Is it worth leveling up the legendary before dismantling? Does it give more shards?

I'm not sure exactly, I've never tried it. I didn't want to waste the materials and risk getting the same amount of shards.

Only if you put shards in - you get about 50% back, so not worth it.

Sorry I wasn't clear on that. I mean upgrade up to the point that you would need to start using shards. I think there's usually 2 defense upgrades that only require glimmer and a type of material (helium, relic iron, etc..)
