Are there any lore reasons for equipping Exotics?

Not sure if this is something I’ve missed all this time, but is it ever explained why we can only equip 1 Exotic weapon and armour piece? Obviously, it’s to stop us being even more powerful, but is this throttling given a lore-style explanation? I’ve just always attributed it to us all having the same spacesuit (which is why we can always breathe despite whatever planet or moon we’re on) and that the armour we use in game simply attaches to it. And when it comes to attaching exotics to the suit, it requires more power to operate, hence only being able to equip one exotic piece of each.

  • Not that I can properly recall, I have some nagging idea of the strange properties they exhibit making having too many an issue but that could be from a different game tbh But the main point is that the gameplay and game mechanics do NOT represent the lore based in game reality. Ikora and Cayde popping off back to back supers, switching subclasses instantly, Felwinter learning other class abilities using different elements… There’s a whole slew of examples where the reality far exceeds the gameplay we see. Cuz making content is hard or something…
Not sure if this is something I’ve missed all this time, but is it ever explained why we can only equip 1 Exotic weapon and armour piece?
I’m not aware of any lore-related rationale explaining why characters in Universe are unable to equip multiple Exotics, however…
Obviously, it’s to stop us being even more powerful
The two reasons previously cited by the devs for why players should never expect to be able to equip multiple Exotic armor pieces simultaneously (even for limited time, inconsequential events) derive from technical limitations of the game engine upon which Destiny 2 was built, namely: A) Exotic armor pieces are generally more graphically complex than their Legendary counterparts and thus take more processing resources to display in game. Allowing players to equip multiple Exotics simultaneously would therefore lead to more frequent issues with poor performance in higher player-count activities (6v6 PvP, the Tower) especially for those playing on less powerful hardware. B) The game engine is really only capable of keeping track of so many active effects (between Perks, Mods, Exotic effects, Subclass Fragments, buffs/debuffs and Activity modifiers) before major systems start to break down and “bad things” happen. Because of the way in which major mechanics are fundamentally tied to the underlying code of the game engine, there is no realistic way to improve/alter certain aspects of the game without a time-consuming and expensive set of updates to the engine itself. This would be a difficult enough ask for a game at the height of it’s popularity and profitability; given the series of setbacks this dev team has experienced over the past few years, it would be irresponsible for them to attempt such a overhaul at this time. • Sentient exotics probably get jealous if you try to equip others.

      • Lore-wise, probably not so much. There are two Felwinter Warlock exotics which probably indicates he wore them simultaneously and Osiris looks like he is wearing about 3 of them if you count ornaments: Dawn Chorus/Sunbracers/Lunafaction Boots. Our canonical Guardian is powerful but technically we are more of an anomaly rather than being stronger than our NPC counterparts. Osiris couldn't account for us in his simulations, Elsie didn't have any changes to her multiverse trip until she met us, both the Emissary and Savathun hinted at our ability with the 4th wall, etc.

        • It's just a game mechanic. Lore wise, there is no limit to exotic usage, and ability/super cooldowns vary between guardians (for example, because of Ikora's studys on the light, she can be seen using multiple supers in a row)

If you take the game engine limitations as cannon, it could be that they warp reality with their effects, causing anyone wielding more than one to be torn into a 5th dimensional space.

          • The reason I remember from a long time ago has to do with the game engine not working well with 2 exotics. Don't know how true or false it is.
