You get a commendation for each rank 3+. You need to have a commendation to buy chest or head armor and any weapon. You spend the commendation buying one of these items and you must then rank up the faction again to buy another item.
Commendations can be transferred between characters so if you are later gearing up an alt you can send them over from your main to help out.

So pretty much i have to play weeks worth of vanguard and bounties just to get 1 freaking piece of legendary armor?? Thats extremely obnoxious. I hope bungie knows that most people play this game as a small part of their life and that it actually isnt their life.

Well, no, just for chest or head armor. Arms and boots are just straight up 75 marks each. So you get those first, keep grinding bounties, and then by the time you have the 75 marks for the chest you should have a commendation already, and then the second commendation in time to buy the helmet. Honestly if you just keep playing the game you'll have more Vanguard commendations than you know what to do with. And while I understand that many people have busy lives and can't afford to sink that kind of time into a game, that might just mean that Destiny isn't for you. Which is fine. There's tons if games that you can pick from where you can make progress here and there and not have it feel like a treadmill.

Edited by ChillyPaper074: 2/23/2015 1:15:22 PMyup. it sucks. i just bought 1 weapon using crucible marks... to buy another i have to play 60 crucible matches (win 30 lose 30) just to get enough to purchase a weapon... ridiculous. As you can see, just as obnoxious for crucible gear.
