Why Destiny is similar to Borderlands 1

Ok guys, I had this crazy thought last night. If you read the header of this post, I'm sure you can guess what it is. Now if you ever played Borderlands, I'm sure a couple of you can see where I'm about to go with this. When the first Borderlands came out, the number one complaint of it was, and still is, the lack of story. The game play though however, was fantastic, the experience was to many unforgettable, and admittedly, the game addicting in often frustrating ways. It was a fun an thrilling game, yet it lacked in many ways. And upon beating said game, you were left with a sense of pride at finishing your journey, or just unfulfillment perhaps. You then had the option to continue the adventure, get better gear, and strive on, or drop it right there, and move on. Destiny is in many ways the same. I'm not gonna lie, the story isn't there, well, it's kind of there, but lets be honest, it's not the story we were expecting. You're a hero of light (Vault Hunter) off to find the darkness (vaults) and shoot things with guns. That's it, that's the story. Story get's a D+ at best, I get it. That's not what I'm defending here. I don't even think I'm trying to defend anything here. Yes, the story sucks in destiny, but the gameplay is amazing, it's slick and enjoyable and comfortable. The experience is grand, but not everyone feels that way. Destiny, like borderlands, is definitely better when you have friends to share it with, or when you can truly shine being a sole start. Also here's the thing, I see complaints all the time about the game, yet here we are all, still playing it. You can't deny the game is fun, it's interesting and amusing, and we all care for it. We want the best for this series, because it gave us adventures and travels that were incredible as is, but could be even more extraordinary with time and care. Bungie could have done better, yes, that's true, they absolutely could have done better, we expected better. But I refuse to look at a game with so much potential and be done with it, especially when I'm still enjoying every second of it. Back to the header, borderlands 1 was just as disappointing in ways, and just as thrilling in others. We then got Borderlands 2, which almost completely fixed all of said problems, and was a grand success, at least by critics and reviews. All because patience....and time, were given on accessing the potential of the game. This is a new IP, a new start, and a completely new series. Hopefully Bungie will learn from the criticism and complaints of Destiny, fix said problems in future releases related to the series, and continue to supports it's strengths. There's promise here guys. We may have not gotten what we expected, it may just be a shell of what it could have been, but there is promise. I want to support this game, and have faith in Bungie. Just because you have a rough start, doesn't mean you should give up right? We're Guardians of Light, If we don't have hope, who will? UPDATE: All of you have very valid points and it was nice getting your feedback. I agree with alot of what you said and I am truly sorry if anyone thought I meant this as a insult to Borderlands. BL1 is actually one of my favorite games of all time. I just think most of us can agree that Borderlands 2 fixed some problems Borderlands 1 had, so here is hope that future additions to the Destiny franchise do the same.

  • If it was borderlands, then it would have lackluster boss fights. Like ridiculously lackluster. Raids would be.... run and shoot. Just saying. Good games, just mindless shootfests.

  • I definitely agree! I have totally thought this as well. First borderlands was good imo, but it was definitely lacking. But second one? Holy crap. They improved on literally every aspect of the game. I'm excited for Destinys future. Still remains to be seen if they can improve upon it though. Although I think there is so much room for growth that they will.

  • Disagree. I couldn't even complete the game. It was that bad. Didn't make it past the first boss. Destiny while lacking in several areas and has made some stupid choices both design and patch wise it was at least playable. But my opinion is biased. I find the borderlands series to be garbage.

  • Destiny is basically BL1 but worse IMO.

  • Borderlands Has some of the best gameplay I've seen. Can't say I even paid attention to the story in the first one, but the abilities and guns and the combos you could make beat your gear and abilities made it incredibly fun. This game is lacking story, and the fun insanity gameplay that borderlands has. However, the shooting mechanics are great. I see a lot of potential in this game and I seriously hope bungie steps it up for the second installment.

  • If I'm understanding this correctly, the biggest comparison between the two is no story and good gameplay? That's super generic and could be said about a lot of games. A few things: Did Borderlands have a huge budget? No. Did Borderlands take itself seriously? No. Did Borderlands make it's story one of it's big selling points? No. Is Borderlands limited to so few exotics and legendaries? No. Did Borderlands charge $35 for two pieces of rather skimpy DLC? No. I don't know. Just a few things that set the two games pretty far apart in my eyes.

  • The main complaint isn't the story it's the lack of overall content. When a supposed rpg has the story length of CoD, and little end game content that doesn't differ in anyway, with the exception of the raids, something is wrong. Borderlands as way more weapons and are more creative. Borderlands in a way is very similar to Destiny, but Gearbox gave zero fücks when making Borderlands when it came to content. You have to remember Gearbox release three Borderlands in the time it took Bungie to make Destiny. And Gearbox did it better.

    • That is an insult to my very favorite game and I won't stand for it. Had Gearbox teamed with Bungie this game would be the pinnacle of gaming.

    • Borderlands 2 had as bad drop rates, but you could farm bosses with no lockout to find what you were looking for.

    • Destiny is also lacking in loot and exploration categories. Borderlands definitely wasn't

Borderlands is one of my favorite all-time games. In a lot of ways, I prefer it over Borderlands 2. Destiny has been very entertaining, though more repetitive in content. They have similarly logged many hours of my gameplay. Both have a lot of useless loot to sell or dismantle. Though Borderlands had more variety of loot and the ability to share or trade guns. Interesting points though. I think we all hope Destiny is the starting point for a deeper and richer experience down the road.

    • I see you have a lot of valid points and in the most part I agree, but when people keep saying this game has potential, I paid for game that was advertised by bungie for being the next big thing, the complete FPS MMO, I didn't pay for potential that were I believe a lot of this frustration comes from. But hey I paid and I will stick it out because for the best part I do enjoy playing with new people and friends.

      • NO. NO. -blam!- YOU Don't you DARE compare this piece of crap to Borderlands!! Borderlands is a fantastic game that is fun to play with friends, and has way more content. the DLCs offered WAY more extras for 1/3 of the price of Destiny's "expansions", which should have been on the disk anyway. the loot system was far better, the characters were more entertaining, there was genuine humour in the dialogue. the economy was far simpler, and you were never limited or LOCKED OUT of existing content at ANY point. the weapons are far more entertaining; I will never forget my first kill with my Maliwan Volcano. I had incredible times playing the first Borderlands, and I flipped my shit when Borderlands 2 was revealed. and 2 is my favourite FPS of this generation. PLUS it's coming to PS4 with the Handsome Collection, so even when I upgrade, I can still get my hands on it! AND all of the DLC for that AND the pre sequel is included! THAT is how you sell a game. Borderlands shits all over Destiny any day of the week.

Btw another key difference is that Destiny was actually really REALLY good a year before it launched but they decided to spend that last year cutting out content because ironically it was more profitable to release a shit game then a good one. Activision purposely screwed it's customers because they don't care about destiny. They only care about our money and Destiny is nothing more then a disposable means to that end. While 2k does want to make money with Borderlands, Borderlands is more to them then just a disposable means to get our money. 2k Allowed Borderlands to be great because although they definitely care about money they also care about The Borderlands Franchise.

        • The key difference here tho is Gearbox made it very clear what we were buying before we bought borderlands. They advertised a set game and then they launched Borderlands exactly as they had advertised it. Bungie on the other hand advertised a completely different game then the Destiny that launched. Even more ironically the main focal point of there advertising was the story. They purposely made it sound like the story was one of the greatest ever. This was there main marketing point. They also advertised countless other things that weren't in or weren't true to the game they launched. Gearbox knew the story for Borderlands 1 was crap and they never lied otherwise about it. If you look at there trailers you can see the word story isn't even used once. The difference here is people got what they payed for with Borderlands. Most who bought Destiny payed for the game that was advertised and not the game that launched. I'm one of them. I flushed 90 dollars on the Digital Collectors Edition and i haven't logged on since the day the Dark Below dropped and i will not be bothering to log on for the House Of Wolves.

If bungie can learn from what is wrong with this game while keeping what is right about it like the borderlands series which I also love then il be a happy camper.

            • BL1 had no story from the beginning. Pitchfork said as much on the forums. The series is a grand mashup of fps and role playing and gun porn. They patched together a story for BL2 and massively improved the game over BL 1. Destiny was billed as having a grand vision and did not deliver. Destiny with the exception of very shiny visuals and gun play, is missing everything else or provides features achingly backwards. I frankly don't see the potential, because they have so badly undershot the basics. They are still pushing out icons for gear that should have been in FCS. By the time Bungie catches up, the rest of the gaming world will be two more years further along.

              • I'd agree with the aspect of gameplay coming out in a familiar type of comparison. Borderlands 1 story might as well be the Harry Potter series compared to the leaflet of Destiny though just in terms of story. There's just soooo little that it's incredible I haven't quit just out of principle. Hell, TK Baha had more story and depth than Destiny. If there was more character development or even just one that you could actually care about, Destiny would have its story saved. Only reason I continue to play? Stellar gameplay. It's fantastic and I'll keep at it, but I desperately want more story as do loads of other players.
