Destiny is bigger than you think

Here's what i know. Destiny is Huge. it really is. you think there is no story but there is. its in the grimoire cards and in gear/weapon descriptions. What story there is to Destiny is the foundation to later expansions to the game. this is not Call of Duty where you can beat it in 6 hours and go straight to the multiplayer, or skip the campaign and play only multiplayer anyway. In fact, Destiny is NOT any of those games everyone keeps comparing it to. its not COD, its not Borderlands, its not Mass Effect whatever. Its Destiny. Since a lot of players don't like to find things out themselves but rather be told to or have their hands held throughout the game, thats probably why its been badly criticized. Now on the levels leading to the base level cap which is 20, levels 1-20 is your training to become a Guardian. before then, Guardian is just a title until you finally become one. which takes a lot of effort and learning about yourself and what you can do. yes, getting gear after lvl 20 is very important, as you can tell you need it to do higher level strikes and raids, but have you ever stopped to read your gears description? It has a lot of important details. Lore and non-lore related. The non-lore descriptions have to do with You the player. Stop and look around in the areas. nobody has been on mars or venus, the moon (for decades) enjoy the terraformed scenery. you may find something that could tell you what happened during the Golden Age or what happened during the Collapse. Now im sure a lot of you will give me shit about all this because a lot of players are ignorant to the games they play. Bungie did not work on this game for 10+ years to give you this. they have more in store for us. If any Bungie employee reads this, thank you!

The grimoire doesn't have the game story, it has a few descriptions, curiosities, like every single other sci-fi game has except this one is not even in the game. The grimoire is like an encyclopedia. An encyclopedia is very different from a novel, I hear... The actual game plot: "You're alive even though you were death, you must have so many questions, we will not answer a single one, not even try or start, so let's do stuff. Why? Because "darkness". Warmind Rasputin. What did you say? Nevermind. Let's go to the moon. Oh someone called us from Venus, that's neat, that call must have been expensive, let's go there. Finally someone will tell me something...ah ah just kidding. Darkness. Mars, during the collapse vex pretty much turned it into a machine. What? Nevermind that. Let's go to the black garden. Why? Because a stranger told us. Oh look a big blob surrounded by vex. What is it? What is it doing? Why is it doing it? How is it doing it? Does it matter? Shooting the robots will undoubtedly solve everything that is wrong with out high tech mini moon that seems to be sick for some reason. (Personally I think it needs a hug and a night light to be less afraid of the dark) Literally the moment we destroy the blob by killing its guards and worshipers (for some reason that works): oh look our mini moon seems to be better already, everyone seems to have noticed and the speaker that doesn't say anything useful is already calling us back to hear a speech that also doesn't say anything. The stranger robot that for some reason has boobs: "you and I know the truth, the darkness it still out there" Well it better be because so far this game really needs a plot to go with the setting and universe (that actually sounds really interesting and full of potential). The end. For the actual game stay tuned for the expansions. This is not a plot it's just a series of unfortunate events lol Want more of the game you got? here play the same missions on higher difficulty (like you couldn't do that already) and a few "queen bounties" and differently coloured weapons. Everyone: hey "free content", for the half game we bought to keep us busy until enough time passes that they can start selling us expansions that tell any actual story. I don't hate destiny 1.0, I love destiny despite its many many flaws and see the potential.
its in the grimoire cards
This is a gif of Natalie Portman. Why did I post a gif of Natalie Portman? Well I'll tell you. I posted a gif of Natalie Portman to lighten the insult of what I'm about to say, and to tell you that it's nothing personal. Okay, ready? Maybe take one last gaze into her eyes. Alright, time to man up and earn that gif.
Fuck anybody that thinks grimoire cards are any semblance of a good way to explain the overwhelming majority of the plot. Fun little tidbits of side story? Definitely. The primary means of learning the plot? Fuck off. Just go. That includes you, Bungie writers. Grimoire cards are bad and you should feel bad. Grimoire cards are either a result of incompetence, laziness, Activision being Activision, or a combination of all 3. The first piano note in the Halo 3 E3 trailer conveyed more depth and emotion than the entirety of Destiny. Stop using it as an excuse, because you suck. I mean, you're probably a nice person and all, but in this situation you suck. You suck so much.
Deep breaths. It's okay. Natalie's here for you.

        • my point being is that you are suppose to dive deep into the game. question why things are the way the are. find the answers for yourself. sure this will take a lot of time. i doubt more than half of you would even bother because "its just a game" its something more that just a game.

        • Oh this Destiny could very well have a huge story and it seems that it would if you go and look at the grimoire cards(which i recommend those of you who haven't and are interested in the lore do because it has some extremely interesting stories in itself) but the point is that its not in the game and when it really should be. Bungie literally has all this material already written, reading the cards shows that thought was put into this universe but they implemented little to nothing of it into the game. I feel like this should be more of an outrage because it does feel like things were left out for the sheer idea of selling in expansions. The gameplay is solid, I love it, I don't care if I have to grind when I am having fun shooting these aliens left and right fighting for my life and the added replay-ability from being able to do missions at higher levels is fun also. The art is good, the music is fantastic, and they even have the premise for interesting worlds and plots but not much was done with it in the core game. Why??? I have no explanation other than conspiracy theories that we have all heard spouted out plenty of times. I feel like some people should take a stand and show Bungie that they didn't hit quite hit all the points.

        •
Destiny is Huge. it really is
It really isn't.
you think there is no story but there is.
Nobody is saying there isn't a story in the game. There is. It's just complete shit.
its in the grimoire cards
And right there is a major problem of it. Locking away crucial info on races, characters, weapons, etc. on ANOTHER platform is nothing short of idiotic. Players who don't visit Bungie aren't going to know about many things the Grimoire cards tell. We pay money for a complete experience, not a story that is told elsewhere.
What story there is to Destiny is the foundation to later expansions to the game.
See this? This is -blam!-ing stupid. I don't shell out $80 for a half assed, half complete story, ONLY to pay MORE money for story that should have already been included. If the story told in Destiny is a "foundation", then it's build out of -blam!-ing sand. It's a horrible precedent and practice Bungie is setting here.
this is not Call of Duty where you can beat it in 6 hours and go straight to the multiplayer, or skip the campaign and play only multiplayer anyway
Except, you pretty much can do both of those. The campaign is so linear and short, beating it 6 hours isn't impossible. You only need level 5 to play multiplayer, and I reached that before even finishing Earth.
Since a lot of players don't like to find things out themselves but rather be told to or have their hands held throughout the game, thats probably why its been badly criticized
Right, people criticizing the game on ACTUAL faults are wrong. They just need their hand held, and don't understand the true scope of Destiny.
Stop and look around in the areas. nobody has been on mars or venus, the moon (for decades) enjoy the terraformed scenery. you may find something that could tell you what happened during the Golden Age or what happened during the Collapse.
In all my time playing Destiny, I haven't seen a single piece of scenery that gives me backstory on what has happenend in the universe Bungie created. Beautiful skyboxes, for sure. But a volcano spitting out blue lava doesn't really tell me jack shit about why the Vex are sitting with their thumbs up their asses not taking over the solar system.
Bungie did not work on this game for 10+ years to give you this
If Bungie really spent over 10 years making Destiny, then they -blam!-ed up horribly somewhere along the road. 10 years to make this game? Christ almighty.

            • I agree that I love how they hid the story deep into the game, but I also agree that the story should be told to some extent when you play the STORY missions. The game is fantastic, amazing fun, and brilliant, but I do agree with the negative feedback about the lack of explaining anything about the world you are in. We are told nothing, yet we are expected to just go fight the darkness. The game rewards the players who dive deep into the grimoire and search for dead ghosts to find every little bit of info behind the game. Reward the dedicated, shun the casual player. Many are upset by this, yet it works for the people who love this game.

              • Christ, when will people learn that there's a difference between story and lore. Lore is information, story has a plot line. Saying the story is good because there's substantial lore is like saying The Phantom Menace was amazing because the Star Wars wiki is super extensive. When people say Destiny's story sucked, they mean the actual narrative. It doesn't have any context WHILE you play it.

                  • Exploration for loot, drops or whatever is one thing but I am not going to look and search for the story myself. They should have given us a different set up of the story. I mean if they made an epic prologue when you first visit the speaker could help a lot. I know very little more now than I did after the Beta, they did very little explaining. Grimoire cards are a little extra bonus, not a story. I love this game even with the lack of a good story. And maybe we will look at it totally different in a few years, when it's more complete with DLC or a sequel or something.

                  • Your moms bigger than you think. On a serious note i'm sick and tired of the same old "You just don't understand," what i understand is i was sold a half complete game, with the other 25% coming in DLC months and months away, and the rest of the 25% split between these weekly -blam!-ing content releases and whatever the -blam!- else. Game at this moment isn't even worth 20$. 70$ maybe in 2 years...maybe.

                      • I understand the game is ongoing, so there's probably not going to be much closure to the plot. I understand the concept behind an mmo-style, shared world shooter. I'm fine with that. Grimoire cards are well written, and interesting. The inclusion of stats, ranks, & bonuses with some of them is a plus. Gives me something to do when I'm away from my console (at lunch, taking a poo, etc). I'm fine with that, too. But I don't feel that we should be defending the game's story, even if it does exist in some form. Earning reputation & rewards, is the focus. Playing online with other people, is the focus. If you get bored with that, well, come back next week for the next event.

They haven't even opened up all the areas of the maps, they have us ONE raid so far, a few strikes (there will be more), in sure there will be more planets as well (mercury obviously), and other things like areas and activities In the tower. People who complain about how small destiny is, are ignorant and just want everything handed to them. Guaranteed they haven't even beaten the raid yet.

You're brainwashed dude. I pay to play video games because I like shiny things and flashes of light and shooting things. I'm not playing Destiny to read about a story. If I wanted to do that, I'd go buy a science fiction novel, it sure as heck would be cheaper and have better replay value. The fact of the matter is and this has been the case since the beginning of video game history is that the entire story should be a part of the main game and all the little extra details and in-depth lore should be an add on. I shouldn't have to spend 10 minutes reading about a particular weapon to understand why it's awesome and exotic. Grimoire cards are a supplement, not a story.

                        • 1. You can't count written lore that's not contained in the game as part of "the game". It is supplemental information and not "part" of the game that we bought. Having amazing written lore on some site does not excuse the piss-poor way they explained things in-game. You seem to be thinking Destiny is some kind of brand new genre of game and that it is immune to criticism because of it. Destiny's story sucked, it did and it was disappointing given the fact we all bought it on Bungie's past success alone and expected a cohesive story on par with their other games and all the hype they built up for Destiny. 2. Getting to level 20 is the best part of this game, you consistently find okay gear and you get to play through the "story" as you go. It was pretty fun while it lasted, after 20 the game sure did turn into something else as Bungie said it would. It turned into a lackluster grind-fest where all there is left to do is play the same boring missions again and again for a chance to get better gear so you can continue to rank up or exploit the game to get your gear a little faster. 3. The player shouldn't have to search for the story in a AAA rated title like this, yeah everyone says "Oh you want it handed to you?" around here but that's bullshit, everyone deserves some upfront story elements that are enjoyable to view/read/play. Hidden stuff is great but you can't expect people to rely on that to get the majority of the plot. That's just damned lazy. The story in Destiny sucked, plain and simple. The grimoire cards are neat, the lore is cool, the universe is interesting but Bungie dropped the ball and the presentation of the story was flat and stale. No degree of sugar coating is going to make people think otherwise.
