It makes your salivary glands produce excess spit. If you held it in, you're entire mouth would fill up. You don't swallow it because it would probably hurt your stomach and make you vomit. Some kinds may have a good taste. But swallowing it is not a good idea.

No. Not at all. Sort of spearmint-ish. It's not a minty taste though. I can't think of anything to describe how it tastes though.

Maybe like menthol? We have menthol cigs here and they're a bit like smoking toothpaste :)

It just depends. Some wintergreen things do have mint flavor. Like gum. I do know that wintergreen is not actually meant. It has mint flavoring a but it's not from the biological Mentha family. No mint oils in it.
