It's still a business so I'd say a profitable alternative would be cross platform save data. Then the incentive to upgrade wouldn't be hindered by lost time on your characters. Just my two cents.

It's already cross platform save data, though people still want to upgrade just that most people can't just spend 400$ on a new system,
