IGN slams Destiny and TDB

http://m.ign.com/articles/2014/12/18/destiny-the-dark-below-review Hear that Deej, Bungie... That silence is the sound of shrinking market share. I can only assume investors are already jumping ship. If that happens, or is happening, what happens to that $500 mil budget dedicated to the Destiny franchise. I guess the angry voices do indeed outweigh the fandoys you were hoping could save a sinking ship. Edit: So I've sat back after posting this to watch the waters churn. I'm impressed with the feedback, but I'm not shocked this thread got a lot of attention, positive or negative. People can bash me, the article, or the game as much as they like...point is, I didn't post it to start an argument! I posted it more or less as PSA...in the hopes the attention this thread MIGHT receive gains the attention of someone we've ALL been longing to hear from. Keep the chatter"white" coming y'all.

  • I think if the base game launched with all the dark below content and more story sequences this game would have scored 9s on sites like ign despite the grindy nature.

  • Not just IGN. All major outlets point to the same issues that have already been discussed here also.

  • You know it's bad when you look back and think for all its faults defiance did a better job on last gen machines. In no way was defiance a great game but story and length and a few of the things they put into the game are so much better than what bungie did. My opinion anyway.

    • i agree that the game is deeply flawed and caters to a certain type of gamer but c'mon. ign also gives cod a glowing review every year. cod ghosts with a blowjo--i mean a great review? i call shenanigans. tl;dr: destiny is -blam!-ed in so many ways but i still like it over cod.

$500 mil budget dedicated to the Destiny franchise Another kid who has no idea about the budget. It is for the Destiny franchise, as you said. It is not for "Destiny 1". It is the budget (+++ what they earned now and in the future ) for Destiny 1 Destiny 2 Destiny 3

      • IGN is right about a lot of things in their review. I like Destiny a lot, but Bungie made mistakes with the DLC. I think they focused too much on ways to make the players grind rather than create interesting content. It feels like a lot of man hours were put into deciding logistics of how to create currency sinks rather than working towards a more cohesive story-line. Don't get me wrong, the raid is pretty fun; the story missions were actually good too (the first time around); there's just not enough of it. I actually didn't mind visiting the same areas over because omnigul was a fun enemy to chase around. Why couldn't they create more content like that? More evil villains that we could vanquish to really feel like a hero. Beating Omnigul was sweet; killing Crota felt like an achievement, Other than those two things, there wasn't a lot of creative things added (other than the weird ways to upgrade your gear). I think most people would've been okay if they kept cap at lvl 30, and didn't worry about adding new currency. Heck, I think people would've been okay without new vanguard armor or the new damage max for weapons, IF they had just added more story missions that told more of the story. Seems like a lot of effort was put into finding ways to "keep players interested" by tedious, repetitive bounties and work, just to level up for the sake of levelling up. Plus, once you hit max, there's no real benefit once the new DLC hits again. There's no stat bonuses for having a full raid set that leads you into the next chapter of the game. Being 31 doesn't make you more powerful in anything other than the new raid - meaning the grind is really pointless if you aren't planning to raid. Unfortunately, a lot of people have realized this and have stopped logging in.. My friends list, once abundant with destiny players, seem to be thinning out. I don't blame them, and I understand why they left. I'm sticking around because... well maybe because I'm optimistic about this game... or maybe I'm just naive.

        • Whatever comes out of IGN treat it as if it has a tonne of salt added on top of it. They crave attention and are willing to talk badly about any game just so they can get more hits on there articles. Here's a thought: Make up your own mind about Destiny. If you don't like it then leave. If you like it stay. If you can't decide then stay in limbo :)

        • Anything ign, game spot or cnet post is usually a long the lines of what they've read on forums, your the product there trying to make money your not the consumer, just food for thought - wod for example has a goodish reception that will get a good write up

        • Basically, people imagined the commercials would be what the game is, and then call Bungie liars because of their own misunderstanding. I bet they also bought card games as a kid and were disappointed MAGIC didn't happen like in the commercials for playing card games. It had a disappointing narrative structure, that was about its only failing, it's still fun as shit, and addicting, everything a game of its type should be. There are games with great stories, that last me 20 hours before I'm completely done and have no need to come back, which is good an all, but this isn't that kind of game, this is one that has given me 250+ hours of playtime, easily more for my. money than I should expect. This one balances how fast you can level things up (if everything was maxed right when you got it you would lose one of the main reasons to come back, it's balanced in a way that makes it so you are always working towards a goal, you're always looking forward to leveling up the next weapon), on the side of doing weekly stuff to get more stuff, and playing crucible (which is a blast, it's always fun to try out new weapon combinations and new subclass setups etc., wish they had more game modes though). If it's not your type of game, then it's not your type of game, you misunderstanding what it is is your own failing, and frankly it's pathetic how many people instantly try to blame everyone but themselves in what can only be described as a childish temper tantrum.

        • It's plain to see that the truly talented Bungie members either left or were fired. Those running Bungie now put screwing over their players as their biggest priority. No Story, No Vision, Lies upon Lies as to how Expansive, Mysterious and Enthralling Destiny would be. Destiny has a Mad-Lib produced plot, Brain Dead Enemy AI, Zero Surprises, just Endless Repetition. It has the most Boring and Dead game worlds ever encountered. What a GD waste. No way is Destiny gonna last 10 years in this appalling state! I'd say Destiny 2 actually getting made is a long-shot. Players have good reason to feel betrayed and let down by Destiny. Bungies former stellar reputation has been demolished, never again will pre-order or buy a Bungie game without giving reviewers time to find out how awful it is.

          • I can understand many of you saying IGN is not exactly reliable or accurate in its reviews etc, but having read the article I'm afraid I can't generally disagree with whats written in the main, ok comments like "the lack of matchmaking for the raid" does not sit well with me as I feel there should not be matchmaking in the raid, or at least I did when it was only VoG. I may differ in that opinion when it comes to TDB as this feels more like a strike than a raid. Most of the content, review or comments by IGN is pretty much what Destiny is and what Bungie are producing. I fail to see it any other way sadly :( The sad fact is, us gamers who have invested heavily into Destiny will in the main say they enjoy the game or hate the game. Either way we are more qualified to give the best reviews IMO, but! and its a crushing but, for new comers reading reviews like the one produced by IGN, its enough to think nauh I'll not bother with this game and promptly put it back on the shelf and that not only effects Bungie but us gamers as well. Bungie are no doubt losing new blood and who is to blame? IGN or other branches who do reviews? I say no, Bungie are the makers of there own demise sadly :( Its really down to them now, make it right or bust.

          • They're talking smack about not being able to find a group without matchmaking. For reals? Destinylfg.com or .net? These guys obviously play the game once when it comes out and then once when the dlc hits. Let someone who actually plays the game on a daily basis do the review, not some idiot whose job is to pump out 650ish words and go back into his cave.

            • A 100% roll based game is really destroying it's Rep. They need to fix that. People are getting sick of being good and having nothing to show for it, seeing worse players get extremely lucky. I know that's how you create an inclusive, children's game, but what is the majority of the player base? I wouldn't say 14 year olds... Peiple want a vast, unique, and rewarding experience. Destiny provides none of any.
