Why does Halo 4 not feel like a Halo game?

I know it sounds weird, but now that Bungie left the Halo game series, it just lost something that made it good. How could 343 screw up this bad with such a great plot?

  • I know this post is old, but to me it was the effects and sound effects. Nothing sounded right and the explosions weren't beautiful. It was a very beautiful game but the explosions were severely lacking. I think making such drastic changes to very well established sounds like the Warthog engine or ghost boost was a step in the wrong direction. Also, there was something about the pacing of the game. It seemed like you ran through it while also spending way too much time in a level. The pacing was strange and the ending was lackluster and spectacular at the same time. I was hoping for a boss battle. What happened to Cortana was also a huge let down imo.

  • Because 343, they tried so hard to be accepted by the community, they just failed. And mainly because Frank O'Conner.

because 343 focused so much on creating an emotional tone for each key point of the narrative that they forgot to create an overall tone for the entire game. from a previous post i made.
... I disagree with the magic comment. 343 does have their own style that I love, but I think what you're referring to is how Bungie managed to create an emotional tone that flowed through their entire games. Whereas 343's work is excellent at creating a tone for a specific moment, Bungie creates one that can be found throughout the entire game. For example, the soundtrack for Halo 4 has some stunning individual tracks (IMO), but when you think about it as a whole, it lacks an overall tone. It sounds like a bunch of tracks just piled on top of each other. Compare Belly of the Beast to Arrival to Green and Blue. They don't really have much in common. Whereas if you take Marty's scores, they generally incorporate a set of instruments that's present throughout the whole game. In CE, it was the synth. In 2/3 it was the choir. In Reach it was the orchestra. In ODST it was the sax/piano. That's what people mean by "Halo feel." It's not that the soundtrack doesn't have that feel- indeed, there is no such thing as a particular Halo feel- it's just that the soundtrack doesn't have a flow that permeates through it. When you think of the soundtrack as a whole you don't think that "That's Halo." You think "Well this one was Halo. And this one. And this one. And this one." until you list off every piece and then you have yourself scratching your head. It's like this for the direction of the entire game. 343 was so caught up in having the player experience the moment that they didn't make the player experience the journey. Of course, this is all my opinion...
• It was by all means different from all previous Halo titles but it still felt like a Halo game

      • It doesn't sound weird trust me, we all get what you're saying but I don't really know the answer to that. Bungie made Halo so they knew what people expecting, 343 is building off it just differently. Halo 4 had too many aspects from cod which caused many people to: 1. Not give it a chance 2. Not like it. Aside from Halo Wars, Halo 4s pop is the fastest decreasing of any Halo game and I still don't know the answer for sure OP, it just doesn't have that Bungie "feel".
