I can't remember where I read it but it stated that when you find an engram that RNG has already picked what it is and that going on the cryptarch simply shows you what it is. So what your going to get is already decided before the cryptarch decrypts it. Not sure how true that is but it kinda makes sense seeing that you can't save them for after the update.

Yup. Engrams are decided on drop not on "decode".

So how do the blue engrams know how to change class when you pass them to a different character?
-
Maybe they have an item coded for each class and it changes to it depending on which character you use. I don't really have an answer for you.

Seems a lot more complicated than having original engrams and post-hotfix engrams that are all identical and get converted by the Cryptarch. I think I'll horde some engrams for science.

I didn't say it was true I just remember reading that.
