Yes, I know that they will come out with DLCs. However, it certainly IS cheaper to support the material that they released in the original launch, with fewer features.
It's like this: Let's say I have a program with 100 features that I could sell for $100. That's 100 features that I have to support, for all of the users, using all of the income I make from the sales. That support costs work and effort (money), as you have correctly stated.
However, if the Product Manager (which could be one person, or maybe a small team) realizes that the product could be sold with only 50 features for $100, and then they reduce the number of features down to 50, that's a BIG reduction in the amount of support. That's immediately cheaper for the company. Winner for them. They will make even more profit if they sell the remaining 50 features for more money as add-ons (DLCs).
I [u]guarantee [/u]you that Destiny has a Product Manager (or team) at Activision. It is also certain that they went through a release-review, in which they decided which features would stay and which would go.
What features did they remove from the launch? Only Bungie and Activision know for sure. But the pre-launch announcements, interviews, and videos showed more story and additional core features such as character customization and a trading system. Bungie reps were demonstrating these things and bragging about them proudly in public. Then, the development history for Destiny seems to indicate that these features got cut as they came within a year of release.
So, yeah, it seems that they chopped features to cut their costs.
