Don't people play for fun anymore?

I remembered why I started playing video games, it was a way to escape into a fantasy world for hours on end that provided entertainment and just fun. These days, it seems like everyone has forgotten what the simple purpose of video games are; Destiny being no exception. It seems whether it's PVP or even PVE; players have gotten so serious about playing. Now don't get me wrong, when engaging an enemy, of course everyone wants to win, but even if you lose, it should have been fun just to try, especially when facing off an enemy with allies at your side. Sigh...maybe I am just sentimental and I probably will get heat for this post, but....I really want to know....do any of you players...just play to have fun...win or lose...just the adventure itself makes you happy? Hi everyone, first off I would just like to thank all of you for commenting on the post. Even if you have different opinions, it's absolutely fine because you are more than entitled to it. I was just happy to read that so many of you still believe in the basic fundamentals of fun, and even though some of you have carved out your own definitions of the word and what it means to you, I sincerely hope that you truly enjoy your gaming experiences, whether its with Destiny or any other game you might play. Thank you for reading, and SHINE ON ;)

  • I play for fun. The loot, challenges (like the daily heroic story missions, weekly heroic strikes, bounties, etc.) are just icing on the cake and just more reason for me to play. Destiny is one hell of a fun game and that's why I'm enjoying it so much, as well as many others.

  • Video games have become like a sport, eSports if you will, people are starting to see them as competitions that they must win or be really depressed.

  • I just don't think the PVP is balanced, that's why I find it annoying, I had a 1.4 before I said screw it and now I just run around in matches waiting for them to end so I can get crucible marks because the factions only take those.

      • For the most part, I do play just to have fun. Which is why the majority of my gameplay has been PvE. However, I often have a group of friends online that want to play PvP, which is when I begin having way less fun. Not because I don't like PvP, don't get me wrong - I love it -, but some of the tactics in PvP are so cheap to anyone else not doing the exact same play-to-win style gameplay the enemy team is. I shouldn't have to practice slide shotgunning into a melee beatdown just to win against the other players who are doing the same thing - Especially if it's a titan sprinting at you with his shield/barrier up with a shotgun, or a hunter using his Blacedancer super(which lasts way too long). I understand that each class has it's specific role, and subclasses only aim to enhance that role, but there's no real balance between them all, which is the problem. There's no real counter to specific types of gameplay when factoring in class specific abilities. How is anyone supposed to really stop a titan charging at you with full health, an extra shield, and a shotgun? You can't. Even if you shotgun him straight in the head, with a full impact shotgun, he will live. How do you stop a hunter who just used his bladedancer super while you're not across the entire map with a sniper and supernatural reflexes? You don't, he can just sit and spam his melee/charge and never take any real damage because he's so impossible to hit, and god forbid you're ever even 50 feet from him, because you will die. Some things in PvP just need to be toned down a little, while others need a bit more of a buff. PvP right now just isn't entirely fun unless you consider charging at everyone with a shotgun fun. PvE, however, I find to be a wonderful experience, whether it be grinding strikes or just playing patrol on various planets. I think that's the main issue with this type of argument. Even people who do play to have fun, find it difficult to have fun when everyone just uses the most anti-fun tactics available, without regard to anyone else. Not to mention people dancing over your dead body after they just two-pieced you in PvP(Something even Gears of War nerfed after a while). It's pretty frustrating. For a company so accustomed to having to nerf similar tactics in other games, you'd thought they'd have learned by now. Till then, I'll just be playing mostly PvE unless I'm dragged into PvP by my friends.

I will give you some heat. It's like the people getting in your way sometimes, say for example I have an interceptor but an ally, is on foot. He bitches at me for getting him killed when I was about a quarter mile infront of him. That's, why I choose to run solo. Back, then before video games were almost always like multiplayer. IThen there was always a great expansive journey by yourself. This draws back to skyrim which came out a bit back. It, was expansive as an old racing game that had a whopping 114 real world miles. Or just cause 2, sure thats fun on it's own but with the multiplayer. IT'S A LOT BETTER. Or, saints row 2 to me the only decent saints row game where 3 kind of fell flat to me 4 was okay, at least slightly more grounded than 3. where the 3rd took a detour at cluster-blam!- junction.

        • I always play for fun! In fact i'm not even that big of a fan of any competitive MP..I'll play them every once in a while but to me the exploration and immersion of big interesting worlds are far more enjoyable. (might have something to do with the fact that i usually suck at MP in general :P) So, in that regard i don't really play for fun as i don't like to lose ALL the friggin' time ( I know: get gud and all..but yeah this does not equal FUN to me). I have to say, I like the PvP and the co-op in Destiny so i might get better... :)

        • I play computer games for two things: story and fun. Lately I'll admit that, at my advanced age, I actually find it helps keep my reflexes ticking and a boss fight is good cardiovascular exercise, but story and fun. Sadly, Destiny is lacking the first of those, but one reason I play MMOs is the continuing plot. In worried about the PvP and emphasis on raiding. Neither of these leads to fun. Both push the competitive side of play above enjoying the event. But, the game's young. We'll see what happens.

        • Yeap I do. That's exactly the reason I play as well, to have fun. The experience is what keeps me going. Not whether I win or lose.

          • I'm definitely in the same boat. I don't have time to be a dedicated grinder, making sure my character is tip-top. I play for the thrill and enjoyment of battle. The loot and exp are just the cherry on top :) Find a clan or group of friends that prioritizes fun over other things!

          • People get crazy trying to be #1. Most of it is self esteem issues. They have to work it out themselves. That's why so many of them are nit picky because they expect everyone to be perfect.

          • Play a game for fun?! What blasphemy is this?! You should be ashamed for wanting to have fun when the obvious point of any game is to win and stomp the opposition into the dust. *Obvious sarcasm is obvious*

          • Ikr? Video games is a place for me to escape and relax from school, problems going on, etc. Most importantly, I have a ton of fun all the time. I don't pay attention to the review of Destiny being 6.5/10, 3/5, etc. As long a game is fun to play, to me it is considered an awesome game. Destiny does that for me

This is exactly how my buddy and I play games... Sure we do play competitive and the general MMO farming and such but mostly we explore the world and stand in awe of its wonders... For example we spent 2 hours in the Black Garden mission slowly walking through and listening to the sounds and trying to determine what random objects meant... Which I think I'd the point of a space opera game... It's not so much about the official story so much as the experience that each individual player has... I discovered so many things that I doubt many people have or really cared abo it doing... Boosting vehicles over an invisible wall before the Archon Priest fight, jumping above the core in the second strike on Venus, etc etc... Adventure and discovery just like it should be... In fact if anybody wants to play slow and just enjoy the world... Add TheStash8 on XBLA
