My Take on the Vault Space Upgrade - Weekly Update 29 MAR 15

I've been so excited to find out more about the vault space update since the recent news about it. I've been checking the news tab repeatedly for the past 24 hours, eager to find out more, and hoping there'd be more info about it (yes, I'm addicted to Destiny). And so today, when I saw the title for the latest weekly update (Vaulting the bar), I couldn't click the link fast enough. But as I began reading that we're only getting a measly 4 more spaces for armour, and 4 more spaces for general items, my heart sank. I felt like Bart Simpson unwrapping his Christmas present to find the following: http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/simpsons/images/c/c1/Leecar.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20100717031946 On one hand, I'm appreciative that we're getting something, but ultimately I'm disappointed. I was expecting a lot more, and I was really looking forward to doing a whole lot more in this game and collecting a whole lot more rewards as a result. But that's just not in the cards, because what we've got is really just a temporary band-aid to the problem, not really a fix. 36 Weapon Slots The 16 extra slots for weapons is OK; pretty good; sort of underwhelming. It's very much a "I guess that will sort of do for now" type deal. It will help out for a little while, but it surely won't be long before the current problem repeats itself, what with HoW on the horizon, which will undoubtedly have more than 16 weapons worth acquiring across the respective range of new exotic weapons, raid weapons, and vendor weapons. I wager there are users whom it won't even really help all that much; these are people who currently have full post masters and inventories across all 3 toons. 24 General Item Slots The 4 more general items slots is especially disappointing. Here's the thing, I store all my coins, commendations, and motes in the vault, and I keep the rest of the general section empty because I need to in order to transfer all my materials and consumables from one toon to the next. If I store anything else in the general section, there's not enough spaces for me to transfer materials and consumables -- this of course happens with the weapons and armour sections too. Therefore, I've basically had to give up on the notion of storing sparrows, starships, emblems and shaders, the latter three of which are already beginning to clog up on my inventory across all 3 toons, and I still have many more to procure. 24 Armour Slots The armour section is also a bit sad. Here's another thing, maybe some people don't pay attention to the random perks they roll on raid armour. I on the other hand do, and I complete these raids a lot. I'm often getting raid armour drops -- which is great, I want more drops with different perks/stats -- and so when I get an Unyielding Casque with Inverse Shadow, when I've already got one with Infusion, I keep it, because there may come a time when this perk will be really useful whilst Infusion will be relatively useless, and visa versa. Same goes for all the other varying perks I could roll on these helmets, not to mention the fact that the Intellect, Discipline and Strength stats are randomized. The same applies to the gauntlets and chest armour; they have varying attributes you could roll. If I roll a Relentless Harness with Hand Cannon and Shotgun ammo, whilst already having one with Pulse Rifle and Fusion ammo, I'm not wanting to dismantle either, because obviously there are going to be missions, strikes, raids, and times in general where one weapon set will be more useful than the other. My Conclusion Bungie and co, you've built an FPS MMO that is as loot motivated as any other, with diverse loot suitable for varying applications. This is a good, nay, a great thing, it keeps the game fresh and exciting; there's always new ways to approach the game. But for any of this to actually matter and be utilized, we need storage space in spades. None of this "4 more spaces" nonsense. We need nigh unlimited space. For an idea of what I would be more than happy with, there's a vault concept on Imgur (the author of which I do not know), which you can check out at the following link: http://imgur.com/a/K2Yqk#0 That's how the vault should be, or at least something like that. I want to be able to look at my vault and never have to worry about storage. I want to be able to actually use the vault like a vault: store most everything in it that I'm not currently using, so I can keep all 3 toon's inventories clear of clutter, and grab what I need, when I need it, from a vault that is organized and easy to manage. I get that there's technical challenges, but I'm not a programmer. As blunt or unfair as this may sound, I don't care about the technical challenges, and frankly I'm not interested in learning about them either. It's not my area. If I wanted to understand the technical aspects of building video-games, I'd be studying it and exploring that career. I am just a paying customer, one who's been playing video-games since the Commodore 64, one who's played many games with limitless storage space, one who knows what he wants: a vault with storage space akin to the Imgur concept I shared. It's not a niche want or request. It's the #1 thing your customers are complaining about. I do appreciate that something has been done. Thank you for that. But the problem hasn't really been solved, and it seems like the reason why more storage space is in such high demand, has been totally lost on those who designed this update. EDIT I would like to add that I don't mean to bitch about this (despite the obvious fact that I am bitching about it). I see a lot of comments on the forums to the tune of "everyone is going to complain no matter what Bungie does," and I get that. I'm still looking forward to the new update. There seems to be quite a lot of stuff coming that I'm excited about, particularly the new sound features. It's also great they're giving colour blind players new colour modes. I'm keen to see the fixes for the raids too. I was also very happy with 1.1.1. Shotguns have since been a pleasure to use in PVE; I no longer leave the tower without one. And the new vault transfer features in the companion app is a God-send. I wish Bungie would reverse the Auto Rifle nerf, but apart from that, 1.1.1 got my thumbs up. I definitely feel that Bungie does indeed listen to their community to some extent. Which is why I wrote this up in the first place. Here's hoping they see all the issues, have a good look at the Imgur vault concept, and say "OK, lets find a way to make something like that happen; where there's a will there's way." I am 100% certain that even if they do give us some sort of epic vault system like the one I've pointed to, there will still be people who are unsatisfied. However, I wager the numbers of those unsatisfied would pale in comparison to what would be a large majority of players singing praise.

  • I agree with everything this handsome gentleman proposes. Clearly this update is no more than a bandaid ontop of a gaping wound.

    • Fantastic post! Hopefully between the two of us, we'll shake some sense into these people. I'm still in disbelief that this was the grand unveiling of a solution that took them 7 months to build. What a let down...

Well though I agree with you're rant what you I and everyone has to look at is one thing. Xbox 360 has 512mb of memory xbone has 8gigs I believe. This game has entirely been hamstrung by the last gen systems. Bungie can only do so much when the systems can only handle so much. I have been complaining I feel like since day one. So this is a bit humbling but it's not all bungies fault. It is but it isn't. Had this game been xbone and ps4 only the game would have been a lot more than what it is. But since everything has to be done to accommodate the last gen systems the game falls very short of what we wanted. EDIT: just wanted to get the numbers right. Xbox 360 has 512mb of video memory PS3 has 256mb Xbone has 8 gigs but only 5 gigs for games PS4 has 8 gigs

          • Let's hijack Bungie's intellectual property and make a modded version of Destiny that doesn't blow nutbags. We can go non-profit and raise funding for servers.

          • My take on the "Vault Space Problem": it never would've been a problem if you could access it from your character menu screen from launch. Just saying.

                  • i am a programmer, and what they're saying about limitations is rubbish, a paging mechanism would negate this, but would require big changes across a lot of components, so they're going for a quick and easy fix instead

                    • They need to make more space in the vault. They need to add a page that lets you select, Armor, Weapons or Materials and then open an 84 (6x14) area to drop your items in each one. It's a bit hard to explain.

                      • AWESOME! but that still cant happen because what they were saying it the vault can only store so much data not as in tiles but as in whats behind those tiles but if you combined your UI changes with my solution for multiple vaults (linked) that may work

                        • Good post. I don't believe the increased vault dimensions of 4/16/4 will last. Especially with the addition of new weapons and armor in House of Wolves. I have three character's and two of them were created to act as additions to my vault space. Like yourself I'm not proficient with video game programming but this problem has been here since October. This is a problem and I had believed that the competent people at Bungie would be able to fix a problem.

                          • Bump. I am like you, I actually have had to delete fully leveled Armor pieces just to prevent running out of room completely.... Oh I guess that means I DID run out of room completely. I was hoping for some form of paging, or at least removing the ships/shaders/emblems from the status as items and the need to take up inventory space.

                              • Seems to me if they just add a second page to each of the 3 like with out friends lists, would double the space and same amount of items would be loaded at all times on screen seems to me that would avoid the issue they claim to have of too many on screen at once. Im not a programmer by any means but that seems feasible to me nonetheless

                                    • Honestly It just laughable and we are suppose to get that much space and we haven't even gotten into comet , vex and forge of the gods It really is a temporary band aid so much we also getting all raid gear upgrades soon to, Your right on target with the whole bit but understand this time there doing that till getting a real vault wont happen because it bungie they wanted it this way and it annoying as it is. If bungie is listening to this Yes you can make should they do it (Yes absolutely) It will keep it would make real statement of the game that it want to stay alive and flourish then slapping it customers in there face and push people away from it . Don't tell me it not possible because i seen cleaner games with vaults or store spaces really much greater then this.

                                    • Perhaps this is a holdover while they totally rework the vault system? While I like the update, it just feels like a placeholder to me.

                                      • If too much space was a bug or glitch in the game, it would've been fixed already. Vault space, and you're correct, has been a topic of discussion from the start. It's hard to fathom how this couldn't have been more thought out, seeing as they knew how much gear they were putting into this game.
