You are doing yourself a disservice by saying "It's O.K."

I see people say, "It's fine that they are going to release content in a few months because it's an 'mmo' and this is standard in this type of game." And to that I say that it's true - they do tend to do that. However, while it's standard for the course to release content after the game or expansion has been released, it is Not OK to have the company charge you for that content that gets released so soon after the games release. Normally when mmos add content, the first few updates by adding new dungeons and pvp maps are Free and it's the substantial expansion packs that cost the extra cash. So don't go around saying it's alright for them to release the expansions for $40 to add the content that should have been released in the game or added for free because all you do is support a new model that says it's perfectly fine for them to make us have to pay extra an extreme amount of cash for a finished product.

  • You might also find that it's an utterly baseless excuse, given that most MMOs launch with significantly more story in the base game. WoW is basically the industry gold-standard and even ten years ago on launch, it had literally months worth of stories to explore while you levelled before you hit any kind of grind. (Or rather, hiding the grind by giving you motivation beyond 'better gear and levels'. It may just be smoke and mirrors, but it's important.)

Any dlc that's announced before the game is even released makes me feel like bungie just cut shit from the main game just to make an extra buck off of me later.

      • Agreed. That seems to be the general consensus as to what's happened. It explains the lack of content, missing planets, and the general "intro" feel of the whole game at this stage. Yes, I get that more content is coming, but a game at launch should feel like a complete game, and regardless of what "other" gaming companies do with mmo's, I expected better from Bungie.

      • I agree with author. Many things are hidden on the disc we already paid for, so why should I pay almost the same amount for a "so-called" expansion, when it's already been purchased. With that said I think the price is reasonable, IF and only IF, the expansion has 4 new worlds/missions/maps etc. basically the same amount of content we have now. Especially as it's becoming rather déjà vu-ey/ repetitive

      • I wish they would have released it all at once and just charged like $99 for the game. But I am trying to be patient...lol.

      • People really need to stop whining about this stuff. Considering that a video game today costs about $10 more than it did in the days of NES and Master System, compared to the fact that video game budgets rival movie budgets these days, you're getting your games comparatively cheaper than you did back then. You don't want to pay the extra money, don't, but shut up, because everyone else is tired of hearing it. /rant

      • How many games like this are completely different 6 months down the road? How many times have people looked silly for crapping all over a game in the first week or two to then look ridiculous a month or two later. I'm over ten hours into Destiny and I'm level 8. I take my time with games and think it's silly that the lot of you have rushed through the game and are now complaining that there's nothing to do. Right now Bungie is working on connection issues so everyone can enjoy the game. We have no idea what content is coming outside of the Expansion Pass and that's just two dlc's which very well could be substantial expansions given their price. EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT! There's bound to be free updated content and this game is not just a yearly release. You guys need to go play something else or just trade this game in if you are that frustrated. Gamestop is offering close to $40 for it right now so given the amount of time you've put in you can easily get you're money back from the game.

        • Blizzard charges me $15/mo just to play, then they charge me $60+ a year to buy new content. I blame Sony for making us pay for multiplayer access, Bungie's prices aren't bad IMHO.

        • I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was Activision forced bungie to do it. I mean look at their CoD dlc track record. Game comes out, then they charge $15-20 a pop for any "extra" dlc. Which usually ends up being a couple of maps and that's it. And it's not like it's just Activision doing it, EA is also terrible about it. That being said, I do enjoy dlc and think it has value, just that we as consumers are overcharged for it. But until everyone bands together and boycotts expensive dlc that it's worth it, it won't change.

        • I can't make any blanket statements. DLC has always been a thorn for me. But it's gotten better and better. This is one of the first games where DLC has felt fleshed out rather than as an after thought attachment. In the end Id rather not generalize about DLC. I've been dreaming of a shooter that continuously releases new content and challenges for multiplayer coop for upwards of a decade. It's been a gaming fantasy of mine for a really long time, and this is one of the first games that actually seems to have this model in mind. The fact that it is built on DLC doesn't surprise me. Overall I don't have any set expectations. The cost, value, hours, and entertainment you get from games varies wildly. Destiny is easily the best purchase I've made for my ps4 to date.

        • Exactly this. Ive been paying guildwars 1 & 2 since launch and got tons of free endgame content and only had to pay extra for new campaigns expansions which also added new class. And before anyone bitchs about the comparison both are heavily instanced mmo type games with random loot (much farming rep and mats)

        • I have been saying this for years about DLC. It is finally happening now. Companies are releasing half the game at full price of $60, THEN charging you ANOTHER $60+ for content that should been in the damn game to begin with. Its ridiculous and deceptive marketing to consumers.

              • Normally MMO's charge a monthly subscription fee too, or block major content like leveling up unless a fee is paid ("free to play" model), so I'm ok with a slight cost for less than a full expansion every now and then.

                • For real, the game already cost $60 to add another $40 so soon is ridiculous, especially for those of us who don't have money to blow on video games, I had to preorder and pay it off slowly, I have bills that come before entertainment, plus $40 for 2 planets and maye a couple new maps is an outrageous price, even cod wouldn't charge that much it was $15 for approx 5 new maps and maybe a gun or some call cards

                  • This game is great I cant put it down. Way better than anything I have played in a long time and its just getting started. And to top it off the expansion pass is the cheapest I have seen for any game recently. I honestly don't get the haters out there. How can you put more time into a game in one week than any other and then rubbish it because you finished it so soon.

                    • Personally? I'm fine with this. Games can't deviate from the set price standard, so the more expensive video games get (and you may not believe it, but for as much criticism this game got it was still hella expensive), the more limited they become. Also, we all know inflation has been on the rise for many years as well, allowing prices that can and are known for varying, like the cost of creating video games to fluctuate up while the selling price stays the same. I may be the only one here to think this, but I'd rather pay more for a higher quality game than have game designers limit themselves for you stingy oafs.

                    • They are giving us content for free. Not sure what all I'd going to be I'm this content as far as whether there will be new areas and mobs, but we are getting new content.

                      • To my knowledge, it's only going to be story content. If it's something which raises the level cap and puts a monetary barrier in progression then there will be some serious problems. Hope fully that's not the case though.
