Q: When it comes to strikes, you're a _______. But I'm "both". There is no option for me!
Assume you have all the time in the world and you're soloing if you're "in the middle or both." This will help you identify what you really PREFER. Certainly, when faced with a time crunch but really want to play, we'll change out tactics from our true desires. However, with unlimited time, we'd be more likely to do what we WANT. Edit: there is no "Both" option. I want you to pick a side and defend it. Certainly there are a ton of us (myself included) that play to the rest of the group. But base your decision on soloing. Don't take the middle ground. That's too easy :P
Why there is no RIGHT answer:
I'd recommend the book Switch by Chip and Dan Heath. Arguing logic doesn't work. You have to motivate the emotional side of an individual to make it really work (in conjunction with logic). Your logic is sound, but you haven't targeted the reason people walk/shoot (completionist) every strike. Some people are just plain having fun. If you could show someone how much more fun it is to run vice walk, you'd swing the community. Unfortunately, that must be felt and experienced. The written word (here) will most likely only apply to logic (unless you're an incredible writer). Logic is just not a strong enough element to do it alone.
Concerning the term: "Efficient" and why it's not an option on my poll.
Most runners are running because of time efficiency. That's probably the right title depending on your operational definition of efficient. One size does not fit all here. "Efficient" is defined by the measurement: Efficient completionists aren't worried about time, but kills instead... Not skipping any enemies. 100% encountered enemies die at their hands. Efficient runners are looking for personal records on strike TIME completion. "Gotta shave 30 seconds off. Skip the stupid colossus and just run by it." It's all in the eye of the beholder. Use this weeks Weekly Heroic as an example. After you activate the console in the public area by the interceptors, do you: A) Fight every enemy in the first big interior chamber and then continue on, also killing every enemy in front of the bosses siege tank (public area)? Efficient mob killer = completionist. Or B) Run and jump past those guys to get to the lieutenant fight (darkness zone), then run and jump to boss area? Efficient TIME completion = runner. Certainly there are those that want to split hairs and kill stuff while they're running through, but killing level 28 cabal majors and ultras takes some freaking time. If you're stopping to down all those dudes you're a completionists.
THIS POLL IS TO INCREASE AWARENESS This is the problem: People fall into 2 real categories. You either want the end of strike rewards only and time is of the essence, or you want to take the scenic route and kill everything on the way. Neither of these practices is bad!!!! Your brain and play style dictate what group you fall into. This does not mean the other group is wrong! They're just different. Understand this and stop taking it personally.
Idling is straight garbage. I don't care about the no-death strike bounties. Participate or get reported. Standing around farming materials and trash mobs also counts as idling no matter how you try to explain it.
So, which group to you fall into? I want this post to stick so everyone understands that there are 2 different schools of thought here and you should try to understand the majority. If 2 people sparrow off, they're runners. If you're a completionist, just quit, or speed ahead, help, and try your luck with a different group. If you sparrow up and the others walk towards the first mob, they obviously want to kill stuff. Quit, or hop off the sparrow and help. Of course no one is holding a gun to your head to be a team player, but team playing requires a "majority rules" mentality. Being the only runner makes you look like a jack ass. Sure, you soloed the boss. But your other 2 "team" members were left behind. It's not good etiquette. I say follow the crowd vice throwing a tantrum that someone isn't playing "your" way. Especially if you're the only one that wants to do it that way. Check left. Check right. Play as a team, OR DONT USE RANDOM MATCHMAKING AND GET MAD WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG! I'm a runner. Ran Sepkis Prime 25 times for Bad Juju, but slowed down when my team mates wanted to. Cheers guys. I did this in fun, but I hope it sticks. There are way too many hate threads about this.

    • Don't see how people like to kill the same mobs over and over. Runner for life.

    • I'd just like to add that you only see increased drop rates inside darkness zones. I normally skip "public" or Patrol area's on a strike and run straight into the darkness. I'll chew through the darkness and keep running until I hit the next zone or the boss. Every Legendary i've gotten in a strike has been a drop in a darkness zone or a completion reward.

    • For All the Runners, if you get up the stairs fast enough you can run past the precursors in the Undying Mind strike. Once you've run past them you just have to kill that giant spazzing cannon (I can't remember the name right now) and you can go straight to the Mind. This saves a good five minutes but you have to hurry, down the three or four Hydras in the beginning and gun it.

    • It usually just depends who I'm with. If I'm paired with runners I run. If not ill kill everything. I had an experience a couple days ago that was just shitty tho. When starting the valus roc strike the third guy immed went to orbit. Me and the other player went forward without him. Other guy starts running through to the first room so I'm like ok we can run this I'm down. He dies in the first room and I res him up. He starts running again. Get out to the area with the tank and I notice he picks up a vehicle. I just start getting in the zone killing stuff. I take down the first mini boss and I realize I just took him out myself and even tho random is on the map right on my sand spot he's not near me. I'm like I'd he killing stuff from the top of this master chief building? So I jump on top to see if its a good spot and low and behold the player is actually just sitting on the roof and not even moving shooting or anything. I'm stunned at this point as we are down a guy and he's just getting to areas and afk ing . I stood there for like 5 mins and the guy never stood up so I just went to orbit and started agn. Can't believe some of the terrible players out there

      • I run through the beginning parts with the normal world adds and usually fully complete killing the strike adds. Minus the open spot on archon priest with the harpies, I use my bike and buzz right by them everytime. Why do people feel they need to kill them?

        • It's ultimately more efficient to run more strikes and kill less stuff in them due to the rewards being heavily loaded in the end. Yes, you can get a legendary engram off trashmobs in a strike, but you're still better off going for completions for the reward at the end. I will however stop to kill stuff if it helps me complete something, which would be the grimoire. However, since I'm mostly done with grimoire stuff, that means that unless it's an ogre or a hydra and I don't have to kill it, I won't kill it. The true skill in running instances or strikes in MMOs lies in how efficiently you can do it. Back when I played WoW this basically meant that you'd skip everything you could and every time you could pull multiple packs of mobs simultaneously to make it faster, you would.

        • I like to just kill everything I was in a strike with two runners yesterday they both left me to fight through the mobs myself. One left when they realised I wasn't running through it with them and the other just went as far as he could and then had to wait on me. Made me take my time. Lol

        • Little bit of both, depends on the flow and my mood. If i'm with runners, I run more. If i'm with people who shoot every enemy, I shoot a bit more. I definitely never stop to shoot every dreg in the level. Generally, if it's blocking my path, it's going down.

        • I usually do strikes in a fireteam composed of myself, my dad, and a random. My dad and I have an agreement to let the third person decide whether we speedrun or pace it (basically we keep the random ahead of us as an indication that he/she is leading the way). While the two of us personally like the scenic run, we feel it's more important to not hold the third member back and we're willing to wait around a few minutes for anyone who idles. Other than that, I'm kind of average. I'll quickly kill anything in my general area and keep moving to the next checkpoint.

        • If I'm alone Im running for the guaranteed xp. Anything else is a plus. When w a group I conform but typically push the pace a little to maximize xp bc running w 2 friends shouldn't take long to kill everything and hustle in the strike. My one friend is always staring at his menu idle half the strike and drives me crazy. Contribute!

        • I AM both simply because when all in trying to do is finish a bounty, I want it done, if I'm doing strikes just for the sake of doing them for engrams and such, I take my time.

        • I haven't really sat around killing everything (save for solo runs) since the first play through on each character build. If the other two people want to clear an area I'll simply go to the cp, turn around and start shooting mobs until the team catches up. No big deal, i get it, every little bit of xp helps on that shiny new weapon you finally got to drop. I will however blow through wo teammates if i look at the clock and i lost track of time. Say I'm going through the devil's lair and I suddenly realize I've got 30 minutes before I have to leave to pick up my kids. I'm leaving you in the dust and getting the next cp rolling, I'm sorry.

Play as a team, OR DONT USE RANDOM MATCHMAKING AND GET MAD WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG!
One of my favorite posts after reading this. I've been saying this since launch it seems. I can't understand why people get so angry about other players doing things that they don't like, when you can easily party with friends or search online for a group that plays the same way you do. I prefer to be a speed runner, but I'll slow down if I see my fireteam killing mobs.

I'm def a runner for the most part just trying to reap rewards but honestly sometimes I like to kill enemies along the way for chances at blue and purple engram drops

          • If this game actually gave meaningful rewards to players who "took the scenic route" Id be more inclined to agree and join in the crawlfest. But the game does no such thing.
