Petitions on the Forums

Mr DeeJ in a recent bought of posts has addressed the language of "petition" and how it would seem that those at Bungie that read the forums are dismayed by the number of successful threads that brand themselves as petitions. If you were to look up the definition of petition in the dictionary you would find that a petition is a formally drawn request, often bearing the names of a number of those making the request, that is addressed to a person or group of persons in authority or power, soliciting some favor, right, mercy, or other benefit. Under this definition there is nothing harmful meant by using the term petition. In fact it is the most successful way of demonstrating a large amount of support within the community for a particular change. There are only so many people developing the game, while there are millions of those which play. There are a lot of things that the players experience that may not be as apparent in the scale of impact to those making changes. By unifying under an idea, those individuals can make themselves heard, when they might just as easily be lost in the noise. It is far more likely that an idea will spring to the top when people are "bumping", and far more likely to be taken seriously when you can see 400 responses instead of only 3, and a few likes. Especially when we know there are only a handful of those important players to pay attention to these forums, and a number of other information outlets which we have previously been informed. We're doing our best to help you help us, after all. Before I submit this to the forum, let it be known that this will not be known. It will be swallowed up into the background noise that is the turbulent Bungie.net forums. It does not have the catchiest title, or inspire a flame war. Just the ramblings of a single poster. Petitions are a good idea, especially for getting a community behind that good idea. Although a single person may have a good idea, it is wasted if it is never heard.
