So I'm kind of in a jam right now, I need a car. However, I'm a physics guy, I don't know anything about cars outside of the fact that buying a used one can end up real bad if the car has hidden problems.
I wanted to save up more, but because of a recently apparent situation, I need to get one soon, and I only have a spending ability of ~$6,000. I'm also looking for something good in the snow that's not too bad on gas.
Now I ask the gear heads of the flood, what are things I should be careful or watch for? I'm surfing on Craig's list right now and I don't know if I'll be in a pit of shit with some of these cars or happy as a priest at a Boy Scout convention.
Thanks for any help!

If you want something for snow I'd get something along the lines of an suv or a jeep, or a pathfinder. Parts are generally easy to find and they run forever. Stay away from ford explorers though.

Get a subaru outback. My uncle owns an 06, and damn is it fine. Durable, hasn't had many problems here in the frozen waste land Alberta becomes for the winter. Good on gas, and damn-
it's just swell mang
