Welcome to MMORPGs

/**** edit Wow, this is clearly heated. I apologize if I can't respond to everyone, but I'm trying my best! I also appreciate all the constructive conversation and debate! ****/ New content making old content irrelevant has been around since the dawn of MMOs. I'm personally ecstatic that I have an option to bring my current gear up to new patch gear level. THANK GOD Bungie is doing this. Do you know how many times I've had to bank gear in games as a nostalgic waste of space because of gear progression? The fact that Bungie is allowing this is GREAT! My "MMORPG" history:
Since some of you seemed interested: I started with MUDs in the early 90s (anyone ever play GemStone? I LOVED that one), progressed in to Ultima Online, then was there and played at the launch of EQ. Few years later, I jumped ship to Asheron's Call for a very brief time, then Dark Age of Camelot. That's where it died down a bit, UNTIL EQ2 and WoW launched, where I played both and finally just recently stopped playing FF14: A Realm Reborn (WAR/WHM/SCH represent!!) You can pepper in all sorts of RPGs and FPSs in between and during, it's a robust history. /**** edit 2 I forgot GW/GW2 and Anarchy Online Credit to MithBesler and Poltron for reminding me! ****/ /**** edit 4 And just remembered Age of Conan and Aion! Credit to o The Bishop o for reminding me! ****/ /**** edit 3 My gaming "life" started when I was 5 on NES with duck hunt. I was a console gamer until we got our first 75mhz Gateway computer and connected to AOL on a 14.4k modem to play my MUDs. I continued my console gaming "career" on SNES, genesis, n64 and then GameCube and PS1. That's where I tapered off my console gaming until Xbox 360 came out, where I gave up PC gaming until about 2 years ago. You could name most games and, if I know of it, I probably tested it, played it, or hated it. ****/ None of this really matters unless you trust it, but hopefully it puts weight to my next comment.
A closer look at my perception of what an "MMORPG" is:
"MMORPGs" obviously have a clear cut definition. If you were to follow that to the 'T', then I suppose Destiny wouldn't 100% fit the bill. However, Destiny falls very closely in the realm of all tried and true MMORPGs that we have grown to know and love. That's what defines this game, to me, as an MMORPG.
My comparison from PeetSquared's post;
It's the attribute that I'm comparing here. New content releasing and making old gear obsolete is irritating and archaic. What I'm insinuating is that Bungie is on the right path and doing is ALL a favor by allowing us to upgrade our current exotics to the next level. Someone with our experience, as it appears you know where I'm coming from, we know how annoying it is to have to replace old gear. We have sunk hours upon hours in to our avatars and their trinkets, working on what we perceive to be perfect; only in a matter of months or days do we see it all ripped away and replaced by the next "green" that drops. This is a perfectly viable solution to avoiding the feeling of loss and I commend Bungie for it. It's not like we're losing anything, they're just making what we have better. Do you really want to have your Hard Light replaced by a green auto rifle? No! You want it to grow with you in a new experience! It's not about time frame, content comes when it comes. Look at FF14: A Realm Reborn. That game was STARVING for content, they couldn't push it out fast enough (I can't speak for it currently as I stopped somewhere around April) I played that for about 6 months and experienced 3 content patches that rendered everything I did previously useless (I was an end game raider). Annoying! I would have loved to see all of my previous gear be able to "ascend" further. The comparison here comes from years of my own personal gaming history and the experiences I've had, compiled with the perception that I've acquired of what an "MMORPG" is (what it has to offer, it's content, how it's delivered) to me. I've previously annotated that Destiny does not fit the literal definition of MMORPG, but the game offers up enough to fall in the same family. What everyone in this community is experiencing is a boon, despite that they can't see that, and those of us from a long standing history of progressive content can understand.
• I am so sick of idiots calling this game a mmorpg when it is a convenient defense for garbage decisions being made. Then when people raise questions about why this game is missing many of the staple conventions of a mmorpg, the same morons say adamantly that this is not a mmorpg. As far as I can tell they only chose the very worse aspects of mmorpg (rng, grind, etc..)to implement and left the most important ones (guilds, socialization, community) out completely or half done. You can't have it both ways, it either is a mmorpg or it is not. According to bungie it is not. Please stop the defense of bad decisions by mis-classifying the game.

    • You're an idiot. Plain and simple. MMORPG are about progression. You don't take away progress made. Experienced MMO game developers know this. Bungie is a staff of noobs and should have done their homework. And especially only 3 months after vanilla release of the game. You don't take away progress made, hours invested. I've put in over 900 hours (X1 compare me) in this game across three characters with over 20 exotics. Unless you have that much time invested and exotics accumulated, you can't grasp how this announcement impacts a player. My recent mmo history. WoW 2004 - 2012. City of Heroes/Villians 2004-2007. Lineage 2 2006-2008. Numerous RPGs including Diablo since version 1. Point here is, I know MMOs and I know what we SHOULD expect with the work we put into a game. Bungie screwed up and will lose lots of the player base because of it.

        • Hmm, OP...what mmo games used a small dlc to reset progress, a mere 3 months after its initial release? Quit trying to make an offbase comparison.

              • I hear a lot of haters saying Destiny is not an MMO, but I haven't heard a single reason WHY it isn't an MMO. You guys just say it isn't without giving a single example as to why it isn't. Lets hear some, because from my experience of playing MMO's for at least 10-15 years and playing WoW since vanilla, I can say that Destiny is a MMO style game.

                • MMOs don't usually make the grind so unappealing. They make it feel like progress. Bungie simply introduces the feeling of regress. It would have made more sense simply to increase the damage upgrades and add a perk to the current exotic trees to bring them up to the 'next level' of game play ... Don't get why they didn't do it tbh.

                • Destiny is an MMO style game. It's not a pure MMO like WoW, but it's pretty similar. Calling it straight out as not an MMO is easy to do when you're blinded by hatred. There are many similarities between real MMO's and destiny.

                  • Destiny barely has any mmorpg mechanics. My mmorpg experience Runes of magic, Tera rising, perfect world, neverwinter, wow, rift, guild wars, aion and the list could go on. I could go in depth but deff. Don't feel like it. Point being Destiny is barely consondered an mmo. They don't even consider thereself an Mmo. There doing there own thing. Js

                      Ok you're a Bungie plant or a Bungie Fluffer I don't care either way. This is not a mmo or mmorpg this is a shooter Bungie has stated this numerous times. The new weapons you say you're excited to get are the same weapons you have now with higher attack maybe new paint. BUNGIE never expected to bring attack rating over 300 this is a BS ploy, legendary gear is not rare or uncommon gear it's legendary only to be replaced by raid legendary but not for everyone or there would be raid matchmaking. This is to slow progression introducing new currency and the Cryptarch. Now to upgrade or buy new equipment there are more BS steps. So now you're going to say like Bungie did you don't have to upgrade but yes you do if you want to be competitive in IB,trials of Osiris,story and strikes. This is the trickery tactics you only see here.

                      The game shouldn't even be classified as an MMO. It's not massive at all with up to 6 players in a fireteam and 12 in PvP. Don't get me wrong, I love the game, it's just that people talk like every single MMO must take the same path of development. That's like saying every chick must have ear rings to be considered a female. LOL
I know, stupid example
Ok so 1st i have to say that i agree with the fact that it's cool we can take old gear, BUT! 1. Exotics as exotics should be are the top tier items, why would they call these exotics and limit useage. Thats why these items will carry over and over on each dlc, why reset these every time?! 2. These upgrades are nice and neat but ic you count, there are overall 5 "upgrade dmg" nodes on every legendary+ lvl items. Why not just make these upgrades add extra nodes for tge wepon to reach its maximum potential. This would also solve the problem that now rises, if i have a 4th ice breaker which isnt upgraded at all, i could go to xur and upgrade it instantly to it st tier max rank. It would also solve the special perks being reset. 3. Its just that simple, instead of resetting the item just add more nodes making the final node cost an exotic shard. If its going to be implemented in any other way it would be stupid and unbalanced, ppl just stipped upgrading new exotics since they wil simply be able to do so in 1 go with the next upgrade. Like magic, i get a fresh item, spend shard and 7k glimmer and you get it maxed out 1st tier. If it would be as i and many other suggested, this would balance out everything! And would make every1 gappy since there would be no reset. EDIT: i forgot to add, destiny is NOT an mmo, its an FPS-RPG hybrid wich puts its main focus on online and coop. There is nothing Massive in destiny other then the emptie beautiful regions that are in it. 16 players per server, 3 per mission, 6 per raid. Not massive at all. Yet ppl keep comparing this to an mmo. DO NOT forget that the playerbase it attracts is more of the fps lovers then mmo lovers, and it shows in almost evey aspect of this game.
