If you say "People didn't earn something...."

People earn their weapons/armour. I am confused about posts that say "you didn't earn this", "you didn't earn that", "Xur should be removed", etc. etc. etc. If you did a Tiger Strike and it dropped - you earned it by fighting your way through to the end If you did Nightfall and it dropped - you earned it by fighting your way through to the end If you did 28 Weekly and it dropped - you earned it by fighting your way through to the end If you did the Raid - you earned it If you bought it from Xur - you earned those strange coins by doing numerous events The only exception I would say is a random drop in the Crucible, where you get something no matter how good or bad you played. That's not really "earned" as such..... but playing over and over and over in PvP, some people might consider it "earning by enduring PvP" Long and short of it .... playing is earning, noone should be upset someone else is getting stuff they already have as it does not affect their game in any way. This is mainly a PvE game where you HELP each other. That's my tuppence on it. EDIT 1: Thank you Gaslight. Yes, Exotic Bounties also count. An oversight on my part. EDIT 2: Thank you Maledious. I do not advocate AFK players getting rewards. EDIT 3: I apologise if this post seemed like a complaint. It wasn't. I only seek to understand people's feelings on the matter and try to make us a more tolerant and better community. EDIT 4: Please post why you are upset that other people get gear and you don't. Does it affect your game? It is more of an affront to the time you have put in and gotten nothing from it? EDIT 5: Changed "tired" to "confused about" as the original word didn't really reflect my intentions.

  • My feeling is that we're all playing a damn video game. Suggesting that we're putting in work or "earning" our gear is silly. The point of the experience is to be a distraction from real life. It doesn't matter how hard the raid is. If you had to earn raid gear by doing manual labor, then you'd be earning it. No matter how you slice it, you're still on the couch. Don't take it so seriously. It's a lot more fun that way, and that's what it's meant to be.

      • No, you don't earn anything in this game except 2 different kinds of marks, and exp. everything else that I can think of off the top of my head is given to you by RNG.

I got my patience and time from a legendary engram, which came from a level 7 dreg in patrol mode, I don't see how I earned that lol, only exotics you earn are the bounty ones since you work in different set of goals.

            • To be completely honest in terms of PvE content, especially strikes, I feel like the rewards should either be given out according to worthwhile activity in the strike itself or on an equal level, one person gets an exotic? So does everybody else in the strike. The reasoning behind the first should be obvious if you play well you should be rewarded justly. The second people will probably take issue with because they want to feel special when they get something to make them feel better about themselves, a sort of validation. But the thing is these strikes are a group effort, aside from afkers and people who join in at the last five minutes, the two others likely contributed just as much and without their contribution it is entirely likely that you may not have gotten an exotic at all (I'm not sure how exactly the RNG works in Destiny and when the number is generated), so should they not be rewarded as equally? Or should we continue this precedent where it doesn't matter how well you do or what you do, just as long as you exist there in the reward screen what the -blam!- does it matter? People won't feel like ULTIMATE BADASSES/Special snowflakes if others are being rewarded on the same level as them even though it doesn't matter they could have killed a single dreg and then shot a wall for 45 minutes. This whole back patting bullshit is why we have so many whiny little shits turning into shitty adults who think they're the most fantastic thing to happen in the history of the goddamn world.

            • If your actually playing then you earned it but getting on a list in a stream waiting for your name to be called then jump in at the last second in a nightfall while the streamer shoots the boss with one shot then you get something definitely not earning it and ruins the game for those who actually play and get in a strike with these people who suck with good gear

                • This again? Getting loot that is completely random for doing anything is not earning that said loot. You simply got it because the game rolled it's dice and the result was an item for you. It's very simple, the only thing you "earn" in this game as it has been posted a hundred times over are the following: - Strange coins - Any Marks - Rep - Motes of light from xp - Exotics from bounties (not the bounties themselves) What you do with them afterwards is completely irrelevant to others. If you're worried about how others got their loot you seriously need to reconsider your life.

                  • The way people bitch about a mere $20, I think they should worry less about what they "earn" in a game and more about what they earn in a job.

                    • For someone who says that they did not earn their weapons is merely stuck in the daydream that the guardians are rewarded for the bravery, time and effort that put into the game. Yet, this is not the case, the real case is have you been Lucky with the RNG system? Or has it neglected to bless you for putting hours into the game and helped to make the mass amount of time spent roaming around doing strikes, and bounties wasn't a total waste of time.

                    • I agree with everything you've said. I actually posted a similar thread a couple days ago. A good idea that came up in the thread was that Xur could possibly increase the prices of the exotics he sells being that it seems much too easy to stockpile coins in a week or two in addition to transferring coins from another character. With it the way it is now, it is rather simple to buy 2 or even 3 items from him by the time the weekend comes around. In addition, I'm not complaining, but I have grown tired of people saying "you think you're entitled" or "you didn't earn it". Yes, there is a fine line when it comes to how you earn it, but regardless after all the hours people have put in, I think many of us have indeed earned what we have gotten. I will not deny that luck is a factor and the RNG could use some tweaking as well.

The only things you actually 'earn' in this game are your set mission rewards and bounty rewards. Everything else is RNG and you are simply given it by pure luck, no relevance to any work you may have put into the game.

                    • I know right, I'm pretty sure everyone earn it. It doesn't matter if you buy it from Xur. You have to play in order to get something. When people say someone doesn't earn it, I'm like 'really'? So they just stare at the screen and get it. Just like that.

                    • The only things earned in this game are the weapons from the exotic bounties. RNG ruined this game they should've made an exotic bountie for each individual exotic weapon/armor. That would eliminate a lot of problems.

                    • Good post dude. I feel the same way about earning and I couldn't care a lick what others got by a random drop. I am happy for my friends when they score something great and dance when I do which isn't all too often. But this game is only a couple of months old now and we all need to exercise some patience. I think most of the complaints come from under 25 age group because I don't think most older guys (I am 54) really think we should beat the entire game in a week like some do. I want my money's worth and that is measured in years not weeks or months. What's the rush? Give Bungie some time to iron things out. Sure the DLC is not what most expect but is it really less good than what comes with games like COD or Battlefield?

Really depends on what you think the meaning of "earn" is. Earn: verb 1. To gain or get in return for one's labor or service. Dictionary.com I guess you can make the argument that by killing a creature you technically earned an item drop. However the area in wich you got the item doesn't mater so i wouldn't say that by getting a legendary engram drop from a strike or mission you "earned" it. Truth is its all RNG. I think the only items you can "earn" are the items you buy from grinding rep, items sold by zur if you grinded the weekly strike, and maybe some of the items from the raid. But even the raid loot is a bit of a stretch if everyones just cheesing it. Otherwise nothing in this game is earned. Do you earn max level in this game? Some people would argue being level 30 is earned but in reality it isn't. It's all if you got lucky on your role. I've known some really good raiders that couldn't get 30 not because they weren't good but because they simply didn't get lucky (myself included :( ). I've also met some 30s that are horrible players haha. In short skill and effort doesn't really have a factor in the items you get so i would say that most things in this game aren't "earned ".

                    • If you sat in on the atheon cheese and got the mythoclast, or are carried through a raid/strike. You didn't earn shit. I've ran across plenty of teams where someone brings their friend in to loot a normal raid and he/she is underleveled and useless. Raid is still completed. The 25 did not contribute anything other than a boost in our revive numbers yet they got the better drops. So Yeah.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. However, would just like to change a minor part. Honestly, in my opinion, the only people who earn their gear are people who get it for the bounties or buy it from Xur or other vendors. Since no one can control the results of RNG. Case in point, my luck in destiny. I tell my friends alot how unlucky I am in Destiny. This week helped me prove it a bit. Completed nightfall on all 3 characters of mine. Strange coins only. Helped my friends, both received exotics. But thats pretty normal right? So, we did something else. I do public events for each character too. Didn't get a drop for all 3. "Not counting reward for first daily, since its a given" Played with some friends again "after doing 3 more with no drops on main" Decided to do events bounty, after we did 2 on venus during spirit bloom farming. Again, no drops, but they got something. After we finished 3 more, I still had no drops while they both received, even a double drop. Decided to keep going and see how far we had to go. Needless to say after 8 more public events I received nothing, while my friends had only missed one drop each. So, 19 public events in one day without a single drop from it. While my friends received drops for 12/13 events we did together. So, I don't understand how you earn something that is generated by luck? If you receive it from a drop or chest, you have earned nothing. You just were a lucky one. However, thats what RNG is suppose to do. I personally just hate my own luck.
