Theory: What are the Ghosts?

(I'm not sure if anyone has discussed this topic before, let me know if it has, thanks!) The Traveler is a mysterious and incredible being, but what about his creations, the Ghosts, our little helpful guides that have their own little personalities (disclaimer: Although essentially each one of ghosts that every player has is the same, it's only in correlation with the story missions and interactions, kinda like how each and every one of us has destroyed the heart of the black garden, anyways..) what about them? Who are they really? Hyper-intelligent beings created directly from the traveler? Or something more...my theory is that the Ghosts are actually those who have died in the collapse, well some of them anyway. I believe that during "The Great Battle" the traveler decided to do one of the only other things he could do, bring those who have perished back to life. But, because the Traveler was so crippled, it couldn't fully fulfill this act, so instead he used the "souls" or "essence" of the dead to create the Ghosts, encasing a part of their consciousness into a contraption of technology, and gave them one purpose, to find those who can use the travelers light as a weapon against the darkness. My Evidence: 1. It's in the Name! Our little floating friends are called "ghosts" why? They certainly don't look like a ghost or spirit, Bungie has hidden their identity in plain sight. They are the "Ghosts" of the deceased who have risen to aid the guardians. 2. The Archive In the mission on Venus when you must break into the Ishtar Coleectives archive, our Ghost friend kindly opens the door by projecting his magical light on a console with a hand print identification pad. Soon after you enter the Archive the AI greets a "Doctor Shin" (unsure if that is the correct spelling) and our Ghost friend seems to almost recognize the name, then says "Never mind that" almost as if he was hiding something, or he wanted to focus on the mission, and not the fact that the AI said a name that triggered a possible surpressed memory (I have various mini theories, that's only one example). 3. The Grimoire "It is a place, a place casting shadows and emotion. It's a real place, I know. One hot blue sun, say. And other suns too. Five? I like seven better. What I'm recalling is a giant star with a family of six smaller suns, and you could spend days and nights counting all of the planets circling those suns...except there are no planets. Not anymore. The powers in charge have carved up all of the worlds, and maybe a brown dwarf or two for good measure. With that rubble, they fashioned a topologically creative enclosure, a twisting of space and time sealed behind doors that admit only those who know the magic words. The bones of a hundred planets have been cut smooth and laid out like a floor, a polished and lovely floor creating vast living spaces. A floor bigger than ten thousand worlds, catching the fierce glory of the seven suns. For light, for food. For beauty. And nothing escapes. Not heat, not gravity. Not even the faintest proud sound. It could be anywhere. It can live in the cold between galaxies, or folded up inside matter, near enough to touch right now... I remember it and maybe it's exactly as I describe it. Seven suns wrapped inside magic. Or it's something else entirely, perhaps. A place still fat with life. An abundance of sentient souls, some decent, maybe a few of lesser quality, and everybody stands about or floats about, or they bounce between dimensions. The point is that the residents of this hidden realm live inside a bottle so perfectly hidden that they can't see beyond their own borders. Which shapes a mind in very specific ways. But, Beyond is their name for a mysterious, doubtful realm that they can't see. Which is us, of course. " Above is a description of a Ghost fragment from a Grimoire card. It seems to discuss a complex world filled with other beings. I believe that this is where the consciousness of the deceased resided before becoming Ghosts, a world that is more intricate than the Traveler itself, or perhaps this is the traveler, perhaps the traveler gathered the souls of the dead and kept them inside itself, sheltering them, or using them, and eventually changing them into the Ghosts. I hope my theory is understandable, please feel free to provide feedback and ideas, thanks! And please KillWorthy let me know what you think of my theory, it would be greatly appreciated.

  • I'm inclined to believe you just from pointing out the fact they're called Ghosts. Everything else in the Destiny universe is aptly named in the same manner. The Traveler is the thing that travels. The dark enemy is the Darkness. The Guardians guard the city. The Exo Stranger is actually an Exo stranger. Why wouldn't Ghosts be ghosts? Maybe the Ghosts are lost souls, and they have to go find their own body to reanimate it and fight alongside it. That could be why they are linked, and each Ghost has to find the right Guardian. But then, why did the Speaker say he hopes the Ghost chose wisely if the Ghost only had one choice to make. Hmmmm.... Ok, that might not pan out. At any rate, the Ghost may be imparting its own consciousness into the Guardian, just to reanimate a fighter that can protect, or be the Ghost's Guardian while the Ghost does the work of the Traveler.

    • Could explain a lot. Perhaps that is why he made the shells that are used to house the ghosts.

    • You make some good points and I like your theory. I found 2 holes in your theory. 1 in one of the cut seens during the campaign either the speaker or your ghost says that the traveler forged him (the ghost) from its light with its dying breath. 2 when you are running around the tower or on missions/patrol you can find dead ghosts and revive them.how are we as gardians supposed to revive the souls of lond dead people?

There is a theory running around that Rasputin sacrificed a good portion of the Human race by turning them into a last ditch "light weapon" against the darkness that resulted in the collapse. This weapon could actually be the Ghosts. But it's the Traveler that created the Ghosts right? Well... There's another theory going around that states that Rasputin and the other Warminds contain fragments of the Traveler and are in direct communication with it. So the Traveler and Warminds are one in the same. There's a Grimoire card that could go along well with this. Ghost Fragment: Titan talks about a Ghost flitting by a group of Titans looking for the Warmind Charlemagne on Mars. The Ghost seems dazed and is muttering an Old Earth language, quite possibly Russian? We know Rasputin has taken control of the Warmind on Mars after completing the Clovis Bray mission. So this Ghost is possibly under the influence of Rasputin yet still connected to the Traveler. What if Rasputin's sacrifice of Human lives to a 'light weapon' is the Traveler's creation of the Ghosts, and in turn the Guardians it raises? You're on to something that the Ghosts are the soul/mind fragments of their former human selves.

      • I believe that ghosts are containers for human souls, finding the corpse and resurrecting it by suppling extra energy to the body, the description for the first warlock class item, potential bond tells us that it supports life and a bit more, and the armour description shows that it was created by your ghost, my evidence is valid as in the beginning of the game, you are reawakened by your ghost, the traveller doesn't have the power to reach that far, so he built the ghost, how else was he going to build an army?
