Too Many Restrictions

Honestly, I love the game. The story was bittersweet and dominating the crucible is fun and worth hours of constant play with friends. Despite being quite a polished game (gameplay wise) I can't help but feel so restricted in any progress. I played for many hours through 2 days and suddenly I can't progress any more until the week is over... Glimmer maxes at 25,000, you can only get 100 crucible/vanguard points every week and only hold a maximum of 200 at any time, and daily/weekly missions aren't as rewarding as you would expect them to be. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Now, I understand that this system would prevent players from afk farming strikes/crucible (which many players still do and still get undeserved great gear) or just anyone from playing so much and out farming/dominating players that play fewer hours per week, but is it really necessary? If I want to play so many hours a week, I want to reap the rewards of my efforts. If I'm going to play a lot, I want it to be reflected not only in my achievement/grimoire score but also in my collected mass of glimmer/marks/gear. If you can afford and own all the guns in the vanguard store after farming for 24 hours straight, more power to you. Destiny shares so many features and qualities taken from MMORPG systems that work, so why not utilize them? Now my other aspect of feeling far too restricted is the maps themselves. Granted there are 4 worlds, each with a sandbox style feel to them as you can go anywhere on the map as you please. But are they really even sandbox maps? The maps are big, yeah. But why the need for so many unnecessary invisible walls and kill zones? There's a ledge leading to a building that looks easily accessible, why am I not allowed there? Which dynamics in the game are potentially ruined just because I would like to sit on the top of a skyscraper building? On the moon, there is a small section of the map that looks safe to explore but after walking into it, I ended up getting stuck with the 4 second death warning. Just add a limitation where if you're killing any enemy from too far away, you get neither loot nor exp for the kills. The whole sense of discovery and that MMO style feel you get from playing is completely ruined due to the lack of exploration. Yeah, there is plenty to explore, but you suddenly realize how small the maps actually are when you are forced to farm upgrade material or do the repetitious yet limited patrol missions. The first 5-10 hours of the game was an fps experience that was a mix of many of the great features from various genre of popular gaming. But the lackluster finish and end-game should have been the focus of a game like Destiny and Bungie should have taken notes from the huge MMO companies in Korea and Japan in this regard. This lack of variation, repetitive strikes and bounties, and so few crucible maps, the game starts to turn bland really fast and I'm praying that Bungie will release some extra content that will make my 60 dollars actually feel like a good investment. On a different page of issues, crucible balancing and classes that I have issues with. I play as a hunter. I read all the gripes that people have against hunters but people don't understand how EASY it is to counter both blade dancers and the golden gun since neither grant you any invincibility (albeit blade dancers gain some bonus defense and one perk allows them to regen health for every super kill). Any super charge that grants invincibility or a giant boost in defense is unbalanced and a bit unfair in my books. Well, I hate all super charges equally because they are intended to be OP and only utilized whenever they're available, but man... some moves you can't ever counter unless you absolutely expecting it. You ever go up against a full fireteam of 6 warlocks in control? What a nightmare.

  • 1. The level system after level 20 is GEAR based, not EXP based. Which means that they only way you will progress any farther is to equip gear higher "light stats" (25+ if your' lvl 27). So you should be looking to get all Legendary armor plus one exotic piece. Simple enough to BUY if you are doing all the activities you say you are. That should get you to about level 28. 2. The only way to progress past level 28 is to do the raid. First to get the Ascendant shards necessary to fully upgrade your legendeary gear....then to acquire "raid gear" which has light levels that go up to 30...and will let you reach the level cap of 30 (three pieces of raid gear armor, plus one exotic....fully upgraded). 3. Your guardian is NOT an adventurer. He is a soldier in an army that is fighting a war. So allowing you to simply WANDER, would quickly find you running out o fthings to shoot at ( the main point of the game), get you killed, and loose the immersion of being in an armed conflict. The best way of thinking of those areas is that they are "skyboxes". Or like the Matte paintings used in movie making to give the sense of being in a bigger space. Since the developers can't give you a whole PLANET to move around in. 4. The typical MMO can give you more content because: a.) they are charging you a monthly subscription fee (in addition to charging your for the game and expansions), so they have the revenue to pay for people to make these things. Bungie isn't charging you on an ongoing monthly basis. b.) the game play mechanics of most MMOs are pretty crude. In fact some are just graphic depictions of menu key presses. Where as the software need to support an on-line FPS is massive in scope, and difficult to debug. Because milliseconds seperate a good game....from a disaster (battlefield 4) 5. Going up against ANY team of guardians who TRULY play as a team is a nightmare in the Crucible. The nature of the game. Wish I had $5 for every time I've stumbled into firefights where I died a quick and painful death because the other side had a numerical advangtage...or a firepower advantage that I failed to recognize.
