Guys, we've been through this before.

First, a song for you to listen to while you read. Now then. I just realized... Bungie.next... we've been through this before. In fact, we've been through EXACTLY this same scenario before. Allow me to explain. You see, years ago we had some forums that everyone has largely forgotten about. We had a Screenshot Forum, a Custom Maps Forum, a Custom Gametypes Forum, and a Custom Films Forum. In these, you would place your Custom Generated Content from Halo 3. You'd make a thread, put your file in there, and essentially advertise your files. But then disaster struck. The forums were removed and replaced with this... hideous thing. It was some sort of filter system! You saw all content available on your screen. Then you could filter by the type (map, screenshot, film, gametype) and by 'tags' people would put on their files. If you sorted by 'most recent' and 'type,' you could essentially just recreate your forum that was taken! Basically you could have the old if you sorted correctly, but you also had a ton of NEW options available to you to make finding interesting content easier. ... This is EXACTLY what we have now I realized minutes ago. Bungie essentially just did exactly what they did to the Files Forums, and applied it to the entire website. Sure we were like 'WTF' for a while, but eventually we all realized that it was for the best. It was not progress for the sake of progress, but progress for the sake of improvement. This might have been before many of your guys' times if you're an ewer member to the site, but hopefully some veterans will now remember and we can all realize... we made it through once, we'll do it again just fine. Discuss thoughts on the matter.

  • I thought about it for a little while burrito and I realized what is wrong with your analogy between the current site and the file filtering system of the old Bungie.net. They are similar but not the same. Yes the old filter system used tags so that users could identify their file (whether it was a map or screenshot or video) and users would search for the tags that interested them, CTF or BTB or awesome snipe whatever. The difference, and the problem with the current tag and forum system with bungie.next is that there are certain key tags that EVERYONE uses and are in fact OFFICIAL such as Community and offtopic, these official tags were meant to replace the forums that their names are derived from. This is the difference between, and the problem with, the old filter system for files and Bungie.next. Users using the file system would tag their files in the relevant category because that was the best way that they could be found, by tagging them correctly as the map type that others would search for. If they were tagged incorrectly they would be ignored. In Bungie.next because everyone uses tags like community users who want more people to see their off topic threads are tagging them as community because they know other users will be searching for that tag. You might say "But Max, you just answered your own question we have a 'hide' button now." In theory that is a good idea however the problem is so pervasive that almost all threads are tagged as Community whenever someone creates a topic because the user will say "Well I want the community to see it." Not understanding (or intentionally misusing) the tag and what the discussion in that tag is supposed to be about. Which is the main problem with the tagging system, that it is FAR too dependent on the users to police themselves and tag things properly, which over the last couple of days they have shown they are incapable of doing. Achronos in fact said (this is me paraphrasing because I am not proficient enough with the site yet to search for this quote) that this was meant to decrease the workload of the ninjas by allowing them to ignore "offtopic" posts that are filed under the wrong tag (unless i have misinterpreted Achronos' statement which I'm sure someone will correct if I have). That is why I think there should be a combination of the two systems, the old forums and the new tagging system. Where you enter the offtopic forum and tag your tread as the topic that your discussion encompasses and other users can then search within that forum for your tag or just scroll through all of the threads. The same with a Community sub forum where you could tag your community related thread with a more specific tag that has to do with the community, for example #communitycarnage or something along those lines. That is my two cents, take it as you will.
