The Taken King: Value vs Cost issue

So I thought I'd let the dust settle before I commented and read the other various articles around the Web on places such as Planet Destiny and Kotaku. This is from the point of view of an Alpha Destiny player, and invested up to this day. I do care about this game and this post stems mainly from disappointment. So this issues thst revolve around value vs Cost are a few distinct issues. Firstly the various versions on offer. If you consider that most GOTY editions of a game include the Base game and all DLC to THAT POINT, TTK is a slap in the face to players so far because for $20 extra you get the original $85 of content. Instead of paying $60 for the GOTY edition and THEN TTK being acquired separately. Awesome for new players or old returning players who never got the DLC. Shit for us long term players. Secondly, the different versions pricing across the various nations is a massive point of contention. I am a UK resident and NOT happy at all being screwed out of my money. When you factor in the extra digital 'collectors' content that any self respecting Destiny player CRAVES then TTK is a frightening proposition. Possibly looking at £60 for a DLC pack in its entirety when whole games cost less. Finally it's the content itself; can it really justify $40 pricetag when most players probably acquired Destiny for around this price? One or two locations at a push, one raid, 3 subclasses, a handful of PvP modes and maps and strikes and the 'Taken' who are old enemies repurposed. Ultimately apart from the extra subclass, we're basically looking at a big standard DLC pack like TDB with a better story questline. I'm not asking anyone for a boycott or anything silly and I am not suggesting you DONT buy the content, spend your money how you like. However I am trying to stimulate an adult conversation on the controversy in a measured way. Thanks for your time guys!

  • I believe that since TTK just dropped I think there are mistakes in international pricing, my suggestion to any non-US players is to wait a while before considering buying, because I believe your voices will be heard and there's still over two months before TTK releases. There's still time for change, it's only been over a week since the announcement.

    • I'm surpised to see how many players defend the 40€/$ coast, because if the DLC looks good, for now about what we now so far about it, it doesn't worth 40€, specialy if you already brought the game plus the season pass. Bungie should reduce the price to 20€ to make a commercial gesture for their old fans. But if the content realy worth 40€ i will buy it for 40€, the fact is, they say it's a kind of whole new game, but one subclass and one solo campaign is not anough. If there are space battle and some other cool stuff, that would be GREAT ! Please Bungie, do your best ! And not the mininum require to sell it at the maximum price. We all now you are good developers.

            • I'm anticipating the upcoming news and what it has in store. 1 new planet could contain a larger, richer and more vivid story than vanilla and the 2 expansions put together. This is bungie and they can pull it out the bag with aplomb. I want to be throwing money at the screen for all the right reasons. There's so much in their waiting to realise it's potential. I want to find out who shin actually is and which timeline the stranger is actually from. Not a couple of crappy emotes, even though I do want those emotes. I'm looking down the barrel of 40£ expansion + 20£ for all the bells and whistles. That's 60£ or 100$ to those who can actually effect a change. I'm waiting to be amazed. Bang zoom, I'm off to the moon.

            • You misinterpreted what value means. Value is what you believe it is worth. To me $80 is worth Destiny, The House of Wolves, The Dark Below, The Taken King, the new strikes and story missions, the new weapons and cosmetic items, plus the physical content you get. It's a steal. Which is why I put down a preorder. Sure for $60 I could get only what I need. Or for $20 more I could get so much more and give away the content to a less fortune Guardian. Sounds like a win win to me.

              • I have a nasty feeling that the "new" strikes we are going to get will be the old ones we've already been playing but with the Taken twist, mainly due to the interview where it was confirmed that Xbox players would get the PS exclusive strike in both its original and Taken guises come Autumn. What if we don't actually get any real new content, but the "new" stuff is all like that? Would people really be happy?

If you think it's going to be different you're a fuucking retard. They had 2 chances to impress us and failed. The TaKing of Money will be no different. The only thing that maybe impressive is the raid and that's maybe. So wake the fuuck up and get your tongues out of BungHoleVisions aholes

The pricing for the collectors edition and all, seems a bit odd. I believe they generally made a massive mistake and are doing a horrible job at saving face. Value is subjective, the content reported so far seems to be double that of previous DLCs and close to launch Destiny. I'm one of these strange individuals that was comlwlteky fine with Day 1 content, so I'd be hard pressed to find issue with TTK. Personally, the only thing that would throw me off from this game would a micro transaction system and the removal of a few key features for me. My opinion however, I'm an odd gamer. Not really into story, more into arcade style games, that are just fun. I play Destiny like I played Street Fighter or Galaga, a good load of fun, no sentimental attachment, or a need to achieve anything other than blowing shit up. I always thought the UK pricing was based on licencing and distribution laws, but I've noticed a few new release games not that far apart in pricing, so... Not sure what the story is there.

Trying to determine value vs cost across the entire offering is premature at this point - we don't know what the entire offering entails... we can only guess. In the Kotaku interview Luke "Throw Your Money At The Screen" Smith was quoted as saying that the number of activities selectable in the navigator was close to Vanilla Destiny. I'm skeptical, but I also think it's too early to call. That said - I'm totally not buying anything until I have definitive answers from Bungie on things like: - How much content is there, really - Are they going to render all the year 1 items I spent the last several months grinding etheric light for obsolete, effectively invalidating all my effort during the HoW period - Are there other mechanisms that we haven't seen yet in which they attempt to exploit / monetize the playerbase (e.g. Red Bull) Lastly, just as a side note: I'm sort of waiting to see these "emotes". I mean, there's no way I'm going to spend $20 on them, but I'm curious to see if at least one of the classes gets what is essentially recycled dance moves from the Joe Staten presentation at E3 2013. Talk about an opportunity to sit back and watch the fireworks.

                    • Im only getting the $40 digital DL as I place no value on the shaders and such for $20 See I came into Destiny with the expectation of paying for DLC/Xpacs over time I played WoW since Vanilla and understand the price models...every 18 months or so your world is changed in some way(skills...quests...endgame...old stuff gets replaced by new..etc) Yes the ammount of content Blizzard puts out is vastly different(those monthly fees help that, along with 40-60 dollar Xpacs)...but with the new Xpac is not a whole new game...its an addon to what you have..each Xpac dont give you 60 new levels to grind like Vanilla... Years ago Blizzard started giving the base game + Xpacs cheap...no one who walked into WoW during Wrath wanted to pay that full price for the old content and no one ran old stuff anymore(other then achievements) Bungies problem is they are not sure what game they have here...is it a FPS or MMO From what we know from Bungie(not the 40gb TTK size)...Taken King will be bigger then TDB and HoW combined and for that I feel 40 is worth it The only argument I read now that has any merit is the US vs UK pricing...BUT I do not understand 100% how their system works...he may not be the most popular person but..It is foreign to me too I will buy TTK...so far Destiny has provided more then enough hours of gameplay for me to want more... For those that wont buy It...thats fine..its your money...I hope you enjoy what ever game you play as there is tons of good ones out and to be released Guardians make their own fate

And that's in dollars. Here in Europe i payed 70€ for the original game and 20€ for each DLC. So until now I spent 110 euros in Destiny. Now I'll have to wait how much will be the cost of TTK in Europe (currency conversions are always a surprise with game's prices). But even if it's a direct conversion I'll be looking to 40 euros for TTK plus 20 euros for the emotes package which will bring me to 170 euros spent in a game in one year. I'd say that's a lot. Don't know if I'll continue down this road, though. The lack of a structured story is taking is toll. Since beginning I always thought that Bungie would address that part of the game in subsequent expansions but so far I've seen only a shadow of a story in TdB and HoW. I have no reason to think that TTK would be different and if that's the case i think it's way too much money just to collect gear doing months and months of repetitive gameplay.
