Probably the reason the story is so bland as it is. Originally the Traveler and Guardians/Speaker are the bad guys but they had to try to half-ass rewrite it towards the end to make us look good so none of it makes sense. I've had the feeling all along we're like the space zombies just rezzed to do the Speaker's bidding. "Kill this, kill that, don't ask questions" kind of thing. Reminds me a bit of the plot of Oblivion, we are basically Tom Cruise not realizing the Tet is evil at first. Personally I think the warminds defeated the Traveler at a great cost to humanity and Rasputin is all that is left. This would explain why the hive are trying to get into the RAS2 bunker in Forgotten shore with a servant of Oryx in the bottom of the boat near the Vault entrance. I think his AI core is in there and they want to destroy it to remove the last obstacle to bringing back the Traveler, meanwhile Rasputin is trying to reach out to the rest of the system to see what remains of the other warminds to see if he can get their resources/revive them, which would explain why he's in the machines on Mars. Meanwhile the Speaker and ghosts rez all of us up and create their own little myth about the past and what really happened and they now have their own little army to fight the Traveler's enemies. The only thing that doesn't make sense is why we are fighting against the Hive, but perhaps that was just lost in translation when they re-did the story, or its a cover to hide the Hive's true purpose. I also believe the Awoken are humans that escaped Earth during the collapse and gained new powers/abilities and appearances while living for centuries on the borders of dark space. They know the truth about the Traveler and have remained in hiding. Of course sadly we'll never know if any of this is true.

  • Another explanation would be that the hive were the first race chosen by the traveler to be its heralds, but that they proved too weak against humanity's armies. So the Hive are attacking us not as enemies of the traveler but as more of a competition for daddy's attention, mad because we took their spot. Why else would they have already been seeding earth? Because they are left over of the initial war between them. Then you might ask, "okay so then explain the vex." The vex are a power of balance. They are essentially guardians of time and balance throughout the galaxy. Always keeping either side from completely winning. This also explains why the awoken got mad when you guardian says he wishes to destroy the black garden.

  • Really great comment, when I found that RAS-2 bunker it looked to me as though that servant of Oryx was defending Rasputin, maybe that ties in with the Warminds siding with what we call the Darkness, fighting against the true threat to what he was built to defend (since humanity no longer exists I believe he defends what is left of it). To me the RAS-2 computers seem to be forced into position of the walls of the bunker, not even comparable to the finesse of pre-collapse scientists and engineers, there are huge masses of wires running in all directions and boxes clearly from the moon. Looks to me like the hive put Rasputin there, maybe to observe the traveller from close by? There's also a symbol on the all boxes I took a note of to keep an eye out for when I replay the story missions, I think it might represent Rasputin or the people who built the Warminds.

  • Could be, but from what I've seen of inside the vault there is an actual huge AI computer core inside, I just hope we get some kind of explanation for all of this eventually and not just a handful of more grimoire cards, lol

  • Just noting that this would also explain the nearby Hive seeder with lvl 20 enemies.
