[Suggestion] Add a Transmogrification style system to Destiny.
What is Transmogrification? Transmogrification (Transmog) is a system used in Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls and World of Warcraft that allows characters in-game to change the appearance (but not the function) of their weapons and armor. It's a purely aesthetic device, akin to armor shaders but changing the graphic, not just the color. The transmog system is common in other RPGs, and the way it works in Diablo 3 is more or less directly taken from World of Warcraft.
I'm really enjoying Destiny thus far, but I have beaten almost all of the content available. Normally at this point in the game, now that my character is relatively strong, I would be working on improving how he looks. I've noticed now that as players begin to approach level 30, everyone is beginning to look the same. This is mainly because raid gear is required to hit level 30, so players have no option but to equip it. For me character customization is an important part of defining who your character is in Destiny and from the development ViDocs it seems Bungie intended for exotics to somewhat fill that role. At present I don't feel there are enough exotic pieces to really differentiate the players and some exotic items are proving far more popular than others. My suggestion would be to allow players to choose to customise the look of any items other than exotics. I feel a lot of the lower level armor models are wasted at present. Some examples of how I would use it: - I have a awesome looking Spirit of the Vulture bond from The Speaker but I feel compelled to wear the plain Dead Orbit bond as I have already hit rank 3 with the Vanguard. This would allow me to get the desired functionality from the Dead Orbit bond (+rep) but also look cool in the process. - I'm not a fan of the closed trench-coat style items as I feel they clip awkwardly in the sitting animation. I have a piece of armor in my vault that I refuse to wear because it looks like the this. I'm using a slightly less optimal piece of gear at the moment because it looks better. This system would eliminate that issue, I can look cool and be powerful. - There are some cool mid-game helms that have been modelled like the horned Tengu Operant that are wasted at present. This would give players reasons to go back and explore older content to try and get these items. Edit: Added tags

  • We need Bungie to implement this. Every other guardian looks the same. When can we dust off our old y1 armor?!

  • I completely agree with this. Admittedly I haven't seen much of the new armor to come in TTK, but it would be great if we could apply the appearance of any armor to higher tier armor. Destiny needs to give players as many options as possible to make their characters unique and individual. I really like the appearance of some of the Year 1 armor, especially some of the raid gear. It would be great if we could apply the appearance of these lower level items to newer, higher level items. I have seen people arguing that this would go against Bungie's idea that the gear you are wearing should reflect the challenges you've faced but I disagree. Wouldn't apply the appearance of my VoG helmet to a higher level one be showing that I completed VoG on hard? The new 'infusion' mechanism being introduced with TTK is a great idea, allowing you to level-up lower level items, but what if you are happy with the perks you have on the higher level gear you have, you just don't like the look of it? I really hope this is something that will be added in the future.

  • Totally against transmog. Items skins should identify the item.

    • All they need is a style tab in the inventory that stores all the armor styles that you collect. Then you can mix and match skins for your character.

    • Don't need trans, need a costume tab like most MMO's. If you don't know, one equips items that they want to use in one tab while equipping items that shows appearance in another.

Who the -blam!- rezzed this from the dead?? We got item ascension - THAT is our transmog, with full functionality instead of just painting over it. Much better execution on Bungie's part. Stop trying to get Barbie dress up added to this game. Keep your drag queen make-up in your personal life.

    • I second this and this is very high upon my wishlist. The Planet Destiny's latest POD cast touches on this subject and their suggestion is mindblowingly awesome. Not a exact quote but "what if they added some special piece of gear that can drop purely for cosmetic purpose" Similar like a shader can be applied you could use these "transmog specific" pieces to make your Guardian your own.

    • I have reverted to wearing my full Holdfast vanguard set on my Titan because I absolutely love the way it looks and it's how I want my Titan to be seen by other guardians. I have a lvl32 raid chest, boots and class item but I refuse to wear them while I'm doing bounties/patrols/crucible because it is simply unattractive to me. I greatly dislike having to switch my armor when I'm preparing for a raid or a nightfall because the stats on the armor that is appealing to me are not as good as my ugly raid pieces. Just my example of how adding a transmogrification system would allow me to become legend and look sexy while I'm at it.

    • Consider it bumped. This needs to happen, Bungie would be dumb NOT to include this! Almost EVERY MMO-alike game nowadays has this kind of system built into it.

    • I'd like to add a thought to this as well. While reading the weekly update, Bungie mentioned that they want to buff the Vex Mythoclast to make the weapon usable for next raid tier. That is a great idea to help expand the life of a beautiful and unique weapon model (and a hard won wall trophy). But what about other exotics? Now, I’m not recommending that you make every exotic super powerful so that it is always usable, that would lower the drive to find new and cool weapons as the game progresses, and honestly would be an unfair advantage to players who join the game late. But some of these weapons that we have worked hard for or been luckily gifted with are just to cool, and beautiful to store or shard every time a new expansion is released. I don’t want you to make them forever usable through super stats, but a mechanic like transmogrification (allowing guardians to use their skins for newer looted weapons of the same type) or perhaps implementing an upgrade system allowing you to level them (through some serious effort) to bring them up to spec for next raid tier, would go a long way to making them feel like truly epic rewards. Exotic weapons and gear in Destiny are Iconic and shouldn’t be made useless and unequipped every few months. Maybe I’m in the majority but I think that weapons like Gjallarhorn and Thorn are so iconic with destiny that players should be encouraged to keep them around, and give them some way to continue kicking butt in raids and story missions with them for months or years to come. Long story short Bungie, please consider implementing some mechanic (transmogrification, upgrade, or other) to allow us guardians to continue to use our cherished weapons, even as the level cap increases and newer better weapons and loot becomes available.

    • I thought this would hve been put in, but I guess Bungie wanted everyone with raid gear to look exactly the same?
