One thing I simply can't stand about this game is the fact that almost all of the vendors are completely useless. Take the Gunsmith for example. Aside from buying the fusion rifles for the bounty or obtaining a weapon before you hit level 20, there's literally no use for him. How do you fix this problem?
Suggestion
You know all the thousands upon thousands of greens you keep getting and dismantling into lousy crafting materials? Well, why not make it so that you can trade a certain quantity of them into the gunsmith to raise your reputation with him? I know another reputation grind, but the perks would be well worth it.
As he advances in level he becomes able to reroll the perks and abilities of weapons and armor. You can then trade in the guns and unused pieces of armor you have to get a reroll on another piece you have. Once you reroll an ability or perk, 3 options will come up. You pick the one you want and discard the rest. If it's none of the options appeal to you, then you can simply repeat the process until your gear is exactly how you want it.
Wish that helmet had Intellect instead of Discipline? Maybe you get want it to have one big Intellect buff instead of two stats. All of this and more could be done with a system similar to what Diablo 3 uses to support their RNG system.
Gunsmith rank comes into play when it comes to rerolling perks and abilities on better items. The better the item, the higher rank you need to be able to reroll stats on it. This system would also fix stuff like having boots that give pulse rifle ammo when all you reallly want is more auto rifle ammo.
TLDR. RNG is fine the way it is. Just take a lesson from Diablo and give players the option to reroll stats.

I don't really like your idea, no offense. I just rather they turn him into a Stylist NPC that lets you change your appearance and such for glimmer. Or he can be a goods tradesman who sells spinmetal, relic iron, and such for glimmer.

Would really like Bungie to focus on the gunsmith, especially considering Glimmer is not really useful for buying much apart from ammo synthesis. So yeah, bump!

Yeah good idea the gunsmith is useless right now BUMP
-
I should be able to get good engrams and weapons at a low level. Why not? I will out level it after 3 missions anyways... Its so lame how useless these vendors are. Level 1 rank should let you unlock lower level blues!
-
Only good green uncommon gun I really like is my Psi Tempus III, only for the crucible though, but even for the crucible it's still kind of useless since it's a weak ass Pulse Rifle.
-
No offense but the gunsmith is useless and only good for buying ammo. Breaking down the armor and weapons are required to upgrade newer pieces. So why would I trade them to a guy who has nothing I would ever want as the vanguard vender and PVP venders offer weapons 100 times better. And since I'm already built rep with them the gunsmith is of less use.

Been thinking the same thing. Let me trade glimmer, weapons parts, and hadronic essence for something. Anything. Reputation, resources, crafting, anything really. Great thread. Thanks for starting it.

This. This is a great idea seeing as I have near 400 weapon parts
-
Or just make it so that there's a crafting system and you can use the parts to make things like modifications to your sparrow (a gun on a sparrow?) or you own weaponry/armor. You can still do levels in the crafting but it could be specific to the class. Maybe a warlock can make things that a Titan can't. Maybe Hunters can make augmentations to their own armor while Titans can make modifications to their vehicles...I dunno, just thinking. I agree though, there should be a use for the 1k plasteel plating that I have.

This is a great idea

Edited by RentonRivasJR: 10/21/2014 4:49:39 PMHonest feedback: This game's entire economy needs to change, not just the gunsmith. I dont know about you guys but I feel bad for the people that spent God knows how many hours creating weapons and gears for it to be rendered completely useless. Weapons: If it isn't Purple or Gold, I dismantle, I dont even look at it. Gear: If it isn't Raid gear or Gold, I dismantle, I dont even look at it. Not even normal Legendaries do it for me. So what is Bungie going to do about this? This game has no economy and bungie needs to create one, so many assets are being rendered useless/obsolete and this game is only a month old. Bungie is very adamant that people don't use the same single weapon but right now, everyone is going to be using the same single raid gear with an exotic to fill in here and there. I hope they reconsider, for the good of the game and the possibility that it is played longer than 3months.

So much yes but bungie is getting stupid and won't listen lol
-
Not a bad idea but it was more necessary for D3 because there was more completely useless stats whereas in destiny while some stats or bonuses arent as desired, they are all still beneficial.
