrible. You shouldn't be denied the right to celebrate someone's life, period. It's a shame that this is even allowed to happen.

Edited by Amnesia: 8/12/2014 2:40:19 AMSimple minded people. That's all I have to say about that church.
-
Welcome to the real world. It sucks here.
-
-blam!- you let him be buried you a-holes
-
I wonder if the church waited until the night before the funeral to cancel it on purpose.
-
That's -blam!-ed up dude
-
The Truth, it hurts, and burns
-
I understand where the church is coming from, but corpses can't be gay. It just seems cruel to deny a dead person a service because of how they lived. That being said, the same thing has happened to a number of deceased criminals in the past. Its not such a big deal.
-
:O I thought Christians were suppose to be understanding goody two shoes who help people out
-
>Florida >Church It's still disgusting that he even did that. So what if he was gay?
-
It always confused me how some churches turn away "sinners". Jesus' philosophy is that the church should be the one place in the world where everyone, regardless of sin, is welcome and loved. Turning away a grieving family seems remarkably un-Christlike.
-
Regardless of your beliefs, it would have at least been courteous to tell the family way ahead of time that you won't hold the ceremony. Telling them the day before is a huge dick move.
-
That's awful.
-
Do gay ppl have any religions or are they all athiests?
-
Time to hate people for hating!
I'm Christian and I had to Facepalm
I'm Christian and I had to Facepalm

Edited by Coup de Grace: 8/10/2014 2:26:36 PMShould have told them way ahead of the day before, but whatever. I mean, it's not like he's going to go out without a funeral service. Just find a different church. I don't mean to sound like I'm saying that's easy or anything, but I really hope he doesn't act like it's impossible, because then the poor fellow's going without a burial service. Also,
Florida
That priest sounds like a huge fag.

Edited by SolidSnake: 8/9/2014 7:36:09 PMYeah and ? Is it that hard to wrap your head around CHRISTIANS , MUSLIMS AND THE CHURCH DONT LIKE GAYS (although we muslims dont make a big deal out of it) THEY ARE ANTITHESIS' . A GAY BEING BURIED AT THE CHURCH IS LIKE HAVING NATIONAL BIN LADEN DAY IN THE USA It just wont work . Its a dickish move I guess but it was the right one if you ask me . Its like how pastor said ""I try not to condemn anyone's lifestyle, but at the same time, I am a man of God and have to stand upon my principles," Dudes staning upon his principles . Let him be
-
Well that's gay.
-
Getting away with the most ridiculous, stupendous, bigoted, hateful, disgusting, or discriminatory view you can think of is probably the most interesting social aspect of religion there is. That said, the pastor is a -blam!-.
-
That's just plain stupid I respect people who are religious But when stuff like that happens I don't even have words to explain how angry I am Don't disrespect the dead
-
That is just so -blam!-1ng wrong. What kind of church denies a proper funeral for anyone!? Religion are so stupid nowadays.
-
Uh so? Thats the church's right. I'd do the same thing if I was that church.
-
THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NOT SUPPORTING AN ACTION AND SHUTTING PEOPLE OUT FOR SINNING.
