So the factions are already a thing, what if they were consequential. What if your patrol missions were for the faction that you choose to be a part of? What if doing those missions had an actual effect on the strength of your faction, and weakend the others? What if the players had a constant universal battle of trying to make their faction dominant? And what if, periodically, the devs did something, like inserted a story twist, or landscape change, etc. based on the dominant faction at the time.
Or, one step farther (and just a pipe dream). A faction vs. faction map, with strongholds, and very difficult to take control points. And it could have massive amounts of players battling, representing their faction, to hold as much land, or towers, etc. as possible. Similar to world vs. world in other MMO's.
Any of these, would give a more long term tension to the game, and would be a huge draw, as well as community building experience. Right now, the community only faces a small sample of eachother for about 15 minutes, then you reset what you have done, and play another match. But a long term, entire community based struggle... Now that would be epic.
Which faction would you represent?
[edit] what type of faction specific things would you like to see? I.e. guild halls? Lets here ideas!
[edit] thanks everyone for so much support on this, it's obvious that something like this is what the community wants and craves. So I am adding this extra edit to ask deej to let us, the community know that he has read this, and taken any ideas thoughts and discussions to the bungie team. With all the rallying around this idea, and the great thoughts that have been added below, I think we would feel comfort to know that our pleas are not going against deaf ears.

This would be cool. Now let me get back to my drink in the Dead Orbit lounge.
-
I mentioned this a long time ago but it was buried by people whining and complaining.
-
And one the Faction vs Faction map the rewards at the end would be armor and weapons from your faction
-
That was supposedly meant to be part of the game to begin with. Then as with everything else bungie thought it was too complicated for the younger audience they wanted to sell to so they scrapped it for the idea of more money
-
Bump :)
-
You Dead Orbit heathens will perish at the end of my blade!
-
I bet the agent of the nine has his own faction going. I'm going with him, who knows? Next thing you know agents are everywhere and all of a sudden you earn rankings from it.
-
FWC ALL THE WAY. look at my avatar
-
Bump! New Monarchy
-
Bump!

Good idea, but what about the guys loyal to the vanguard? Where do they come in? I thought about doing the factions, but i like my vanguard (crucible) ranking. Im not a big fan of the factions. So would the Vanguard be the score keepers, or the tie breakers? The Vanguard might as well be the guys who keep the balance.
-
Also what about the people who are highly ranked in all factions???

Edited by JerkSeason: 11/19/2014 4:53:06 PMone faction shader available at level 5 others at 10 (like they are atm), one faction per toon, faction guns not in legendary engrams for "outsiders", faction specific missions or storylines and maps for pvp like dead orbit players attacking new monarchy stronghold salvage style but with longer timers for captures or hacks on enemy tech, faction support spend marks on backup npcs for pve situations(short duration and after reaching high rank like 5 or so), level 30 armor for sale at rank 15 or higher, faction exotics and some background info (lore) on the factions

Love it
-
I love it. The factions should absolutely have some bearing on the game and the player experience other than some gear.
-
Agreed. I saw another post that suggested out in the field faction outposts that you could only enter if you were high enough rank. In there there would be special merchants and special bounty trackers that would have faction specific bounties. It sounds really cool to me.
-
Wow we need this so much.
-
This. Right here! Bump.
-
I wouldn't mind having a faction ship and the ability to have Faction vs. Faction in crucible. THAT IS KINDA WHAT THE FACTIONS ARE SUPPOSED TO DO!
-
This is something I really wanted Destiny to have in the past, please bungie... Make this happen. We need something ware we can do big things with large amounts of guardians.
