How did we lose the war?

No really! Explain it to me. What I know is this: The Traveler arrived on mars in the not so distant future. Giving us several hundred years of technological advancement. We could terraform planets. Think about it. As of right now they say doing something like that would take thousands of years. We did it in only a few in this game. So thats a pretty big thing. So one would assume our weapons and whatnot developed with that kind of wonder tech. And the fact that the city apparently cannot produce some kind of ammunition for its turrets tells me we did advance our weapons and that we have lost some of the know how to make them if not use them. How we lost: From what I know is that this thing that no one knows anything about called the Darkness arrived and in what sounds like one fell swoop took out all that we had built. How? Is it some strange enigmatic being? Or did it use the Fallen, Vex, Cabal, and Hive to do its dirty work. If its the first point...Then wtf? How does no one know what it is or even remember or have any knowledge of it? Something like that would probably of made the history books. Now if its the second point....Well this makes less sense. If the Darkness used the other races to bring Humanity to its knees....How? Seriously look at our enemies. The Fallen. They have houses that bicker among themselves. But first...Their weapons. They have slow charging pulse rifles that you can dodge by moving at a walk. A rifle that while it shoots tracking rounds, you can dodge these by strafing right or left, and a 6 legged mecha tank that is the next best thing to worthless. Look at the tank. Blowing off the armor of the legs causes it to shut down and show you its weakspot. Its main turret telegraphs when and where it is going to shoot, and the rest of its weapons are inaccurate as anything else. Plus it moves slow. Current tanks move faster, turn faster, and cannot be damaged by small arms fire. Unlike this tank of the Fallen. Im pretty sure an M1A1 could beat anything the fallen have by itself. The Cabal Roman style shields, Rocket launching shoulder pads, and a hover tank. These guys are a little better in my opinion than the Fallen are. They poise a little bit more of a threat. But lets look at them now. Big assed shields. These guys a slow and when they cover behind their shields they cannot aim worth anything. Plus they are stupidly vulnerable to any kind of flanking. So facing 3 or more people is a hopeless situation for a group of these guys. The captains and the centurions are the only part of this race that I can see being worth anything. They have shields can use rockets to float along and have either a chain gun a rocket launcher or...Rocket pads. But they like everything else couldn't shoot the broadside of a barn. Their big assed hover tank. Is...Too big to be worth anything. It could not fight its way through most cities let alone any kind of valley. Only useful for big open plains. Suffers same problem of being damaged by small arms and telegraphing where its going to shoot. The Vex. Teleporting robots. Almost all of the Vex suffer from the same thing. A glowing weakness on its body. The only one that does not are their big rocket totting shield wearing brothers. Who get mad and go into a rage instead of doing the right thing which would be lobbying rockets from afar. They almost all can teleport and some can become immune to damage, but what could is being immune to damage for 3 seconds in an open field. Nadda. Their big tank like things the Hydra have arms that fire a non stop volley of what I am assuming is plasma. They also have a rotating body shield that cannot be taken down and makes that portion of their body immune to all damage. Buuuuuut...They like everything else suck at aiming their twim turrets. And the body shield is next to worthless as it only cover part of them. Get enough of a height difference and you can shoot down past it with no fear of it stopping you. Horrible weakness. The Hive These guys..Just make no sense. They are clearly the most evil of all our enemies. But how did they ever gain space flight? Look at their society. To me...They all seem brainless except for the wizards. I just do not understand these beings. They must of been supplied by some 3rd party. The Darkness? Perhaps. Or maybe they are the Darkness embodied. But looking back..I feel like present day (As in 2014) Humans could put up a fight against the majority of these races. Their heavy vehicles are the next best thing to giant targets and their general aim and fighting style makes them seem as though they have no idea of what they are doing. So this takes me back to the start. How did we lose? The Humans who had several hundred years of tech advancement should have crushed any one or two or hell three of these races. The weapons we should have had should of torn a hole through anything they could have tossed against our walls. Or did these weapons not come about till after the fall? But if so...Why can we no longer make the ammo for some of our turrets. How did we become more advanced after losing the war when it comes to building new weapons. From the knowledge the npcs seem to have of the enemy, we had enough left to study them. So if so why can we not just build some type of weapon platform and go around and bring them to their knees? Or hell build a space ship and leave earth behind. Its clear none of them go hunting into the reef and kill any they find there. So just learn to fly a damn ship and get out of dodge. Someone enlighten me.

  • There has to be a half decent story in the game to explain all of that. Instead all we got was I could tell you and I haven't got time to explain why I haven't got time. My daughter could write a better story than that!

  • You have to remember we were not ready for war. I'm sure we fought back but there wasn't much we could do. For one we probably were not making any weapons because we didn't think we needed too. We were just worried with colonizing planets and advancing our tech. So when the darkness did arrive it's not hard to slaughter scientists and unarmed people. They just outright slaughtered everyone before we could organize as to what happened.

    • The same way the Germans lost WWII. Inferior numbers and surrounded on all sides. Each of the four races were influenced by the Darkness to go after the Traveler and stomp down whatever was in their way. We happened to be in their way. So now you have a 4-on-1 fight. Four massive armies organized against a single species. Yeah no way we were going to win that one. With the Darkness dispersed, the races previously allied turn on each other turning a four-on-one stomp fest into a five way fight. We survive now because we can play on their hatred for each other and prey on the weakened forces left when they move on each other.

        • De-militarization. We were at peace, with no shortage of resources. Research labs may have been DEVELOPING the weapons we now wield, but they weren't in the hands of the rank and file military yet. The fall started with the awakening of the Vex. Our research on them brought us to Mercury, where we did...something...that woke/freed them. The Vex turned Mercury into a machine in a matter of days. Then the Hive arrived on the Moon and Earth. We sacrificed the Moon to defend Earth. Meanwhile the Vex and Fallen had arrived at the edge of the system to contain both the Vex and Hive. Our Outer colonies instinctively attacked, convinced these were part of the alien forces attacking the inner system. The Human military needed time to deploy. And we were at war on several fronts. The Vex on Mercury and Venus, the Hive on Earth and the Moon, the Fallen and Cabal in the outer system. We were short handed, every ship capable of doing so fled...it was only the Traveler's timely sacrifice that saved Earth and Venus. However, the fighting had severed our communications. In the name of containment, the Cabal had smashed the fleeing earth ships, and set up a containment zone encompassing the inner planets. With no communication or supply shipments from Earth, the outer colonies starved to death. The survivors on Earth gathered beneath the Traveler, and with the help of the Ghosts built a city. A city that accelerated weapon research and development. A city that experimented and learned to harness the Traveler's power. And so the Guardians were born.

          • The first thing to realize is that the Darkness - whatever it is - is similar or even more powerful than the Traveler. You have a being/construct that has helped humans to be uplifted (terraforming, lifespans, technology, etc.) - how direct or powerful that influence is unknown at this point. The problem is you have an opponent that is just as capable of knocking humanity out; destroying all you have done with the same ease. What the game opens on is the aftermath not of just a war; but a battle of two titanic powers greater than humanity sum power. Before the current era, everything else that follows in the story is the fallout and restoration. Here's why humanity (and the Traveler) lose the war: The Darkness cheats. (Read the Grimoire entries about the Darkness - as told by Rasputin.) The Traveler is unwilling to sacrifice humanity to achieve victory; unwilling to let some die so that others may live. By tying itself to this obligation, the Light/Traveler is at a disadvantage with a foe that is its equal. The Darkness - and many of its servants (more on that in a minute) - have no qualms about doing whatever it takes (including self-destruction) to insure that the Traveler and humanity are destroyed. It is only by finally making a sacrifice (the Traveler itself) that we even survived the war by hurting the Darkness so badly that it couldn't continue its destruction. Rasputin (the AI) only survives by not protecting humanity. But by saving itself and using the same sort of "scorched earth" tactics that our enemies apply. As for the enemies we have seen so far , the impression I get is that the Cabal and Fallen are not so much a part of the Darkness' force as a symptom of the chaos and collapse. The Cabal seem more like a displaced conquering force that just kind of stumbled upon us - possibly chasing something interesting about the Vex; possibly running from something else is implied. If the Traveler was still powerful. you get the impression they would never have been able to even breach the Solar System. The Fallen, on the other hand, are scavengers/pirates/survivors. Like carrion birds, they follow the wake of destruction and dig in until the next meal. The only reason they haven't moved on is because the Darkness didn't leave - they are still waiting. The Vex and the Hive seem to be a different thing. Vex seem to be worshippers of the Darkness (or at least some part of the Darkness based on the Dark Heart). The Hive appear to be if not devotees, then clearly are supported/supporting the Darkness - maybe in the same way that the Traveler's Ghosts are supporting what's left of humanity. The implication I get is they are taking advantage of the weakened Traveler and are actively working on finding ways to deplete it so it can finally be destroyed and the Darkness can finish the job. Don't know if that s really any more accurate. Just the impression I got from the game and the grimoire parts.

Well I think most of our power came from the traveler, so when it "died" we lost our power base. Unable to continue to produce the weapons of the golden age and met with enemies such as the Fallen's House of Kings (the most noble and powerful of the houses according to the grimoire), or the Knight Crota and his light swallowing sword, we were simply unprepared for that kind of force to assail us. A sneak attack carried out by multiple hostile races across 4 or more battlefields, any army would be stretched incredibly thin, even one as powerful as the guardians. When what was left of our armies were finally able to regroup on earth, they put up one hell of a fight and were able to keep the fallen at bay. But even now there exists only the one city literally under the protection of the traveler. The traveler is our power, without it we're nothing compared to the power of the darkness, though we are still quite the masters of war and violence. And remember this game takes place centuries after the collapse, the enemy could have pulled back the majority of it's forces, after all you don't need your entire army to occupy a conquered territory, only a small fraction of it, while the rest continue to consume worlds through out the universe.

That there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there. Like a splinter in your mind -- driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to me. Do you know what I'm talking about?"

                • In my opinion, the classic "the villain doesn't care about losses" thing sums it up. Also, just because the guardians are winning now doesn't mean they always were, and doesn't mean they always existed. An army, with regular sized, regular powered, regular trained soldiers would not last against all the four factions. It was only after the sacrifice that the ghosts were released to create guardians. Even after, the guardians were not the full key. They lost thousands trying to take the moon, or even just defeat Crota. They lost hundreds at the battle of Twilight Gap. Guardians are not invincible. But after centuries of losses and defeat, we finally gained the upper hand. And the current story starts.

                • I imagine that we used the Travellers light in a lot of integrated ways. Whatever the darkness was, it could have struck at the traveller somehow, and caused all of these integral things to fail and shatter our defences.

                • No... We lost because all the crybabies wanted the government to "nerf" all of the weapons.. The shotgun ...it hurts my ears! The auto-rifle it hurts my feelings! Ect......ect...ect They did.. All that was left was a good slap on the wrist.. Thats why we lost.. We are doomed again.

                  • I could tell you about the great battle... But right now I don't have time to explain why I can't explain. But seriously, just use fanfic for the story. The game was designed to not be too deep so it wouldn't confuse us, the lowly player base, so we could just shooty-shooty until CoD comes out.

                  • My general idea of the lore is that the warmind Rasputin sacrificed a very large portion of the human race to get enough light to push back the darkness. According to this theory, light would kind of be like souls. Or something.

                    • The original story before they cut everything was that the traveler is infact evil. Heart of darkness the final level (as of now) actually takes place inside of the traveler (or was supposed to). The traveler granted us its blessing so we would become dependent on it and it could control us. I could tell you more but I won't....(Source: Destiny AMA). However the current story after Bungie cut everything is incomplete. They have a vision and ideas but so much was cut that no one really has any concrete answers.

The first movies had a great, coherent story, we all expected the new movies to be similar, instead we got one of most god awful trilogies of all time that disappointed any movie goer with half a brain. I guess what I'm saying is, the lead story developer for Destiny left a year ago, the Grimior cards were a band-aid and I imagine all we're going to get going forward is damage control. With how little content the DLCs appear to be bringing in, there's just no way to tell this story to any level of completion, it really would take 10 years at this rate....

We actually won but victories are random in this game so Bungie gave the win to The Darkness. Us: "Yay we won!" Bungie:"ummm...no. This is not the experience we intended for you to have"
You know, like in the game, when you get the best score and do the best on your team but get nothing while the guy in last place with 2 kills and 9001 deaths gets a legendary engram or Exotic. I've seen it happen waaay too often :'(
