Sleeping in total darkness.

I find that the only comforting way for me to fall asleep is for there to be no light at all and to hear the sound of my ceiling fan and humidifier. When I was younger, even as a teenager, I felt like my house was "haunted". I couldn't go to sleep unless my bedroom door was wide opened, a nightlight on (yes, a nightlight) and music playing. Now that I'm older, married and a parent, I've realized that I still need that sound (at least a fan) but I want it pitch black. Perhaps I feel more comfortable in the dark because I'm not alone. I also, more times than not, fall asleep while softly rubbing my feet together. Weird, I know. What about you? What's comfortable to you when trying to fall asleep? What are your before sleeping habits?

  • Bedroom door closed. Window open(above the front door entrance) so I can hear if anyone's trying to break in. Gun under my pillow. My dog usually lays her head on top of my chest. Weird routine but I feel safe and I usually end up falling asleep once I hear my dog snoring. Funny thing is once my dog wakes up and stares out the window I end up waking up as well and I listen for any noise. Once she lays her head back down I end up falling asleep again.

Also, am I the only one around here who folds under the bottom corner of the blanket to make a little foot poncho for their footsies to nuzzle in? Cuz I gotta tell ya, it's spectacular.

    • I used to be afraid of the dark and would have to have the hallway light on and my door open to fall asleep. Now I'm the total opposite. I can't sleep unless it's pitch black and there's no sound. Even small amounts of light, like the light of an adapter can keep me from falling asleep if it's bright enough. Same for sound. The only exception being my ceiling fan which I've adjusted to.

    • Well I would sleep in total darkness but my alarm clock's display illuminates the room.

I leave the door to my room open when I sleep. It's mostly so the cat can go use her litter box (which is hidden away in the living room) and come back to bed. She sleeps at the foot of the bed and it's awesome. I have some LED lights behind my TV in the living room and they're set to transition/fade at night so I can see that faint glow from my bed. It doesn't really bother me. Sometimes I fall asleep with my bedroom TV on but more often than not, I sleep in silence.

        • I have a Lasko fan that's been my sleep background noise since I started college. I think this thing's been on since I got it in 2009, except for when I've moved.

I do that feet thing, also play withy hair as I fall asleep, and I'm a grown ass man. I can't sleep without a breeze, even In the dead of winter I need the window open. I put it back to my days in the army. Cold room, warm bed. Edit - listening to the rain always puts me into the most restful of sleeps..especially if it's chucking it down.

            • Complete darkness and silence are my two best friends at night, at least ordinarily. It's actually sort of funny, because I used to be absolutely terrified of the dark when I was a child, for quite some time I literally kept the light in my room on while I went to sleep. Not a nightlight, an ordinary lamp. I have no idea how I was able to do that now, honestly. I can't sleep in a well-lit room, even when the sun first starts coming up and the faintest of its rays start slipping through the window between the shutters in the morning, it keeps me awake if I'm awake already.

              • Yo Cam, I HATE all the light in my room from electronics but Mrs Shack never remembers to turn off the Comcast receiver. I can deal with it, though. If I'm not dead tired, I have to fall asleep with my in-ear headphones in and a familiar movie playing at low volume. Something about the familiar dialogue lulls me to sleep. I fall asleep to Aliens... a LOT.
Shhh, sometimes I rub my feet together, too >.>
• Due to siblings I can't sleep with any doors opened. I have a lock on my bedroom door and usually have it locked when I sleep. I can sleep with both light or darkness. I usually have my fan on to create white noise. The times I sleep with a light on are due to my overactive imagination. Because of my overactive imagination I can't watch horror movies or play horror genre games before bed.
