Destiny, please be a success story!!

I picked up a copy of Destiny at midnight on September 9th and have been playing consistently ever since. From my first blue engram to my 10th time killing Atheon ( no – not pushing him off the edge  ), I have really enjoyed my experience as a guardian in the world of Destiny. Recently, I have been reading through the forums and have seen some great posts. Some are positive, a few of them are rants, others are filled with expletives, but they all have one thing in common. They are all very personal and emotional. This game has (for good or for bad) really struck a chord with millions of gamers. With that, I wanted to put my own two cents out there. Let me start out by saying that I really like the game and have spent so much time playing it that I feel guilty telling people when they ask me. Sure, it could have more content. I have “killed two enemies with a fusion rifle 20 times”, “earned 9000 experience without dying”, “melee killed 30 enemies without dying”, (you get the point), over and over and over and over. It’s starting to get a little monotonous, but the way I look at it is that I’ve put almost 300 hours into the game and at $60, that’s about 20 cents an hour. That’s a HUGE bargain! In fact, this is just about the most cost effective form of entertainment I do these days (A ticket to the movies is $10 - $5 per hour, going out to dinner is $25 - $12.50 an hour, heck – driving is more expensive, even with oil prices going down!). I really do like playing this game. I would love nothing more than for Destiny to flourish over the next ten years. That said, the current state of Destiny is that it’s a building block; it’s a great foundation that has been layed down, but needs to be built upon to succeed. I stated above, there are so many great things about this game. The purpose of this post is not to go over the great things; rather it is to let Bungie know what issues I have with the game in hopes that they can eventually be addressed. Here goes: Note: I am not a casual gamer and I mainly play PvE. These opinions are from the perspective of someone that has reached the end game and wants to continue further. These opinions will most likely differ from players who have not delved into the Vault of Glass numerous times, but please realize, those people, if they continue to play, will eventually get to the end game and perhaps feel the same way… 1) My biggest problem with Destiny is that the different character classes aren’t unique enough. I started out as a titan and was proud to be one. Eventually, after beating the Vault of Glass multiple times, I felt it was time to see the game through the eyes of a hunter. Guess what – Those eyes are the same as a titan. You run the same speed, you use the same weapons, you have the same accuracy, in fact – the only real difference is in an ability that you can use every minute or so…and I forget to use it anyways. The point is, it’s not really needed. It was a very sad realization when I came across this and it made me not even feel incentive for leveling up my alternate character (though - I did level it up to get the extra weeklys). What’s sad is that I can literally go into the Vault of Glass with a group and not care what any of their classes are. I don’t believe that’s what Bungie intended and it can be fixed, in the long term and in the short term. Long term – Make some unique abilities that actually matter. Maybe hunters can jump significantly higher than the others and can get to areas that others can’t get to. Maybe warlocks can raise the dead. Maybe titans can interact with specific objects on the battlefield. These are just examples off the top of my head. Also, you could change the toughness and speeds of different characters. Hunters could be fast and weak. Warlocks could have low shield, but the shield could regenerate really quickly, etc… Short term – Restrict certain weapons to certain classes. You don’t have to start restricting weapons that are currently out there. Why not create whole new weapons or weapon categories for each class like heavy machine guns for titans, or some kind of crossbow for a warlock, or heavy snipers for hunters…These are just some quick, off the cuff examples – the specific examples might not be great, but I think the idea of giving different weapons to different classes could help solve this problem. 2) Armor is all the same. When I pick up a legendary piece of armor, guess what I do with it…Yeah - I break it down. I absolutely hate that I can’t get excited when that purple armor show up on my screen after picking up a legendary engram. In fact, every time I see that purple engram drop off a slain dreg I pray that it’s a weapon and not an armor. I really want to, but I know that the only difference between one armor and another is that I can reload a hand cannon faster, or my super (which, as stated, I don’t really even need), can be used 4 seconds more often. Please make armor different enough so you are not stuck with the first purple armor you pick up for the rest of the game. Even exotic armors really aren’t that different. They make your abilities better, but I want them to drastically change something, like increase damage with weapons, or give new abilities. 3) Xur makes it far too easy to get exotic items. Now remember, I’m speaking from the perspective of someone who is at the end game content, so if you are newer to the game, you probably won’t share this opinion (which is totally fine). Anyways, I remember when I got ice breaker (exotic sniper rifle) from Valas Ta’Aurc during one of the weekly nightfalls. I was so PUMPED when this happened. I leveled it up and felt like I made a difference being in the Vault of Glass with my friends…Know where I’m going with this? Yup, you guessed it – two days later, Xur has it up for sale and now I can’t go anywhere without seeing that unique bullet trail coming from every guardian I pass. Please, this needs to be fixed and can be fixed in a few ways: -Make strange coins much much MUCH harder to come by. With the weekly heroic and the ability to do it three times, that’s 27 strange coins a week (for those of you that don’t know, if you bump the difficulty of the weekly heroic to level 28, you get 9 strange coins upon completion). -Have Xur only give exotics from a small subset of the overall number. I feel that Xur really needs to stop being so generous for the game to succeed. With the way it currently stands, the incentive is greatly reduced for people to find exotics because they know they can just go and pick one up from Zur over the weekend. Everyone is also (mainly) using the same weapons throughout the game, so there is less individuality in the community, which is the opposite of what Bungie promotes. 4) I will keep this one short and sweet. What happened to the storytelling? For Destiny 2 – Please have a story line and tell it in an enjoyable way (not through tedious grimoire cards that can only be read online). Ok, that’s it. To the community – Feel free to agree/disagree with what I’ve written. Let’s get our thoughts out there!
