Reaching out for some honest talk

This is not an attempt to be a dick. I'm not trying to start a war. I loved this game at first. The beta was great. The first 50 hours or so were fun. As time goes on, I find myself slowly getting eaten away at by the flaws. I'm struggling to keep playing and the thing is I want to like this game and enjoy it still. I'm having a hard time doing that though. Every day I login and do a few of the same bounties that I did last week, play a few missions I have beaten a few times already, and ignore the PVP because I hate it with every fiber of my being. I am used to balanced gameplay. I'm not calling out any one class or one super or one weapon. It's simply not balanced. I guess, when I get right down to it, I'm starting to wonder if the hype got the best of me. In the beta, I started to have these little doubts. I squashed them down though because BUNGIE FTW and HALO RULEZ YO. Everyone said "no worries, it's just the beta". In the full game, my fears proved to be quite founded. I want to love this game the same way you guys do, but I just don't. I have friends that love it too and I don't even want to play with them for fear of ruining their experience with my passive aggressive discontent. How do I love this game? I want to, but everywhere I look, I see nothing but closed doors, blocked off sections of maps, and wasted potential. I see missing features that should've been there and "rich, cinematic storytelling" that doesn't exist coupled with a slow loading UI for lore cards that should've been in the game itself. I see endlessly repeated quests that offer no individual flavor to them. I see a PVP that makes no attempt at fair, balanced gameplay. I see loot rewards that don't seem to go the player that deserves them. Worst of all, I see all the marketing and advertised "stuff" that it isn't in the full game and all of this is stuck in my mind while I play. I used to be able to just overlook it and enjoy the combat, but even that isn't possible anymore. Should I just trade it in or what? Is it even possible to get back to basics and just like it for what it is? EDIT: After some encouraging and friendly feedback, the prevailing opinion is to simply take a break from the game and I think that's exactly what I'm going to do. Thanks everyone.

The only thing that is keeping me in this game, is that i have not yet done any heroics or raids. The pvp is what i also enjoy. If i do get bored, i will leave this game to collect dust and maybe, maybe come back after 2 years later and see whats new, what activision decides to drop for consumers. But before that, id check on youtube before i spend my money because there will be more games available.

    • I think everyone expected this game to be perfect right at launch. Given Bungie's reputation and that crazy marketing, that's understandable. And Destiny IS awesome. It's got problems like every other game... They're just more pronounced here because everything is so intertwined. I'd agree with taking a break; Destiny is good now, but it'll only get better.

      • I get where you're coming from. Do you have experience in MMO'S or are you a shooter kind of guy? The problems you're having are pretty common with new MMOs. Not a lot of content, recycled content, having a hard time getting over the loot hump. The only thing i can say is if you're willing to adopt an MMO mentality of patience and endurance, it really pays off. MMOs get really good when additional content gets put out. The expansions will really make this game into something special. I think the biggest reason this game is not liked is that it is an MMO but partially directed to a shooter audience. These two types of gamers have never had to come together before this game. There will be growing pains but i think it'll be worth it. short answer: play it like an MMO that doesn't have crappy controls and actually is fun to play :)

          • We've seen a million of these posts. No one cares. Do what you gotta do and move on, take a break, or keep grinding. Why do you people feel the need to tell us your feelings. When will we see posts that actually pertain to information in the game. Things like figuring out game mechanics, strategies, and guides; not a million posts of people saying the game isn't what they thought, it sucks, or Bungie failed.

            • The problem is that you're spending too long reading most of the stuff on here and not enough time enjoying the game itself. 95% of the people who complain want you to be miserable and not enjoy the game because THEY don't enjoy the game. You see nothing but closed doors. I see an open sandbox. Instead of thinking in terms of "Same shit, different day." The beauty of Destiny is that nothing ever happen's twice if you don't want it to. Sure, It's the same missions but could you approach the firefight in a new way and change up how you engage the enemy spawn entirely? What would happen if you took out the Shielded elite first instead of clearing the mooks out of the way before dueling him? If you play CQB, try long gunning instead. If you play at range, try getting more into the fray. Try focusing more on Ghost and what he's saying to learn the details of the story rather then your enemies. You'd be surprised what you learn. Keep a journal about what you did in Destiny today. Do something different tomorrow. Don't rely on RNG. You don't need to rush to gear in "The best". I do just fine in my blues. The raid content will be there when I get there. There's no hurry. I can take my time in buying legendary gear. Or I can focus on grinding toward purchasing it rather then relying on RNG to get me those items. Somehow handpicking your gear feels good too. PvP is, at it's very core, unfair. You're not going against a computer who is nice and predicable. You're going against living breathing, thinking, sentient (however questionably intelligent) beings. They will not play nice. They will not play fair. They will use every dirty trick in the book they can to win a match. This is not a Gentleman's duel. This is not fencing until first blood. This is not pistols at ten paces, turn, and fire. This is merciless murder. Pure and simple. Don't get angry. Get even. Revenge is not only allowed but encouraged. Don't rely on Marketing to tell you how to have fun the game. Go box with Vex Minotaurs. Go race your friends across Mars on Sparrows. Go on a Cabal melee killing spree and see how many melee kills you can rack up before you die. Practice grenade throws against the Hive on Earth. Have a trick shot contest with your friends on the Moon. Kick the purple ball around on the Tower. If you take a break from anything. Take a break from the forums. Don't let negative posts make you miserable. That's what they want. Play the game. Have some adventures. Then come back here and tell us about them.

              • Trade the game in now while you can still get some $ for it and put it towards something else. It wont be worth $h!t for trade in value in a month because everyone else will have done the same and the bargain bin will be overflowing with used copies of Destiny XB1 and PS4.

                • Honestly as much as people say take a break, that just shows how much the game was a let down. I played the hell out of the beta, but that was under the assumption that they were adding more stuff, that there would be more variety, that the story would be fixed from what it was and expanded on. None of that really happened at all. Also for those who reply don't give me bullshit about grimoire please. I am talking about the game i paid for and what was IN that game, not something i read on an app or website. Now to my point...people will say "Your own fault for binge playing" and i won't say that...because as a gamer i know that when you get a game you are excited for, that is fun, you want to play the shit out of it...but the longer you play it the more you realize this game might not have been all you thought it was. And this sets the masterpieces from the regular games. Battlefield 2, Starcraft, Warcraft 3, these games as examples you could play them for hundreds of hours....and still not get bored...but as time goes on the quality of games plummets as gamers get more content with what is released and start to just be happy with SOMETHING being released. You don't need to be entitled, you should just not settle for a game... Now this may seem like i'm shitting all over destiny...and i'm not. Destiny has AMAZING gameplay...this alone kept me playing the beta for days, i skipped i don't know how many priorities just to play strikes and pvp...but that's all it has...gameplay. And don't get me wrong that isn't a bad thing, but it is still missing so many aspects that will keep people playing for years to come. Don't give me this "but 10 years" -blam!- that, i've played games for 10 years that didn't need to rely on DLC and weekly addons that you couldn't play immediately. tl;dr? Most people are starting to realize Destiny was not all it was cracked up to be. With great gameplay...that's really all it has going for it, sooner or later people will drop it for something fresh. And let's be honest the only reason people ever really have CoD is because of the 5 minute matches and the split screen...cause you can play with your friends. I hated CoD but it was fun to play with friends (same with Halo). Doesn't mean CoD is good...just means that it has features that keeps it playable and that's what destiny needs...

                    • I felt the same way as you, and I also took a break for a couple of days and shortened my play sessions. After that, I found the game to be much more enjoyable than before. So you should just take a break for a bit. Also, playing this game while you're tired is a horrible decision. I did today, and I was 10x bored than I have ever been for some reason.

The only insight I can give you is my story on it. Back when I first heard about Destiny and saw the concept art, I was thinking "Whoa.. Bungie, you are truly a creative force like no other." What were those minds at Bungie cooking up? Then the gameplay reveal came out. I saw it and was amazed. The Warlock dropped out of his ship, as the scene faded in to first person, those cinematic chords were still playing while you were in awe gazing at the vista. The true Bungie touch, mixing visuals and sound to really hit your sweet spots. His friend dropped in, waved, and you think, "Huh, clever! New game, new style, new personality, looking good!" It was a little comedic, but that didn't take away from the gunplay. Skip to Devil Walker Scene We have here showcased a Public Event that put you under the impression that these events had impacts on the environment and were important to the game. The tower in the back fell, a huge ship came overhead with a fleet; an assault! They rushed in to fight. Soon, Guardians from all angles took up arms, protecting their home. What we saw was a new approach to the first-person-shooter experience, and it was fantastic. My Pre-Launch Impression As I said, the Public Events, to me, seemed like they were going to be important- where the game would truly happen and develope. I believe Bungie had said that their world would breathe and evolve over time. What I took that to meaning is that these events would take place and forever change the game, and if you weren't there to experience it yourself, you would hear the stories of those who saw it, who witnessed, who fought it, who ran. Those who fought would have something to show for it. "You see this armor? This was crafted from the skull of a Fallen Archon who lead the assault on the Cosmodrome." These events wouldn't have names, but the community would give them names. Not only that, but there would be talk in the community of a special seed, a Guardian who stood out, one who truly became Legend in these fights. One who created the waves for all Guardians to follow. Under [The Legend's] presence, you know you are assured victory. A breathing, developing world based on events, story telling by the community, and legends. What a world to experience. Bungie; true masters of the arts. My Post-Launch Experience Absolutely not the game I expected. Not living, not breathing, not social, not this, that, broken, disappointing for all the same reasons everyone says. Will it ever be what I hoped? Probably not, the formula is already written here. Story, Strikes, Bounties, Raids, and Fetch-Quests. Those things are there because that was their intention. A mission based game. However, what illudes me is why Bungie showcased the open world, cinematic, event style gameplay and not Strikes, or Raids? I'm not one to go pointing fingers, but the ViDocs, the Gameplay Reveal, and what Bungie has to show for it just doesn't add up. I may be totally wrong, but remember when they pushed the release date back? Why? I feel as though Activision said "No, you rework this game and set it up to be sold in chunks or we won't publish it." So they did, and now we have a game lacking content, missing things, screwed up loot systems, and is overall disappointing. Does that sound like Bungie? No, it doesn't. In some pre-launch videos, you can see that there is a full cinematic experience happening, conversations, character, conflict.. However these things seemed to be ripped out. Bungie does not deliver a story like what Destiny has, nor a lacking experience as it has. So, I feel as though they were forced by direction of Activision of fear of not publishing it, to rework it and rushed to get it ready in those months it was pushed back. They were probably even reworking it prior to then. In conclusion, I am upset, but I still find the game entertaining to a degree. Giving myself a challenge with harder level Strikes is fun to me. It gives me something to overcome, and now Queen's Wrath is out. Yes, it is missions we have already played, but you can get good materials to upgrade your gear and go to the next difficulty. I like to push myself to overcome the higher threats, and that is where my entertainment comes from. If you forget what Bungie said what this was going to be and look at it for what it is, you could see it is a mediocre, fun-to-play title that you can go back to and progress yourself in. The mechanics don't work correctly because it was seemingly cut into pieces, and thrown together salad-style. I bet Bungie had greater plans for Destiny, but coporate derective said otherwise.

                      • My problem with the game is that I feel like they promised so many things and I hyped myself up so when those things weren't in the finished version I just kind of deflated. In my minds eye I thought of a good 40 hour storyline full of cinematics and an awesome story full of rich characters that make you really love the game. As for the guns I was thinking that each one was incredibly different in look and feel with their own skill trees that make each gun their own instead of the same gun with a different colour and 1-2 of the same 6 upgrades. Then you have the finished version which is just the same guns, very few missions which are all the exact same, and a few pvp modes that is unbalanced (mainly the lvl difference than the classes). I would do what you said with your edit and what I might do as well sooner or later. Just take a break maybe come back on the weekends for xur and check things out.

                      • I just really enjoy the co-op. But no boss loot is getting kinda old. The PvP isn't horrible (haven't played it too much) But I feel like the PvP is forgettable. I was expecting some deep storytelling but the OP is saying I have to wait ten years for it. The best thing about this game is all the gamers I've add from the forums. And everyone is pretty chill.

                                  • I think we were all expecting a revolutionary title from bungie here, although the 10 year plan may have a lot to offer however, regardless I feel we were all completely duped into thinking how vast and interesting this world's lore and storytelling was supposed to be and are missing that feeling of 'becoming legend' that was so aggressively advertised for this title. Hopefully with this new DLC coming that the Queen's Wrath seems to be setting us all up for is going to bring some of what we were initially hoping for in this game into focus and Bungie uses there god damn writing team this time I mean -blam!-ing christ - Speaker Voice: 'there is much i could tell you.. but -blam!- you buy dlc'
