Thoughts on Destiny Controversy from an Employee in the Industry -DONE-

I have deleted the original post contents. My goal was to inspire those who might be taking Destiny's faults to extreme levels to think a little bit more about the reasons why they may feel deceived. Only to receive too much trolling, disbelief and questioning my credibility into oblivion. I am enjoying the game thoroughly, and hope Bungie resolves many large quarrels with the game. Better itemization would be nice Better communication Better matchmaking Variety in missions These are my top complaints. It was interesting to say the least, to those that responded positively, and constructively, I thank you. Someone commented earlier who said it best what I was trying to convey: "While perhaps they have not phrased it sufficiently, we believe that the author is mainly objecting to the rampant hyperbole and vilification that permeates so much of the objection to the game. Destiny may not meet one's expectations and we firmly believe that everyone should be free to assess the games merits personally, but the constant bombardment of tirades marking Destiny as 'the worst game ever' or asserting that no one should like this game are both misleading and presumptuous. All these rabid screeds do is act as noise, drowning out the valid reasoned complaints."

  • I agree. I've also worked in various areas of this industry, similar industries, and as a professional creative... the game is good. Perfect? No, but -sheesh- so what... we deal with imperfection on a daily basis and Bungie did a ton of work on this. If you think Bungie cut corners just to get your $60 and the end result was Destiny... ... ... lol. Seriously, who went into this expecting "perfection" and "the best game EVER" at the beginning of a new console cycle??? Can you disagree with how they are doing their rollout? Sure, but consider the other side of the table... write a 400 page fiction book and have someone tell you how to publish it and that you're being selfish because you haven't made it available yet/free/bigger/in digital/serial/with illustrations/etc. It sounds like crazy talk on the other side, even if you know the person is excited to read it/own it/collect it/absorb it as a fan. Personally, I'm happy to have it, happy it's something a little different, and happy to see how they expand on it. I've 120 hrs into Destiny atm. I don't want that time back, and I intend to continue playing. Sure, there are things I would have done differently - but then it's not my project and, tbh, if they made it just to make everyone happy I wouldn't be playing it... like that ever ends well. I bought it to enjoy someone else's creativity, it looks great, and I play with family/friends. This last part has made the experience better - tenfold. From an industry perspective... the consumer expectations were/are insanely high... too high to make everyone happy and Bungie had to have known they were walking straight into a shooting gallery (probably hoped not, but let's be realistic). The game would be spread too thin if it served up everyone's favorite flavor. PVE/PVP/Competitive/Casual/Completionists/MMO/FictionFans... that's a short list and very hard to reconcile... add in variables like party/world chat, game length, etc. I dig the game. That said, things I might adjust/change and why: ** The grimoire score and story-unlock concepts were interesting ideas -- not wholly successful but I can guess why they did them. From a creative perspective... the story is choppy, even with something like SmartGlass and a website as companions, but on the other hand they have a lot of elements to build on and the cards do help some... if you read them. Unlike a normal game with linear continuity, I'm guessing we'll see several subplots and tangents. Personally, I would prefer Bungie knit things together a little more (20%)... but still leave us guessing in some areas. I think the story needs a character to "get behind"... a lot of the characters feel aloof or 'incomplete'. I think we need some "this is who this is" characters, based on actions/choices. I think it's funny how some of the characters have been given personalities by the players. ** Bungie has been reacting (engrams, cave, etc). I don't expect forum responses... I've moderated forums as a company voice... it's brutal at best. I'm happy to have the updates, newsletter, schedule of events, and event items. A weekly blog post with a short story would be a nice touch. Might help address this and the above note. ** The problem with offering up a galaxy/universe is people expect the world(s) of you... Any new location is appreciated. I think the 'new planet' comments are really coming from this... I think it's natural. That said, the Mass Effect series had a bunch of planets... can't say they were ALL horribly interesting or that I would have bawked at some consolidation. There's a balance to it. It's too early to complain. ** Balance: give it time ** PVP vs PVE... I like both and tend to PVE first. I don't see the extreme opinions on the boards. It sounds like extreme play styles. I don't feel like I have to PVP and I can still have fun in Crucible. ** I wish the grimoire score had an impact on drops or engram rates... after starting my second character, the completionist in me really wanted some sort of reward. Glimmer just doesn't cut it right now... maybe if there are some new big ticket items coming. my 2c

    • Do the new forum tags showing Bungie responses and the updates in the help.bungie.net issues pages help with your "Communication" issue? Or did you mean something else?

    • platelamp, you have made a good, yet obvious point about Destiny along side it's development. Sure, most conscious gaming consumers agree that it takes heaps of time and arduous labor to develop a game of Destiny's caliber, but, everyone is entitled to their critiques and opinions. I personally like Destiny a great deal and I commend the entire development and producing teams; Bungie and Activision affiliates in all. The graphical and audio detail is immaculate. Traversing through rough and lush terrains whilst hearing the roar of my Sparrow's thrusters, distant gun fire and well orchestrated scores and themes is an amazing experience. Regardless of the vast majority of pros of Destiny, there is also a list of cons, and explaining these cons in detail is a valued key in feedback so that prior development may be flawless if possible. Even though Destiny is currently one of my personal favorite games, I still have many opinions on what is lacking such as the story development and overall lore. Public chat limitations such as proximity chat or matchmaking chat but I digress because the list goes on in great detail. My overall point is that without or feedback, to what value are we as fans? If our opinions are not valued, how can we as the consumer value games made by developers in return?

I'm disappointed by the fact that the initial post was lost. Regardless, it's funny to see how many people jump to discredit your credentials, but some anonymous Reddit user with likely less evidence that he developed anything seems to have a cult of followers. Kudos for making the attempt though!

          • I agree with the old long post and with this shorter one. wanted to do a similar post, I work in QA in the IT field and know about big software projects. Reading about people complaining about "cut" content and "lies" and the "evil" game makers, is just laughable. There were at least 400 people working on this , crunching time , in the last years. They discussed everything from all angles. Are all of them evil and stupid and your standard gamer dude, not even knowing what you really want (most post do not offer alternatives) , are of course right and deserve the perfect non existing multimedia experience. ofcourse not all their decisions were correct and there are a lot of things not working well . I would enjoy more variety in the missions. Stealth, close quarters, mini puzzles, more boss mechanics (outside raids) with phases, vehicle and tower combat etc. ALL of this can come though, at a later date. The level of polish (GUI, Art, Music, Details) and mechanical quality (gameplay, look and feel of the shooter itself) , was very time consuming to achieve. Now, hopefully they can work on diversity. ps - to OP and people wanting to give constructive feedback and make the game better: do not let immature, ignorant and missinformed replies get to you. pps : I believe, most of the points making the game sub-par can be fixed. Even story and diversity. With the good foundation there is already. People should support new IPs ! They are incredibly costly , especially the AAA.

            • If everyone hates this game so much then why do you keep playing it? It's a video game people. If you have this much shit to complain about then I can't imagine what your life outside of a video game is like. I think Bungie did a great job tackling the genre they are going for. And for the people out there complaining about things being to complicated and hard, then they never ran a raid when W.o.W. Vanilla first came out. I agree with platelamp. Yes I wish there was a easier way to communicate in the tower to find Nightfall weekly or Raid groups instead of walking up to the leveled Character you find appropriate to team up with and PM them through PSN. Maybe a open Chat that connects every server would maybe help out these things. Granted there is only one raid right now, but its only been out for a month as there should be. Also I'm happy with the move they made with the end Strike boss loot. Like every MMO you should be rewarded for the work you have done and not just be given the scraps. At the same time I wouldn't mind to see if they gave say a Hunter a piece of Warlock gear instead of giving you something for your Class every time. Yes you can't wear it but you can break it down for a Shard. Like I said before it's only been a month. I mean back in the day of cartridges you played a game because it was fun. Even Playstation 2 with Socom 2. People use to do ninja jumps, sink into the stair at cross roads and us IW's. Yes it sucked, but you learn to play around that and find the fun in the game. We should be so lucky that we have the ability to get updates from a company that doesn't have to do anything at all to make the game better, but chooses too listen and try to make things to our liking.

                • I only play a handful of games. Destiny is in the top 3 right now. Im enjoying it despite some of the faults you mention. Most of which should have been ironed out during the beta, prior to launch. The game has been keeping me interested at the moment. For anyone to say this game is the worst... they simply have not experienced enough of the game or others to make a valid assessment. My largest complaint... it's a bit too easy. My highest happy thought... I can go all over and do what I want in a less than normal "to the script" environment.

                • I'm going to be honest: me and my mates are having a blast with Destiny. It's fun, unique and enjoyable. Sure, the story could've been expanded upon, but there are plenty of games out there with a worse and much less detailed story.

Platelamp has since edited his OP because it was so hard to take seriously, below was my original response: I've also worked as a tester and I completely disagree. I've never seen a game go backwards like Destiny has. Basic stuff is missing and the game is not nearly as big as you seem to want us to believe. Your comments are so out of scope with normal game development I question your honesty. There have clearly been redesigns and content cut to be resold as dlc. This is not normal at all. Most games do not delay to rewrite existing content into dlcs. Quite frankly, I think you're blowing smoke up people's rears. You talk about how amazing Destiny is, are you serious? It's a very average loot grind with a poorly presented story, dated mission structure and an all around lack of creativity. The loot progression itself is below average in it's implementation. The world is empty landscapes with monsters sprinkled on it. No npcs, animals, anything. It's very bare bones. You go so far as to tell people with legitimate concerns to just keep quiet and move on. That's very disingenuous and says a lot about your character. Companies are responsible for their products and Bungie has tarnished their name significantly with this disservice to it's fans. I find it distasteful you are attempting to present your work experience as a form of credibility while being intentionally obtuse about basic game design.

Ok we discussed a lot of stuff about this game in this forum. Sometimes many poeple become very emotional. But didn't this show us, how much heartbleed and expectation were on this game? But you ask for some constructive feedback ____________________________________________________________________________ Multiplayer _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ We all saw us against way better and way worse enemies. Gear ................................................................................................................................ In my opinion a second set of gear, special for the crucible and just for there, would be nice. This equip can not be upgraded, it is already at the best level. Everyone had the same Autorifle / Handcannon etc and you can just change rounds and optical attachement. Levelsystem / Matchmaking ................................................................................................................................ Especially in Curcible should be an stand alone experience progress work. -> Poeple with 29 who just go through PVE get matched with 26-30 players who just play PVP. Hardly fair in any way. Maybe an Trueskillsystem like Halo 3 had would be nice. Costum Lobbies ................................................................................................................................ Many players want costum lobbies to play private matches with there friends. We don't ask for a forge or something. Just private matches with custom rules like kills to win or something like that. Stable Connections / Netcode ................................................................................................................................ It is painful to see, you can't kill an enemy because he lags or the server don't receive your shots fast enough. Sometimes Killscores apply to the screen minutes after you killed that guy. You get killed while you already was around a corner. In an next gen Game, this shouldn't happen and especially not a experienced team like bungie who brought us games like Reach. Singleplayer / Coop _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Become really Legend! Questdesign ................................................................................................................................ Ok Shooter hadn't always the most innovative styles of Questdesign, but the whole Campaign is even in this genre not even close to his ancients or the normal concurrents. There aren't any Genrestandarts like a Sniper / stealth mission, vehiclemissions. Not even a turret sequenz is in it. It would be so nice if you had to infiltrate a Cabalfortress to steal some secret plans or something. Or to hijack a carrier to rescue some friends (Truth and Reconsciliation style) It is bitter reality that the quests in 90% of the Missions (Strikes including) are just Run to place A Set Up Dinkelbot. Defend against 3 Waves run to Place B Kill the Boss Wait for the timer to reach 0 Missionenvironment ................................................................................................................................ Every Mission, even the strikes, play 90% of the time in the normal patrolenvironment. This means, we explore the the patrollocations through the story. So all exploration in the world finds place in the Campaign. I ound really few places i don't saw in the campaign as i walked though the open areas. Would the Missions had some special areas, you just can explore while you have this missions, the patrolmissions would be do much more fun and I had a reason to explore this world. The Story ................................................................................................................................ We all saw the Trailers, saw pieces of the story, we don't even get mentioned in the final game. The whole story was more like an bad introduction to the several enemies in the world. We have NPC's who could explain us some of the things of this world. The could, but they don't (Speaker i look at you) If you had to give us a game with so much missions as content, why you just give us Earth and Moonwith each 2 major locations and make an epic story about fighting against the Fallen and the Hive? Later in other DLC you can introduce the Vex and Cabal with there own storyline. After playing this game so long, I haven't any clue whats the motivation of each of the parties. Where did they come from? Whats there inner social structure (Fallen have several Houses, but what are those Houses?) This is explained in a few words at the grimoire cards. A thing you unlock in the game and can't enter through the game! Why can't the game explain me, whats an Vex or an Fallen? We just get the information: It's evil, shoot it. Sad. The worst is, we are from begin to end strangers to this world. And the fact, that this story hasn't any dramtargic approach. It just stopped in at the exposition. Your not entirely through, You stuck somewhere between it. Serverconnection ................................................................................................................................ We are in weeks 3 after release. I still don't trust the connection. Have still connection losses. This kicks me from nightfallstrikes in the same frequenzy as in patrolmissions or daily heroic misssions. Matchmaking ................................................................................................................................ Nightfall / heroic / Raid has still no Matchmaking. Ok I'am full with you with the Raid, but Nightfall and heroic should be with MM. I don't want to spam my Friendlist everytime again to search 2 other guys who have time to a specific time to play this with me (again, I don't play this solo cause of the shitty connection). Judging _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ In his current state i give this game a 56/100 Multiplayer 4/10 Story 2/10 Gameplay 8/10 Graphic 8/10 Sound 8/10 I don't go in actual gameplay, sound and graphic. Just so much. There are enough places to glitch under the map / farm mobs (lootcave). Also there are moments, the music outruns the actual game: And sometimes you find some low rez textures / textures which didn't load fast. So here you have my opinion about the game. not a zero, but not even a game worth to be called a blockbuster. Not yet. Edit: Alot of poeple give this Post likes. But, because some guys said, i should post it int he feedback area, I opened up a new Thread http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/70918429/0/0/1 would be nice, if you could comment and like it there so bungie see this in the end.

If anyone actually believes that this guy is anywhere near qualified to make this statement - I laugh at you. A QA guy trying to make himself out to be a game dev in order to fulfil his agenda. "Move on"? Yeah, okay, we'll move on... So after paying the RRP for a game in which the majority of its content was cut in order for said content to be later sold as DLC, we should not be mad but instead be thankful that we get to play Bungies game? I'm sorry, but f/uck you. No, the fact is that Bungie should be thankful that people are spending their money on Destiny, not insidiously thanking them while siphoning more money away via this shitty DLC practice. Edit: Half of that cut-content, like a trading system/ dropping loot, a naming system, entering the game via your ship, a more diverse/ dynamic Dinkle Spark, loot drops from bosses, Titans who are actually big enough to warrant their name, moving from a mission into Patrol without a menu or loading screen, and more than one or two actual players in Patrol seem like things that should all be in the game to me.

                                  • What would be nice is to give weapons parts and other elements to the Gunsmith and have him craft a weapon of my choosing. Then have the ability to make the gun a legendary and exotic on my own.

                                  • The only things i hate about the game are the stupid radar and legendary engrams turning blue when decrypted. That is all.

                                    • Look, I don't care how you or anyone else tries to spin it. You say the game is complete. It's not. The game we were promised via every single advertisement, trailer, news article, convention, etc...that is not the game we got. We were led to believe we were investing in something more. If the game were more fun I could be understanding, but it's obviously incomplete and a total disaster, which is why what this employee is saying feels so accurate, as if the pieces of the puzzle were finally put together. I don't care how much time they spent away from their families to build this game. In the end someone at Bungie made a terrible decision or listened to someone they shouldn't have, and the end result is that they made a terrible game. End of story. There's no point to this game at all. You play through an abysmal story and suffer through a bare bones PVP to get to light level 28 or 29, and then do the single raid to get to 30....and then what? Nothing. Redo it on another character? No thanks, the game is repetitive enough as it is. There's no way to sit around in the Tower and chat with people. There's no cool looking end-game armor. There's no variety to missions. There's no plot. So don't come in here and try to make us feel bad just because you 'test games'. Reality is that their cut content is better than the content they left in.

                                      • So I have disposable income that I will not spend on another Bungie/Activision title/DLC. Got that Bungie? Activision? maybe if more understood the issue here and said: gee. I could use a tank of gas rather than some micromanaged hack title that disconnects and under-delivers. "..what really got me upset, was that I have to wait a FREAKING WEEK to get past 100VG that I earned!!! I earned that! That was my TIME! My Money! how dare you!!"
