TL:DR Basically Bungie wants people to hit the max level in a reasonable amount of time. That is why it is Low. This is for two reasons, One, your friends will be able to catch up to your guardian fairly easy. and Two, You can begin a manner of Horizontal leveling up. Where you focus on the juicy part of the game. Getting Gear, and playing with your build and becoming a bad ass.
My personal feelings on this are cool. Awesome. Means we can get all 3 classes to max level, and share gear between them. Perfect. Cant -blam!-ing Wait. If its True. But as SpaceBeaver pointed out, this article is trash. While i think the concepts i put in the TLDR stand true, We will not know what the level cap is until Bungie confirms something.
Also note the picture( Credit to ZERO XVII) There is also old video where there was a level 27 titan.
Also as others have said, @UrkMcGurk · Jun 28 I didn't say anything about level 20 in that interview!

Urk also replies @UrkMcGurk Alpha was accelerated. to the question of " I really hope that change the level cap, because when I played the alpha I went to level 8 in the span of 10 hours"
This implies the obvious. We wont level that fast come launch.
Also. As Normundo pointed out, seen in this video http://youtu.be/cRKC2U4QFHA Datto explains how in the Alpha it stated, after level 20, we will earn Motes of Light by earning experience after level 20.

1)How do you feel about a level cap in general?
2)Does this mean the majority of the game will be played post max level?
In Bungie We Trus7
-
I hope level cap is higher than 20
-
The level cap is not 20 remember? You get talent points for each time you level up to use in the skill tree each focus is 20 levels.
-
-
It's cool for me just got to lock down specials And get all the sweet loot to punish enemies
-
If this game is expected to be played for a decade I think the cap should be a lot higher maybe even 1000.
-
Back in my day we had a level cap of 20 and we were damn happy about it.
-
I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if the max level cap was low. Bungie has clearly stated they don't want level grinding to be the meat and potatoes of the game vs exploring and adventuring. I feel that the game will focus on a more horizontal-based leveling/upgrade system as the improvement focus. Which is fine with me. Plus we all see to forget or be unaware that most MMO-like games have temporary level caps until later dates/expansions.
-
I like the projected cap of 20. It means in a fairly reasonable amount of time we can gain access to all abilities and start playing with our build, just as you said. The real experience will be the amount of content we can access after 20 which with such a low cap should be huge. Lots of chances for horizontal improvements with this. Thumbs up I say.
-
Bungie has made sure that there's still a lot to upgrade and do after you're done leveling up. I'm not too worried about it
-
Don't care about levels since this game is an FPS. It's like the game "Guild Wars" where every player is the same level and winning depends on team work and player skill. You can get nice items like exotic guns/armor, but I bet a well-skilled player can kill any exotic-equipped and mediocre-skilled players with ease.
-
Level does not matter besides Items and subclasses. Its all about Gear and Weapon choices.
-
I like a low level cap, the game should be based around legendary gear, scouring the landscape looking for that perfect armor that suits you. Having too many levels detracts from customization. Take a look at skyrim, ESO or WoW, everyone uses Dragonscale or Deadric in skyrim, the same sets in ESO, and everyone uses the same epics in WoW. If bungie has a shitload of good level 20 armor that's all very different every guardian will be unique
-

1)How do you feel about a level cap in general?
I'm fine with this, really from what we know Destiny is not lacking in content. Also I play WoW from time to time and trying to get to lvl 90 is a pain. Granted it's better now compared to BC but still...
2)Does this mean the majority of the game will be played post max level?
Possible, but we can't be 100% sure.

Edited by Hiei Vegeta: 6/30/2014 7:51:27 PMLevel cap is most likely 20 , what you are seein there ie lvl 21 or 27 .... Is an armor that allows you to bAttle at a higher level .... Gear that lvls you up as you wear it known as "light" watch Dattos video about the tower and gear Though he could be completely wrong..... And so could I!
-
Most signs point to twenty except... for me... If there is a third subclass which most logic points to.. The level progression with only 20 levels doesn't make sense... If we have to hit fifteen to get the second class.. And it took a level to unlock each tier of skills what are your theories on how they would fit two additional subclass progressions in after lvl fifteen with a cap of 20

At my age, I've played a host of games with level caps and gaming beyond. In all cases, where games have legs post cap, the cap is really the training wheels, the story, the getting your feet wet with the world, the enlightenment phase... a much longer tutorial than most are used to, to gain a breath and scope of the game. You see this a lot in good MMOs or loot franchieses like Diablo X. Some will say, the leveling system seperates the casual from the hard core gamer, others will say it's there to let you learn how the deeper aspects of the game work. Even more will say it lets you learn how to fight alongside and in a team fashion so that when you get to end game, you can actually have a depth and appreciation for the finer mechanics in the game so you can successfully engage end game content... whatever, they all have the same theme... education / experience / preparation for end game. The point is to get to the level cap, where the 'real' game begins in most cases of these types of games. Now the other function it has is to set a qualifier for a toon to reach before s/he can equip the end game gear / weapons. Developers can use the level cap ultimately to set how much 'work' a player needs to do to reach the cap. Whether that level cap is 2 or 2000 is somewhat an arbitrary number. It's how much work it takes to obtain each level. Final Fantasy for example was known for what I would label not so delicately as Japanese Torcher Quests to break through a premature level cap(s). In one case, when you wanted to take on a double class with your toon, you had to go collect all manner of these ultra rare components that resulted in you taking excessively long travels through their game from point A to point B or joining a party with a teleport capble white mage and having s/he tele your ass all over. Then, you had to wait and farm a rare spawn until it dropped the item you needed from the three distinct rare mobs which could take hours... each located in a deadly location in its own right with mobs that could wreck you... Then when you got to level 50, if you wanted to continue leveling, you had to go on another set of horrific quests culminating in a 'fight yourself' kind of battle, where you litterally fought a clone of yourself and your current powers. It sucked and unless you knew someone with ultra powerful gear, or farmed it, you were stuck as the computer could use your abilities far more efficiently than you ever could... so you needed a gear advantage to have a chance.... Though the game went to level 70 eventually (as they scale would slide - get to that in a minute). Now, the only reason games like FF, Diablo, Borderlands... and the like eventually increased the level cap was typically to introduce a new set of powers for the players, and thus, a new set of harder end game content, and thus a new portion of story which them corresponded with this "power" increase to remain a challenge for the player. Along with this came a whole slew of new gear as well. Afterall, when the cap increases, all the old level capped gear now would change... so where it used to be level X... when they increase the cap by 5 or 10, here comes all the new gear that you want to go quest for right? + + + So with the above in mind, I go back to your question - how do I feel about a level cap in general? Generally, in open world games, its a necessary evil. Its a mechanic by which all manner of end game content and max power of both player and enemy is measured. + + + To your second question, Does this mean the majority of the game will be played post max level? It depends whether you are a casual player or a longer term / dedicated / hard core player. If you fall into the latter category, then absolutely. I expect most 'fans' of destiny or games like them, will absolutely have a max level character of all 3 classes... whether that's 20 or 100. That will happen in the first couple weeks to a month for the lion share of the players that get the game day one. Those players will spend their post level cap days in raids, crucible, strikes and daily events as made available by Bungie with their 24x7 support. One expects a host of things not yet announced with this kind of around the clock support and 3 major titles plus a host of mid major release supplimental updates. Then, as level caps hit (and believe me, with a game like this, they will), those same players will be out to make the new level cap with each of their toons - expect less than a week per toon at that point as players master how to level cap and with legendary equipment / end game equipment dropped. Then hunt for the new gear and solve the new strikes, raids, etc over the course of that release duration with the new maxed level gear starts. Of course, there will be event specific gear, rare items only available for participation in the daily events, or achieving a particular status / goal from a unique in game event which may correspond with holidays, bungie days, etc... players will be all over these kinds of things as well, all of which will happen post level cap. It's a cycle, and definitely post level cap fun. Just the way I see it of course. We will all have better suspicions after the Beta, but definitely know post Sept 9! Cheers,

Despite what people are saying. I still plan on the level cap reaching level 30 or higher at launch.
-
>Interview never states the level cap is confirmed 20. It is only going off the horse shit speculation this community concocts. >TechRadar is an unreliable source. >The level cap isn't 20. The level cap for your focus is 20.
-
I like the LVL cap and motes of light system a lot.
-
1.) I'd like the lvl cap to be 25 but I don't mind that there is one. 2.) I can see that we play most if the game post lvl cap as destiny is huge, that said we could lvl really slow and not reach the cap till 3/4 the way through. We won't know till launch
-
1 & 2) I don't mind a level cap, considering the story doesn't end with this game. However, I do still think it's a low number (wished it was 30) and I have a feeling people will get burned out of the loot game and move on to other games after they beat the campaign and had their fill of the PvP (good or bad). The game will be played post max level, but the real question is: how long will a player invest their time in the game after max level and completion of the campaign?

Edited by EliteStriker144: 6/30/2014 6:25:49 PMIts Bungie trying something new, and based on the past, I like their new. So bring it on.

I'm happy it's like this. It keeps your items from becoming garbage. You ever play border lands and find a purple weapon (the rarest kind of weapons in the game) just for it to become useless because you leveled up. I don't want to put upgrades, time and money into an exotic weapon just for me to level up and have it become useless.

Edited by Tibbaryllis2: 6/29/2014 11:31:59 PMEven though a 20 level cap seems very doubtful, I don't understand all the hate dealing with a low cap. Every MMO I've ever played became interesting once you reached the cap. Before that point you're just inching your way forward until ??/skull enemies become red, red enemies become orange, orange enemies become yellow, yellow enemies become green, and green enemies become grey. Once you hit the cap and realize the reds, oranges, and yellows aren't going to change (until the next expansion comes out), is when you start playing the real game. A low level cap is also going to be crucial to the item leveling system. Nobody wants to be constantly invested in leveling weapons that will be junk by the time you're through leveling them. The horizontal development, I.e. Item acquisition and leveling, is where the real end game content of this game is going to be. Edit: for an extreme example the people who are angry about a low level cap need to consider if they really want Destiny to be a game like EVE. EVE, IMO, is a truly fun game, but 90% of its players will never participate in the end game play; not because they're not good enough, but because they didn't start early enough in the life of the game. WOW hits a moderately good pace for level capping, but even then it's possible to hit the cap in a few weeks with moderate play. At that point it's relatively easy to spend the next few months gearing your character and earning achievements. I expect Destiny to be fairly similar to this model.

Edited by Metabyte: 6/30/2014 2:31:51 PMI am actually looking forward to the level cap being low. I am hoping that battle difficulty becomes less level based at that point and is more skill based. I hate finding enemies that you cannot put a dent in and then they proceed to one hit kill you because of level difference. I hope the majority of the game is played at max level. I think the hunt for better loot is a much more thrilling concept than having to gain enough experience to gain a level to get more powerful.

Pshh. No cloak, no deal. #Hunters.
