Opinion: The hunter dodge is just about worthless

*Disclaimer* I love Hunters and I love Destiny but... Look, I get it, it fits the whole "hunters are lone wolf, solo players" thing and that's all well and good, but after playing Trials this weekend (and PVP in general since launch) I can't help but be reminded, yet again, that outside of the Nightstalkers invisibility perk, the Hunter dodge is more or less useless when compared to other class abilities. Whats the use of having an ability that only helps you (barely, you can still be killed while dodging) in games where the enemy team is moving as one, usually with 4 Mida's, just waiting to catch someone out of place. And I've seen all the arguments: "Its the play style for Hunters" "You just have to get good with it" "It's saved me plenty of times" and the always popular "If you dont like it dont play that class" but we cannot deny that, even at the best of times, the usefulness of this ability is dwarfed by team-healing rifts and shields that can block off entry-points and damage enemies, and it kinda ruins the fun of an otherwise awesome class.

  • (Disclaimer, I hate PvP in general, so this will be more aplicable to PvE) Part of it I thought was that you can get enemies to lock on to you and then dodge to increase survivability, drawing their fire away from other members of the team so they can do damage. I do wish the cooldown was decreased, or the ability of the dodge only worked when the cooldown was done but you could still dodge anyway (I also know that would make Hunters incredibly powerful compared to the other classes, but I don't know what you could do to even it out for them). Besides, I don't think everythinghas to be about "the team", Hunters are (as far as I understand it) all about mobility by default, so it makes sense that their class ability is about more mobility.

  • Would be nice to have a shorter cooldown, all classes get invisibilty after dodge with increased reload speed or handling for you and nearby allies for a short time.

  • They should have made the hunter class ability that promotes a scouting play-style. Like a flaregun that spots enemies and makes it so your allies do more damage to that target or something like that..

  • Yeah, the only real advantage Hunters have is mobility, but that is a hell of an edge to have. The Titan barricade isn't great either. It's actually pretty annoying in pvp having that thing always popping up between me and the people I'm shooting at. It's actually almost as advantageous for the enemy team. The Stprmcaller rift with arc soul is by far the best.

    • Honestly I feel the dodge roll of hunters is simply an example of the lack of creativity the developer has. Oh. It's a beautiful game..... But.................... Unoriginal as hell. I think they started by building the warlock and titan... And just got to the hunter and were like "Don't know.... Most of the things that make sense either require us to do actual work, or be overpowered........................ -blam!- it let's just make them kinda take half a step sideways, what's the worst that can happen? Not like people are going to not buy the game just because we -blam!-ed over the hunters..."

    • Not entirely. It's very good for DPS. Scenario: boss or mob is tethered or a titan shoulder-charged-damage-amplified the boss and you need to unleash a load of bullets. Rocket launcher reload too slow? Dodge! Sweet Business reload too slow? Dodge! That's an almost continuous hail of 200 bullets in a short amount of time.

      • My son plays with a hunter and honestly, I agree that it's useless. However, I feel that maybe it's because of my play style. I play like a tank and that's why I main a Titan. Maybe, you play more like a Titan than a hunter and just need to change your main class?

      • Anyone that disagrees with any of this is on the wrong side. I’ve played as every class and used their abilities in many scenarios and the hunter doge always comes up short. Gamblers dodge does offer a bit more utility and that fact that it charges faster will make it more available but what exactly are you getting. There is a bunch of ways to make dodge more potent, viable, and balanced.

      • The only real thing that dodge needs to become better without being broken is during the dodge animation all tracking and aim assist on you is negated. It's supposed to be a dodge, so it needs to dodge. No invincibility, no traps, no decoys, just a means of escaping all tracking and aim assist for just a moment. Warlocks can heal or buff, Titans offer protection and cover, and Hunters are survivalists and evasive.

Worthless??? It's straight up cheating with a nightstalker. 😂 Dodge-invis-reload. Combine with the dragons shadow in pvp and it gets even better. Cmon man!

        • It’s only useful when paired with the Dragons crest. Pro tip you will be a crucible god with that chest piece. Just use what you’re normally good with and you’ll destroy. Every time you dodge you get max weapon handling speed, recoil control, movement speed and reload speed for 10 seconds. Pair with nightstalkers invis dodge for best results.

        • It's pretty mediocre, I don't dislike many things in D2. The lackluster dodge is one of them though . It's only useful in certain situations while rift and barricade are functional in almost every encounter. They also provide team support. I can dodge. YAY. It's only good for me unless I'm a nightstalker and can invis-revive. For the other two classes it's not really beneficial to the team. Maybe dodge could leave like a stationary silhouette that draws fire from enemies for 15-20 seconds. Like a stunt double of sorts for Arcstrider. That explodes once it's killed. And dodge could leave a sunspot in the location that you just dodged from. They also could be switched instead of a sunspot it could do an arc pulse. Just my thoughts on how the dodge could be better.

        • not useless when in gun battles it has saved my ass countless times in PVP and PVE. Quick reload while dodging in cover to only let me come out shooting while my wounded victim is reloading or switching weapons.

          • Also, rifts are extremely easy to counter. How? Doge and melee (as long as warlock isn't voidwalker) Also many sidearms, autos, and high rate of fire pulses shred rift. Now, for fact empowering rift is better in PvE but healing in a good deal of instances can't take enough health in time to be effective. This is when being able to completely avoid an attack comes in handy. Also revives can be pretty easy to get because of dodge. As far as the barrier goes it can be dodged through and also it only really hurts on a rally barricade, towering does less(at least from my experience)

            • I actually love it. I find it very useful in general, but auto reloading you weapon is especially great. I know you already expressed your feelings about this, but seriously, you need to use hunters in a unique way to get the most out of them. It was like that in D1 too.

Dodge is great for 'noping' outta situations that are just pointless. Round a corner in control and see three enemy guardians facing you crouched off radar? Nope. Get shot twice by mida? Nope? Some titan with a sword comes charging at you? Nope (well nade and nope) You're up close and personal, you and the enemy are out of ammo, just punching each other. Nope outta there and shoot the fecker in head? Personally, I find the people who think of dodging as lacklustre, usually think of when the shoulda dodged, or just don't think about dodging at all. You wanna tank a rocket, be my guest. I will nope outta there and kill em on the reload

                    • The dodge allows for quicker dps in many instances. Also you can use to get behind someone easily. the dodge in D2 has many uses and is almost as flexible as shadestep. Plus, Arcstrider infinite melee ability which if used properly can drop a whole team easily just because they can't hit you. The dodge definitely isn't easy to use in this manner though. It takes a great deal of skill in predicting movement and knowing how shots from specific weapons connect to the dodges.
